My wife and her father used to go to Alaska every year and bring home so much halibut and King salmon. It was incredible we would have halibut cheeks that were the size of a dinner plate. At the time I worked for a seafood company and my freezer was full of the halibut, salmon, King crab, lobsters and scallops. Today I look at the prices for that amazing seafood and it’s heartbreaking.

Beautiful Halibut but NOT a world record.... by a long shot. I've SEEN the wall mount of the world record sport caught Halibut. It is located in a museum in Dutch Harbor Alaska and it weighed 459 Lbs. caught in 1996 on rod n reel. This Halibut here looks to be about 130 to 150Lbs. I caught one VERY close in size to this one in the Straights of Juan De Fuca in Washington State around 2005 I think? It weighed 144 Lbs. and would have won the local Derby had I entered it.
@sergeynazarchuk24611 ай бұрын
Surf fishing halibut world record is 159lb this one came in at 150lb after draining and hanging for few hours, so possibly was a world record. Either way catching one of these big ones will be a record for us for a long time 😊
@sergeynazarchuk24611 ай бұрын
144lb for Washington is a monster and very rear for that area.
@j.c.isking216511 ай бұрын
@@sergeynazarchuk246 I stand corrected.... the best part is that it was captured on film. I used to work on a Pollock fish processor in the Bering Sea and one of my jobs was sorting the different fish species from the pollock. occasionally we would get some " Barn Door " Halibut. I'm guessing the biggest I saw was around 200 Lbs. and unfortunately it was illegal to keep these already dead Halibut which usually suffocate in the packed nets, so they HAD to be thrown back for the crabs to enjoy although sometimes not ALL were dead. One of our competitor boats caught a 30 ft. squid in the late 1980's and around that same time we actually drug up a human body who was probably Japanese because he was wearing Japanese raingear.... and no head! He was stored up on deck until we got to port and was named " Gnarley Charlie " by the crew.

Hallies are not great white sharks and cant really turn and bite you very easy, you need to show your hand down it's throat to make that happen. It's much more likely to flap and break one or both your legs if it's a grown one. This juvenile hallie will just give you some pretty cute purple bruices....

Look up surf fishing record for halibut, this one came in at 150lb after draining and hanging for couple hours, that means it lost around 10lbs. By charts 69” is around 170lbs. So big chance it was a record for surf fishing. Yes we all know the world record is a bit under 500lbs but that from a boat😊
@MrKveite19 ай бұрын
490 is FAR from a world record, it's the record for the PACIFIC hallies. However here in Norway the rod caught record is 540 and overall record is 695...@@sergeynazarchuk246
