My dad is a multiple world record grower of tomatoes and eggplant. Watch this video to discover valuable gardening knowledge! Unlock the power of organic soil biology! Dad explains how to make excellent universal seed starting soil mix. Great soil health tips from Dan! His knowledge of soil biology, nutrients and amendments will help you understand how to have the best organic garden soil preparation possible! Make the your soil the best dirt it can be by focusing on feeding the soil microbial biology, instead of feeding your plants. The reason this works best is because the soil microbes themselves are what actually feeds your plant's root system through mycorrhizal symbiosis!

You guys are my new go to gardening channel. I'm really enjoying the content. I am putting in an orchard this spring here in Montana. Soil is very poor. Do you have any amendments you might suggest adding? I've also heard from many people that I should start the trees in just the native soil, let them acclimate without any inputs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. A video on this would be great, if possible. Thank guys.

I am loving your videos. I went to my local nursery to purchase some of this stuff and they told me “it’s too much you will kill your plants”. I have 29 inch beds. I got a good deal on local compost so I filled the first 10-12 inches with it. The nursery mentioned I will kill my plants due to too much phosphorus. I was planning on filling 6 inch with top soil and the rest 10-12 inches with this mix. Would this be ok to do or should I remove the compost at the bottom of the bed? My mix would also include some compost at the top. I have purchased you recommended products through your link.

3 parts Fine Perlite 2 parts expanded Coco Coir 3 parts Peat Moss 1 part worm castings 2" Kelp 2" Fish Bone Meal 1" Blood Meal 1/2 cup VAm Endo Mychorhizea So if that is a 1 quart container the 2" ought to be about 1 cup, the 1" ought to be about 1/2 cup, and is it possible to add extra coco coir instead of using peat moss?
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork 4 ай бұрын
Yes you can add more coir,I prefer peatmoss because it has more nutrients, coir doesn't really add anything to the mix except being non hydrophobic which is why I use it. Have a blessed day!

Your recipe is very similar to mine but i have never added the mychorizal mix. I just ordered the Vam from your Amazon link. Just curious. Why add both coco coir and peat moss? Wouldnt one or the other suffice?
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for ordering using links! It helps us start to recover our costs incurred by making these videos. I'll ask Dad if he can chime in and answer your question. I believe it has to do with the hydrophobic properties of peat moss if it gets dry - versus the hydrophilic properties of the coconut coir...
@dantitsworth5204
@dantitsworth5204 5 ай бұрын
Thank you Luke, your father answered my question in a different video. And yes, it does have to do with the hydrophobic quality of peat moss.

That’s a great mix. But seems like overkill to germinate seeds in. Seeds have the nutrients needed to get through the germination stage and first set of leaves.
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork

Yes it's definitely more than needed ! But I know how a lot of people don't transplant early enough so I added a little extra in there for what I see the majority of home gardeners doing!

You can plant right away, there's nothing in it that will heat up or start a strong biological reaction.

I don't unless the bag had been sitting open for a bit. They're never a problem growing outdoors but they sure can be growing indoors, there's a couple organic products that can deal with them and maybe that's a good subject to cover in one of our videos.

That will be a great subject for a video. I also deal with mold in my seed starting seed mix
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork 5 ай бұрын
@salvadornava6292 Mold is usually the result of too much amendments added to the soil - which isn't needed in a starting mix because you want those plants out in the ground when they are 3 to 4 inches tall.
