This boogie - rock lick has been around for decades. It has two parts, and every boogie woogie - rock player uses some variation of this lick. Includes a short rock-boogie song at the end of the lesson where the lick is used.

i saw Liberace in concert in my youth because the local "arts critic" slammed him, calling his act "schlock." so, i saw him Live in Concert and man, he was Mr Showbiz... and he could tear up that piano with pop, classical, rags, boogie woogie and, of course, The Beer Barrel Polka... have to admit it- it was one of the best musical concerts i ever saw... :)

Thanks for the video. I'm a swing/ stride player that always struggled with boogie. After learning that decades old lick, I realized my mis-understanding was on the downbeat, which changed my playing. Once I got it fixed (thanks to you) I can throw my own stuff into it. Thanks again!

Very nice licks. The second lick certainly had appeared in my childhood dreams:) Now I can use it in my Boogie-woogie improvisations.

Stick to the basics. Learn the left hand first. Really know it! Then learn that right hand. No short cuts. Do it slowly at first for each hand. Be able to play both parts without thinking. Doesn't matter how long it takes. But it will eventually happen. And the skills will transfer to other piano licks. Keep at it. You can do it!

Excellent question. Answer: I try a few things and decide which sounds best. What I try to "fit in" depends upon my knowledge, skills and personnal tastes at that time. These three elements change overtime. Overall, trust your own judgements. If it feels right it will probably sound right for your style. And just to be sure, record yourself once in a while. Ask your bandmates, too, or someone you can trust. Rule of thumb: keep it simple at first then add on later. Rock on :)

8-to-the-bar is a term that was popularly used during the swing band era. Refers to a boogie woogie feel. The time signature is 4/4 but the beat is established with eighth notes. So, instead of a straight four count (1-2-3-4), it is an eight count (1and 2 and 3 and 4) established by eighth notes. In piano rock and roll, the left hand establishes the 8 to the bar beat. In rock and roll and boogie woogie piano, the left hand rules.

Its curious, how in the beginning it seems like a blur of sounds, but after the explanation, its possible to see the "improvisation procedure". Thanks for it. And, another thing, I had this kind of music in my head, and Ive been looking for the piano technique for it in youtube, but now that Ive found it, Ive realised it was the famous "Boogie boogie" thing all along (one of those cases when Ive been hearing a word all my life, and not knowing what it was). Anyway, thanks for it :)

This is very clear - playing thirds in the key of C - i can even play that lick at the end, but I'm always stumped on the famous Dr John New Orleans lick which you throw in during your ending - ??

The second half - the impromptu- consists of licks and stuff that are taught in the lessons on this channel. Some of the stuff that I did was by "the seat of my pants" where I think the subconscious just spits out things that it remembered and what I - the conscious-self- had forgotten. That's part of the fun of improvising. Overall, you just learn and practice as much as you can, and then eventually your brain will use it when playing :)

Sorry, it would take too much time to explain each note to play in key of G... but using the Nashville number system (look at our lesson) and basic transposing you'll be able to figure it out. Yes, if you've gone through our free basic blues course, you should be working on transposing. You can do it :)

I think it would take too long to do that. But keep practicing and playing. learn your scales and chords. Eventually you'll see the notes and chords that another piano player is playing without having to think about it. It might seem too difficult to do, but it will come to you - eventually- I promise.
