I was over at Stormont Parliament Buildings on Saturday past to hopefully film 12 locally owned DMC DeLoreaans that were due to pay a quick visit, on their way to Portrush. I hadn't expected to get the added bonus of stumbling across the largest ever world gathering of Lambeg Drums! The big drums were there to celebrate the centenary of the founding of Northern Ireland! One of the drummers told me there were at least 150 drums were registered for the event. It was titled, 'Drums for Ulster'.
The gathering was organised by the Ulster-Scots Agency in partnership with Northern Ireland’s five Lambeg Drumming Associations and drummers of all ages and levels of ability from all parts of the country. The celebration also saw the dedication of a suite of eight new Centenary Drums commissioned by the Ulster-Scots Agency.
“Each drum depicts a significant person and building associated with the foundation of Northern Ireland with an emphasis on those from the Ulster-Scots community.” said Ian Crozier chief executive of the Ulster-Scots Agency. He added that "The Lambeg drum is the only musical instrument that is unique to Northern Ireland so we thought it was fitting that in this centenary year that should feature prominently.'
The Lambeg Drum
The Lambeg drum is a large drum, beaten with curved malacca canes. It is used primarily in Northern Ireland by Unionists and the Orange Order traditionally in street parades held in the summer, particularly on and around 12 July ("The Twelfth"). The weight of the drum means that it had been replaced with smaller replicas for most parades, but the full-sized instrument has started to reappear in recent years - usually on floats. Interestingly it is also used by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, having historical significance for parts of the nationalist community! I certainly wasn't aware of this!
Characteristics
The Lambeg drum is, together with the bagpipe, one of the loudest acoustic instruments in the world, frequently reaching over 120 dB. It measures approximately 3 feet 1⁄4 inch (92.1 cm) in diameter and 2 feet (61 cm) deep, and weighs 35-40 pounds (16-18 kg). Usually it is carried by the drummer while marching, using a neck harness.
The name comes from the village of Lambeg, County Antrim, which is situated ten miles southwest of Belfast and two miles from Lisburn. Tradition has it, that it was in the Lambeg area that the instrument was first played with canes. The drum is sometimes also called "tibbies", "slashers", or "killymans".
Origin
The origin of the Lambeg is unclear. It is commonly believed to have come to Ulster with English settlers in the early-mid-17th century. Other accounts state it came to Ireland with the Duke of Schomberg's men of the army of William of Orange during the Williamite war. Having its roots in the 17th century European military instruments it was originally smaller. Traditionally it was accompanied by the shrill fife, a small transverse flute similar to the piccolo.
Construction
The Lambeg drum's shell is generally made of oak. Lambeg drum heads are goat skins, they are very thin and strong, and of even thickness and consistency all over as far as possible. A Lambeg skin will also receive "special" treatment that is a secret to each maker. Because of their qualities they are also sometimes used for smaller drums such as bodhráns.
The Lambegs are different from other large drums in the quality of their tone. The thin heads are pulled tighter and tighter until the tone is bright and hard. There are no mechanical screws on the drums. The heads are held on with a wooden rim and, traditionally, linen ropes.
PS
My wee channel is not here to offer a debating forum as to what people might think of Northern Ireland or the formtion of Northern Ireland. So if folk want to make any kind of one-sided comment aimed at provoking an argument with those who think differently, then they have arrived at the wrong channel. I will delete their comment. I hope it will not come to that.
I have friends from Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Islamic or no religious backgrounds/traditions. I am happy to be treated as their friend too. Even though I have next to no musical ability I love all sorts of music and can appreciate the amazing talent/ability/skill to play any many musical instruments well. The Lambeg drum is an amazing instrument.

Yes indeed GB! This 'musical', cultural event will probably never be repeated with the same numbers. Strangely there was next to zero prior publicity about it and almost zero news coverage.

I was in Stormont to video the Delorean cars that were meeting up Ruth. Then I heard the Lambegs! I couldn't quite believe my ears and my eyes. The numbers of drummers assembled. This event was not well promoted if at all. I can't understand why. It was an amazing spectacle the like of which will probably not be seen again in my lifetime if ever. I was so glad to stumble across it almost by accident. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

The trick to mastering that hill is to use the side gates further up, much flatter and shorter..lol. Looks like they would have been closed here though. As an example of "being in the know", this is the first I'm hearing about this gathering.. Another great vid as always Tom (actually had you in mind when I was taping a charity bike run in Comber at weekend.. lol.)..

