Im a cruiser player from the very beginning, thats all I played for 2 years and I will give what I think is the biggest problem for most of them take it or leave it. It is the first 5 minutes of matches, the dds roll out with us between them and the bbs. If the dd smokes when spotted(usually the same time a cruiser gets spotted further back but worse conceilment) you start getting focused on by every enemy. At that point the fruendly bbs have already started moving latterally so they are keeping their distance staying concealed and refusing to fire back at any ships because they want to remain undetected or other bbs shooting at your cruiser are still too far away for friendly bbs to hit. This scenario occurs constantly with the only option is not advancing foward to support your lead dd which is also not good for the team. I learned the hard way to play cruisers by playing the Japanese line(no smoke, no radar, no speed boost)for 2 years, nothing else. As soon as I played BBs it bacame easy mode for me, a whole other game that made me realize the best cruiser players are the best players in the game because you learned trial by fire.

Also to point out the other big issue that is even shown in this videos first clip right away - there’s too many battleships to deal with. 6 per team is a normal match up. Everyone wants to play a battleship now. Secondary problem is they shoot further than you so it’s not like you can easily fight back without over extending and getting yourself in a bad position. So you have a bulk of the enemy team that can hit you but you can’t hit them. Zao was my first cruiser too 👍🏼

I recently finished the Des Moines and I am disappointed I didn't grind it out sooner. I mostly play battleships these days, but now I get to sit behind an island and burn those suckers down! I also like wrecking those little DD bastards that get into my personal space... Seriously though, I enjoy playing cruisers again because of Des Moines.

20:50 You neglected to mention the turret rotation speed, which might if you're lucky be able to keep up with the local continental drift. At least in T4-5 it's much quicker to turn the ship than turn the turrets.

Can confirm, as a UK light cruiser player that played mainly on Co-Op missions....I forgot I was a light cruiser when I went into a battle with other players. Went up with a destroyer....got deleted by a BB and an 2 cruisers firing on me lol Almost at tier 9 though...so very close.

American, if you want to learn the basics of CA playstyle. Most of the ships are pretty solid, but their are some real sandouts in ability (Balti, Clev, Worc., & DM), but for sheer power Rusky line, which are still solid trainers, too.

My first line ever was the des moines line,still is my only tier 10 i got..the hard thing to learn if you switch on other cruisers are the different pen angles..while you still shoot AP in an american cruiser you had to switch to HE 1 or 2 salvo before in an other cruiser

Um SeaLord a little Addendum. US Cruisers don't get their Heavy Shells until tier 8, just like the US battleships. The MAIN feature of the entire line however is their Superior Pen Angles, I forget the exact degree (I want to say you can get pens at like a 70-75 degree angle) But US Cruiser shells BITE at angles that every other Cruiser line would otherwise BOUNCE at. Additional notes for US Heavy Cruisers, The Pensacola and New Orleans both are sporting 25mm plating these days, thus they can face tank 14inch shells (very common at tier 6 and 7).

Good review. With current meta, RNG, and the RPS lottery, I find most of the cruisers you mentioned difficult to play. Some of the difficulty is my average skill level. The MM seems to take cruiser slots for BBs, CVs, and subs. Tier VIII most games is one of sudden death. I would like to see your take on premium that are available using the various currencies, and the few that were dockyard ships.

I feel it makes the most sense to call the French and Dutch Battle Cruisers, Battle Cruisers. It seems a Battle Cruiser becomes a "Cruiser" if it has 330mm guns or smaller, but larger than 254mm at top tier. Meanwhile Battle Cruisers become "Battleships" if they have guns larger than 400mm at top tier. Both have effectively the same armour, and both fill the same role on a team. So it's fair to call both "Battle Cruisers". Basically large enough guns to crush other Cruisers, and fast enough to run away from anything their own size. Also I rather like the Dutch Cruisers, full AA build on Gouden Leeuw is funny and the air strikes are rather effective even without legendary mod. I've also never had the biggest issue with her guns ether, even though I've heard a lot of people complain about them.

Might I add that the US heavy line can and will citadel pretty much anything if close enough, I mean last stand brawling range, similar to DD surprising you from behind island, if you meet a BB at that range, at full broadside about under 5km, you can do it and thanks to the nice dispersion, you can hit multiple citadels at once quite well.

one thing i like with the bomb airstrike is to flush ship in smoke. and yes the French line is just identity crisis all around XD, at a point i thought that the battle cruiser had longer reload than the BB line BB line : lot of gun but know idea where to put them also almost cruiser reload Henry line : i'm squishy so i gonna SHINE even more so people see me so i can shout more ( lighthouse) marseille well you said it XD the CV Béarn : i'm here to kill plane mostly DD line ( kleber for now) : zippy boat that act like close quartr cruiser to citadel other cruiser or even BB in some case (futur?) prenium sub surcouf : i m a underwater heavy DD XD

I have two tier viii U.S. cruisers, and about 90% of the time I despise them. I spend 75% of my time in them facing tier ix and tier x, can't get close enough to shoot anything, barely see anything, and barely scratch anything. The most miserable things I play other than that POS Cachalot I sold. The enemy literally has 6K-10K more range, and sees you at nearly twice the distance. The Baltimore sucks, the rate of fire is bad, accuracy is bad, all it has is an extra 6,000 hit points to give the enemy credits. At least the Cleveland has a decent rate of fire. And absolutely nothing else.

It would be rather tricky to do now as they already have at leat 2 versions of the Graf Spee as premiums. I suppose they could still add Scheer and Lützow and mix them up to cover a couple of tiers but then they would be literally making up designs to build a tree. I don't think any further design work was done on the concept as they were no longer bound by the displacement limits that inspired the design in the first place. EDIT: I suppose I should do some more research before posting. It seems there were actually 2 succeeding classes of paper designs (the "D" and "P" classes). Not much is known about them but they did exist.

The Spanish cruisers, it seems to me, are unpopular simply because they are squishy at low to mid tiers. I've gotten to Asturias and she's no better than a Dutch cruiser, and don't get me started on Baleares and Canarias.

Well with cruisers it heavily depends on what role u want to play....want to stop pushes? Jinan line is best and yodo line is ok...want long range HE spamming?Nevsky,Henri and Hinden l lines r very good ..want island hopping? Worcester line is good and radar minotaur can also do it...want mid range and also island hopping?Des Moines line..that's more or less wht the roles of these lines r with some differences in the same roles

Other than that if u want to tank in cruisers by just staying broadside then Petro line is busted and if u want to outflank and delete ships then Marseille line and the Spanish castilla line r great...If u want mid range kiting HE role then Goliath line works well.other than that if u just don't want to die then San Martin line and then if u want to just delete dds and cruisers then Venezia line is nice ...in the end I will say that cruisers require skill and even in the same role they play different from eachother

If u like to stay at range then go with Hinden line or Henri line with heavy cruisers and with Nevsky line with light cruisers and if u want island gameplay then Des Moines and Worcester lines r ideal.these lines r tried and true and very good at what they do at their roles

Comparing the dutch cruisers with the rest, especially the russian, it's clear wargaming hates the dutch. Can only be because of one reason: they are the best.
