World's Cutest Van Ride Along. 1970 Subaru 360 Braves the Freeway!

This is my 1970 Subaru 360 Van. Some call it a Subaru Bus. Later years were called Sambar. This is a Japanese "Kei" class vehicle. These were imported into the USA by Malcom Bricklin in the late 1960's. It's about a foot longer than a Smart ForTwo (just under 10 ft). It weighs 1100 lbs. These were designed as work vans and trucks in Japan and have a surprising payload capacity of 800 lbs. Power comes from a 2-stroke, 2-cylinder 360cc engine. Oil and gas go in separate tanks and mix automatically. Top speed on level ground is about 60 mph. In this video I brave the freeway (uphill even!) and merge going about 40 mph. I only get to about 55 mph on this trip do to the gradient. Title of "world's cutest van" has been confirmed by my girlfriend and is current. Please excuse my messy garage! I wanted to capture the engine starting and my exit routine. If you're wondering where to get a GoPro mount like in this video message me and I'll tell you how to build your own. Background music is Dust Brothers, Mixmaster Mike and the last one is a song I made with a Roland MC-505 and Boss SP-202.
This tripod is on eBay search item 272863633950

Good engine sound! You can see "Kei mini van"(They are 660cc or 550cc) a lot in Japan. It was 360cc in olden times. This Subaru is an ancestor of those. Awesome!

Cute! I had 2 Subaru 360 sedans when I was younger, started to restore them, but this guy a friend of mine knew wanted to buy both--I didn't have the time to restore them anyway, and he had BOTH running great in a week! I love anything 2 stroke, and these are no excption! BTW--the best bike I ever owned was a '74 Suzuki GT-550! That little triple would just SING--and fly too! Fast as a 1992 Kawie ZX-6 easily! Nice little bike!

I have owned several Subaru 360's sedans and cans, I drove them all over San Diego freeways and up in Orange county. I drove one van 35 miles each way to work and it always did great. Drove a sedan from San Diego to Portland Oregon and it did great, a fun trip. I bought a new sedan in 1970 and I was hooked. These are great.

I really enjoyed your video. I loved the old VW buses and had 3 and I saw one of these Subaru's at a lot....it was 1970 +/- and went to check it out. Took my brother in law with me and I remember us both getting in the car at the same time and when we shut the doors...our shoulders bumped. I don't know why I didn't get it then but I'd get it in a second now. Anyway... nifty bus!

Cute. Those 360 engines are neat units. About 20yrs ago I worked in a motorcycle shop, a customer bought in a homemade single-seater gokart that was powered with this same engine. Man it could fly! I've never seen the van model before, but there's still one person in my town (in New Zealand) that drives the tiny 2-door car model. Tiny rare cars like this are a real treat to see.

Chris have you ever heard of the Malibu Grand Prix? If not, basically it was a franchise of go-kart tracks mainly on the west coast. It was founded by Malcom Bricklin. Funny thing is the first cars used were Suburu 360 vans with the van bodies removed and fiberglass racecar bodies attached. They were called Fastrack and Fastrack II and are very rare today! I wonder if that customer had an actual Fastrack?

I remember it was an air cooled two cycle. Whether it was a boxer never occurred to me. All I did was clean the gas tank and oil reservoir and hunted down a NOS coil which wasn't easy to source at the time. (pre internet). Does yours have the hight adjustable suspension? Did you ever have a chance to speak with Rev. Ed Parsil? He knew everything about 360's and coached me into getting it tuned up right. I ended up selling it to the Subaru dealership in Medford Oregon for display on their sales floor. Who knows it might still be there. After that I got into BMW Isetta's, 2CV'S, NSU's, a '53 Messerscmitt KR175 all before they git so Godly expensive. Bang for the buck the 360 was the best fun plus it was to a degree somewhat practical going on grocery runs. It was amazing how you could carry 4 adults in reasonable comfort in that thing. It was kind of a dog on steep hills in my old neighborhood but it always made it up eventually.

Hee hee... the bit with "several minutes later... we have 4th gear!" :D ... takes me back to driving a rather underpowered 4-speed car (though not quite as slow as this one! trying to maintain 70 on hills, rather than 55...) ... ah, the relief of reaching the top of the hill and being able to shift back up and give the engine a bit of a rest... As well as the "check mirrors, and... arrrgh!" Seems to punt along quite nicely for 360cc though :D And surely this puts paid to all those people going "you can't possibly drive (insert much more powerful classic here) on the freeway, it's nowhere near fast enough!". So long as you get your merge speed up and pick a gap, you'll be fine...
@mspenrice

(Also memories of borrowing my dad's old Hijet van - again, a bit bigger than this, but not so much, and built along the same lines ... in fact, I believe it basically adhered to the later Kei regs, and was given a slightly bigger engine for export. Not any more powerful, but torquier and lower revving so it wasn't quite as stressed when hauling a heavy load. It was great fun to hack around in, even though taking it any faster than 60-65mph when empty was downright terrifying - less because of the knowledge that the crumple zone amounted to "radiator and lights" and more the way it rode and handled at that speed. Weighed very little compared to my car of the time but had about as much peak power, low geared, rear wheel drive, short wheelbase despite having one at each corner... turning circle wasn't much bigger than that of a motorcycle (could do a U-turn where most cars would need to 3-point, or worse) and if it wasn't for the incredibly slack differential I wouldn't have been surprised if I'd ended up wheelying it on a particularly enthusiastic start... A fantastic city weapon, in the days before I got my bike, and if I'd been smart I would have bought it off him when he emigrated because it'd be great for transporting said bike in and make leaving it somewhere on a night out or taking it to/from the garage so much easier... plus with the passenger seat unbolted and taken out (or tetrised onto the driver's seat) and a suitable plank and airbed arranged along its length, it could even make for a makeshift camper...)