I used that trick Dave but was still out of breath because I was walking fast and trying to talk at the same time! Aaaaaah! Also I now realize I need to drop about a stone! lol The side gate was open. Iused it! I'd love to go on one of these runs, ( for older slower guys ) and film it! I'm not on Facebk or Twitter etc so I rarely hear of any of them. If you hear of some interesting event give me a post! Many thanks! Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

@@TomMcClean Glad to hear it Tom. The fife and lambeg scene is full of great people it doesn't get enough attention compared to the marching band scene but its a fantastic advertisement for Northern Ireland. I play myself I was glad to see a video showing the scene in a positive light.

Hi again Jordan, I was so surprised that there were so few people there that day. I didn't know that this massive world record, lambeg, gathering was even taking place. It wasn't promoted by media. ( At least I didn't see it and I do look. ) I looked on KZfaq to see if anyone else had filmed it. There were one of two but not a lot and nobody had a lengthy video record like I did. This once again surprised me. I thought it was all brilliant. Thanks so much for getting in touch with your very welcome encouraging comments. I'm just an 'ole, retired, amateur eejit, who gets a lot of fun through Youtubing and who wants to show the positives of our wee place. If I can be of any help maybe filming another gathering or doing an interview about the history of the lambeg etc please get in touch. I find it all fascinating. Best wishes from the Castlereagh hills of Belfast

I reckon all these guys do it all themselves. Like Robert there they all know their stuff. If they get stuck they probably go on KZfaq or call upong the collective knowledge of all of the group. Hi Tom, and thanks for another little culture vid. Great to see the Lambegs - not so jpyous on the ears though! Carson's Statue: I spent a few bitterly-cold nights guarding that bloody thing c1970. There used to be a little wooden shelter on the road off to the side - I think it may have been a Victorian bus shelter in a former time - but it was the best shelter available on that hill in the middle of winter, even if I did half-freeze to death! As you look at the front arches into the main building, I was ordered to arrest a certain well-known ITN reporter for breaking the police cordon. I made the arrest in front of the Inspector, led the reporter off to one side, and told him quietly to get himself away. In fairness, he thanked me and cleared off! We weren't all bad, you know! Keep up the good work. Unfortunately, I can't make it to NI this year ....again! The bike is having a new battery fitted 50 miles away, so maybe, just maybe nect year if I'm spared. Stay safe Tom. Keep up the good work, but I'd forget the hills if I were you!!!!!!

Old memories Reg. People haven't a clue as to what the RUC had to do during these bad days. Yes I can understand this about the battery. I normally buy and change the battery myself but on this bike it is so inaccessible. You have to get a heap of items placed back exactly as they were or else you are in trouble. Very futtery! I leave it ro a guy I know now. Younoticed I was struggling to talk and walk fast up that hill Reg. Oh dear. I have been living the high life too much recently. I'm trying to drop down to 12 stone from 13. I hate dieting but ..........needs must. Best wishes

@@TomMcClean Don't talk to me about m/c batteries Tom; the Burg400 is a proper swine, tucked into the dash at the back - you can't access the terminals without taking the battery out, and you can't get the battery out without stripping the dash! Three times in the last year it's gone dead through lack of use (thanks to Covid self-isolation), and three times I've had to have it collected and transported to the dealers 50 miles away @ £50 each way!! It's been there for two weeks and they have to get the battery from Germany. What with all the transport problems, plus supply difficulties, it could take another Lord knows how many weeks. An interesting piece of info' for you re Stormont. My Stepfather was the Warrant Officer in Palace Barracks during the 50's, and he was responsible for organising all the visits from Royalty and visiting dignitaries (along with the Dundrod m/c races). But in 1955 he organised the very first "Searchlight Tattoo" in Stormont Grounds. I had the job (aged 9) of taking posters to all the shops in Holywood. It was a great show, and drew quite a substantial crowd. I'd love to see the Belfast Telegraph coverage of that. I think it was the first time I'd ever been to Stormont; never thought I'd be guarding the place years later, or that I'd meet ITN Reporter Martin Bell - "The man in the white suit."!!

Most mechanics or people in the know, will tell you that modern cars and motorbikes and scooters etc are deliberately designed to make sure that the DIY man cannot work at them. Yes you get a basic toolkit but, try using it and you will find you need to get hold of some specialist ( expensive ) tool. You have to get it to the dealer to fix and that means money for him. With everything moving to electric, in transport, it will become even harder to fix broken down vehicles without a specialist. Once we get used to electric and have paid big money for new vehicles they are likely to move to hydrogen power and we will have to buy again! Sorry to hear that you are stuck Interesting stories about Stromont Reg. I remember Martin Bell well! He is 83 now.
