The people that use the metric system have not landed a man on the moon. I still have hope that we may convert them away from the metric system. I remember back in the early 70s there started to be a big push to teach the metric system in the U.S.A. We did a good job of preventing that invasion. Actually the U.S.A. version of length measurement is binaray, 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8... which is what computers use while the metric system is a 10 based system designed for people that count on their fingers.

Get you a mini 14 and pay attention to the temperature and wind at around 350 yards out to 450 yards, the 5.56 will teach you a lot about how the bullet is affected as it slows down. You will soon find the heavier grain bullets go thru the transition more accurately.

I mean, maybe in popular culture nobody talks about that part, but in actual long range shooting that's one of the most commonly talked about things there is. Always gotta know where your bullet is gonna go to subsonic, because that's where your cone of fire is gonna open up by a large amount.

@@johnzuggster6718 even lighter 5.56 doesn't go subsonic until over 600 yds (650-700 being common). You're just talking about normal ballistics at 350-450, not the subsonic transition.

Yes the Swiss just like the Germans have some of they finest engineering and quality manufacturing facilities in the world. I have ran precision machines that were manufactured in both countries for the last 18 years and they are no doubt unrivaled when compared to similar equipment.

I have an EXCELLENT grasp of how "far" it is and how large the target is AND the fact that at 2240 yards the sights are going to completely "cover" that target and painting something "red" at that range rather than a "high contrast" color like WHITE makes it that much HARDER to see PERIOD. As an "unnatural" primary color rarely seen in "nature", the color red signifies "danger" and "stop" and is used as an "up close" warning sign for a reason. We're not "used" to seeing it, our eyes and vision easily become "blind" to it at long distances because of its location on the "spectrum" and when the color red "contrasts" the MOST with, which is GREEN (across from it on the "color wheel" and therefore the highest "contrasting" color to red) also isn't present, red tends to "disappear" altogether. Neither color is particularly "important" besides in traffic signal "stop lights" and people who are "red-green color blind" see red and green as "gray" and only need to see a "flashing gray light" to know its actually "red". Yellow is still yellow and white is still white and as a "non-color" only the fact that it IS a non-color keeps white from being the "highest contrast" color for EVER primary color. And since you yourself mention "vision restrictions using iron sights" you're admitting that it was a matter of "chance" and "probability" rather than "skill" since nobody can AIM AT what they CAN'T SEE and they're literally shooting "blind" and without "spotters" with spotting scopes telling them what "corrections" to make it would probably be even MORE "blind luck" getting a hit after "only" 60 rounds. I SERIOUSLY doubt YOU came here expecting to find that his "achievement" was a 1 for 60 (that we know of) "average" (that's "batting" .016 by the way - I challenge you to find a child who has never played "baseball" in his/her life that needs 60 swings to get their first "hit") when you clicked on the video and more than likely you're as "butthurt" or even MORE butthurt than anyone else that someone as "intelligent" and "knowledgeable" as you clearly think yourself to be on the subject of "shooting" sat through and watched a WHOLE 18:20 minute video wasting 18:20 minutes of your precious life you'll "never get back" only to see what amounted to "shoot til you hit it" so-called "marksmanship" on display and because you think you're "smarter" than anyone else here and got "screwed" out of 18:20 of your precious life and are too chicken-shit to bitch at the "disabled" guy, you decided to "scold" people who said exactly what you thought too. Yah, it's difficult to shoot a sub 3" group at 100 yards open sight with a stock K-31! I placed third in a C&R match years ago shooting my K-31 with issued ammo, and I considered myself fortunate to do as well as I did, after several weeks of practice. I cannot imagine shooting open sights further than 200 yards and regularly shoot a variety of C&R rifles at 100 yards-200 yards gives me a headache! John in Texas

Do you have any idea what a rig would cost to hit that buffalo at 2250 yards over 1.25 miles in 5 shots ... you probably have to spend $6,000 to $8,000 and even then I don't think that shooter would BET you he would hit it in 1 out of 5 shots! And thats with sniper rifle, like barrett 50 cal or similar, high power scope, windage meter, windage flags, spotting scope, matched ammunition. You are talking here about a $100 rifle and Iron sights (no scope at all) and good quality ammunition!!

Maxx Schiebel it is possible with a 91.30, tricky, but possible. The dispersal of barrel heat becomes the biggest issue. I've made my 91.30s very accurate, but you will only get good accuracy for the first 5 shots before having to allow the barrel to cool. The 8mm Mauser is also a very accurate rifle, but the .323 projectile has a very fast drop-off. I've never been able to get the 323 projectiles accurate beyond 1,300 yards, but I'm sure someone can get it out there.

