Thanks! I think he wanted the guy behind me to go around but he said low wing “on” the runway. So I don’t know. Or maybe he wanted me to go around and the other plane behind me to land. We ended up both going around I think. Lol we still made it work lol

Hi Brian! Fisk approach is on top of a hill at Fisk, that is how they are able to see the airplanes and give them the rock instructions. Then the tower is out on the runway. Instrument traffic uses the regular center and approach frequencies to my knowledge but I'm not 100% sure on that.

My apologies, I was vague on my initial comment. Yes, Fisk is on the hill in the town of Fisk, know as Fisk VFR Approach Control. The tower is split into several different positions. The arrivals are controlled on one frequency for 9/27 by controllers in the big tower. The departures for 9/27 are controlled by the controllers on the haywagon (known as the MOOCOW) next to the runway on a separate frequency. In your video, at 17:55, you state the arrivals are controlled by the controllers next to the runway, those controllers issue the takeoff clearances.

Hey Brian yes I think that's how it goes. Its hard to tell what he asked me and I honestly forgot haha. I was under the impression that the guys on the end of the runway was tower (arrivals and departures) and the actual tower was more for IFR. But what you are saying makes sense the can see arrivals way better from the actual tower and easily control departures from the ground. You seem very knowledgable on this, do you volunteer at OSH?

I used to work at the Oshkosh newspaper and one year had to go out to Fisk to take photos of the controllers. There isn't much there just the top of what passes for a hill.

Both of us flew up together. I think the controller meant only for him to go around since he was high and coming up on my but since he said low wing on the runway go around I went around.

FlyLowLikeRylo you never know. There could have been a very high-speed aircraft behind them that you wouldn't even know about. Thinking about going into Oshkosh as you know it will be different every time and you will encounter the unexpected. I think I've flown in about thirty times.

Sam Hoskins Yeah I'm sure there could have been something off camera that we couldn't see and I concede that the controllers are under immense pressure during busy arrival times at Oshkosh. That said, if there were a faster plane overtaking the Viper on short final, you'd think they'd have the trailing traffic go around first and not the Viper that was already slowing down on the runway. If the trailing traffic had also had to go around, it could have gotten interesting as it caught up to the Viper. At 13:43 you can see traffic passing over that looks like it could have been a near miss as well.

They weren't the plane told to go around. The trailing traffic did go around also, that's why you saw the traffic passing over top.

13:15 "low wing on the ground go around please" Not sure what video you were watching. Controller might not have intended to tell the Viper to go around, but that's exactly what he did.

FlyLowLikeRylo Yeah, I think he meant the one behind him, but you’re right. You could hear the controller surprised when Viper lifted back off, too. Controller realized he had caused the confusion and adjusted well. They are really amazing.

It is Rip-en. Stress on the first syllable. Air traffic lady was saying it correctly.

As a Ripon resident, it can be pronounced either way, but I pronounce it Rip-en personally.

Living in New Zealand definitely doesn't help me with that! I actually visited my first air show this year and that was a lot of fun... but compared to Oshkosh it was quite tiny with around 50,000 attendees...

The fix is called "RIPON", both pronunciations are fine and used by ATC and pilots (it's a dialect thing) as there are no other similar spelled fixes in the area.

Ree-Pon 😁. Never heard that one before. I grew up in Wisconsin hearing radio ads for "Ripon Good Cookies". Pronounced like rippin', same as its namesake city in North Yorkshire, UK.
