World of Warships - Quick Cut: Tier VIII Premium American Cruiser USS San Diego

Not too long ago, a new viewer on Twitch popped in and requested help with Tier VIII Premium American cruiser San Diego. It seems they had one won in a container or similar and wanted to understand the ship. Here's my breakdown of San Diego - including how I build mine out - with a sample game. The game itself doesn't break any records, but it's kinda fun. =)

Gosh this is more or less exactly what I was looking for, thanks for pointing out the Quick Cut for me! I never really thought of leaning into the Air Defense on the San Diego :P

Most people don't. They buy into the misconception that AA is worthless and never actually try it for themselves. Pro tip: AA isn't worthless. It is sometimes wasted; you build into skills and modules that do not grant you any return in a game without a CV. The trade-off is that in a game with a CV, you can have a big impact.

I wish Sandy have even stronger AA to the point that only Super Ships with Jets can avoid the AA. Entirely. Basically Sandy breathe on planes, Aircraft just dies.

Love the San Diego, it is one of the few ships I paid real money for. And yes, she's one of the few ships that reliably shreds planes of same tier CV's.

I didn't know that a Kita could not out fight a freezeland....

It wasn't a Kitakaze, it was a Katsonis. The Katsonis relies on his smoke/radar trick to be a large threat to opposing destroyers. The problem is that THIS Katsonis went too deep into the cap and ended up within the hydro range of the opposing Friesland when his radar expires. That means he's dead.

Wrt Nelson, to be fair, discounting overmatch, Nelson AP (and most RN AP shells in general) is lackluster for the caliber. California's 356mm AP has 10% more penetration at 12km than Nelson's 406mm AP, for example.

It may be, but if you are shooting at cruisers, I have no idea why you wouldn't use it.

@@SeaRaptor given the enhanced pen of RN HE, I wouldn't be surprised if the player was trying to be cheeky and get HE citadels on cruisers.

San Diego actually has a significantly worse dispersion ellipse than that of Atlanta so ASM1 is definitely the right choice.

You finally see why AA does nothing...once he knew you had good AA...he just ignored you. Against bad CV captains, yes...build for it. I build for it on ships that I want to take flanking...because it forces the CV to PAY to strike me off the board. But you are always going to be at a disadvantage against a CV captain that knows how to play. His planes will always hold the initiative advantage.