I've read that the Germans engineered the Mauser to be militarilty effective to 600 meters, and the Swiss, on their mettle therefore, engineered the k31 to be effective to 900 meters. Wonderfully OCD for a mass-produced infantry rifle. I love mine, but I'm so unworthy of it. I've put the Swiss Products (Idaho) scope mount and bipod mount on it.

mag30th First, congrats to this achievement! I also own a K31 and love it but it is not my favoured instrument for open sight shooting, the iron sights are not optimal! This only adds to your marksmanship because I know that shooting it open is veeeeery demanding. Regarding the cloud related phenomenon you have observerd, I think air pressure differences is a secondary effect. I would opt for temperature influences being the primary. As soon as clouds cover soil, especially dark clouds, you can measure almost immediately significant temperature drops. And of course this will alter also air pressure. Shooting behind 2km the smallest effects have significant influence on outcome. And changing temperature on about half the trail at 2 to 3 degrees is a major variable...

+mag30th Yes, congratulations! I am not a long range shooter but I noticed a similar occurrence with shots stringing vertically during 200 yd hunter benchrest matches. I attributed the change in impact to mirage that is absent when the cloud is covering. Without cloud cover, the ground is warmer and the heat waves or mirage are present and are rising. When a cloud passes, that portion of the ground cools and doesn't generate as much heat so the mirage is less severe. Of course at 200yd a passing cloud usually covered the entire distance to the target. But it would make as much as 1/2 inch difference in impact from bright sunlight to overcast. This was in central Texas in the summer so probably mid to high 90's and high humidity.

I know this is a fairly late reply, but I believe the book Understanding The Sky by Dennis Pagen might be of some interest to you. I read it for a better understanding of weather as a parachutist, but I think that its detailed explanations of weather are extremely useful to anyone who needs more than a basic weather report for the activities they do. they actually think they could hit that target in 100 shots when in reality they would probably miss a 200 yard shot many times without a scope, nevermind a 2000 yard shot. And if they wear prescription glasses, they would be unable to see the target.

In the swiss military, 300yds prone is the standard when training.

@@davetupps THE BOLT WAS OUT. There was no bolt in the gun. No possible way to fire a round. It was the same as walking past a magazine loaded with ammo with the tips of the cartridges pointing at you. Some people really get hysterical about firearms safety.

Those older military rifles would have sights marked out that far for use in volley fire. That is, a single rifle isn't expected to hit a single target, but a squad can set to that range and fire a volley and the concentrated fire will be in the right neighborhood to possibly get some hits.

mag30th still recovering. Its been 5 months 3 of which i was in a halo traction device. I follow up again with the neurosurgeon in 2 months. Likely wont be able to return to modified work towards the end of the year and wont be able to weld pipe for at least another year unless i have a miraculous recovery. Thank you for your concern. Overall doing well, i can walk and feed myself and wipe my own ass so that being said life is good.

It is interesting how something like this can change your view on life so suddenly. Speaking for myself, the little things I took for granted prior to the injuries, like simple finger manipulation. No doubt some folk may have laughed when you mentioned the ability to wipe your own ass, but the reality is, many people after these injuries cant. After mine was fused I had gone 6 years and things gradually seemed to improve, or it may have been that I was just getting used to it. And one day at work we were headed out to a luncheon, and the group of us were about to step into the building elevator. I was the first to step in and without realizing it, the elevator was roughly 8 inches below level with the floor. When I stepped in my knee locked and I impacted very very hard. I recall being in the corner with my coworkers helping me, and I had felt like an electrical shock in both arms from the elbows down. I was in great denial for a few weeks, even though I could hardly hold a pencil or the steering wheel to my car. I learned that I had pulverized the region that had been fused from the impact and went in for surgery immediately after the MRI. I could go on and on about taking things for granted, I try not to anymore, but I have an entire new level of empathy for those with any type serious injury. I don't, or wont, ever, wish a serious injury like this upon anyone. I am very thankful though that I've recovered as much as I have, and that I've learned what I have learned thought the experience. Although I'm probably preaching to the choir.

Tom Russell The only bit I don't agree with is that it doesn't have recoil. For some reason (probably stock geometry), the K31 kicks the shit out of me. It's just about the least pleasant rifle to shoot that I own (including 300WM, 375H&H and 338LM).

Dennis H-CH It does recoil Dennis, but recoil is, to a degree, a matter of personal perception based not only the physical attributes of the gun/cartridge but the personal as well. I've trained so many people on the Scout Rifle and other light rifles over the years that a rifle in this caliber class feels very comfortable to me.

+Lynn Kramer Nope, it was carried by prison inmates actually. When the range was built years ago some of the steel like this were carried by hand. It took several of them to move the buffalo. It's a 900 yard hike uphill on soft dirt to get there. That made this attempt all the more challenging. We had to hike up and back from the closest road to check cameras, etc.
