Nobody is forcing you to put your keys or wallet into that pocket, but every single real backpack has a pocket like that designed for that items. The zipper is facing towards your neck/back and so a thief cannot easily open it, definitely can't see inside once open, and can only kinda try to reach their hand into the pocket hoping you don't notice them pulling backwards on the bag.

Alpha Centauri that's a tricky question. As far as I know, when we say ruck it refers to backpacks for normal use... and rucksacks for trekking and Alpine use we call them Tozan (Alpine) ruck. it's very rare we hear the word backpack.

Oh yeah for sure! This backpack would for sure be enough to to handle shoes, and the rest of your gym stuff. It might get a little snug with the textbooks and the gym stuff but you should be good! I had plenty of room left over with my computer and two textbooks. Thanks for the comment!

It's a older backpack I had a few places that sold it worldwide but they arent carrying it anymore. Im still looking for a few new sources. I know that a local shop where I live has one...its called "Gear Up" maybe you will have the same franchise near you?

This particular bag could have been discontinued/changed the name...all the links i had for it say sold out or unavailable...but I do know that North Face has a few pretty similar ones on their website.

Cross Production Hey! So doesnt look like ill be back till the beginning of May and I'm assuming youll want a answer before then so ill try to describe it! So basically the sleeve is pretty typical with soft fabric on the inside. There is a zipper on the side for easy access. And the bottom is also the soft material, which to me seams to probably be close to a 1/4 inch thick. I mean the back pack is consider a stand alone which means its pretty sturdy as a whole. Plus the padding on the back (like a inch) and the little "stand" on the bottom (theres like this solid rope thing on the bottom to create a level surface) make it basically your computer isn't going to touch anything. I mean depending on your computer's weight. Hope that helps! What i would do is go to a adventure store, and see if they have one, or a similar North Face one and check them out. But a company contacted me a while ago about sending one of there product that claims to be better and some solid with better feature. So HOPEFULLY they send it my way soon so that i can review it, and bring it on my trip. I mean i havent held it, or seen it, and cant give you any actual feedback but depending on the urgency of a new backpack there might something that will meet your needs better?
