World's First Aircraft - Lilienthal's Glider Flight

Starting in 1891 Otto Lilienthal made the first well-documented, successful flights on a heavier-than-air aircraft under the control of a human being. In 1893 he patented the world’s first production aircraft, the ‘Normalsegelapparat’, a monoplane glider that he sold at least nine times to various places in Europe and America.
He made more than 2000 successful flights and his aerodynamic data and flight reports were circulated around the world. Others enthusiastically took his design, learned from it and then improved it to take flying to the next level. Good examples are here Pilcher, Chanute, the Wrights, Ferber, the Voisins, Zhukovsky and the list goes on.
Samuel Langley as well as Octave Chanute and many others corresponded with Lilienthal. Chanute, author of the other most influential book of that time and later friend of the Wright brothers, followed Lilienthal’s approach of carefully performed flight tests and lead several younger men to successful flights since 1896.
Wright, W., “Otto Lilienthal”, Aero Club of America Bulletin, Sept. 1912 (published posthumously after Wilbur Wright died on May 30 1912).
Lilienthal, O., US Patent for a “Flying Machine” No. 544,816, patented 20th Aug. 1895, based on the German Patent for a “Flugapparat” No. 77916, patented 3rd Sept. 1893.
Lilienthal, O., Birdflight as the Basis of Aviation, 1st ed., 1911 reprinted 2001: ISBN 0-938716-58-1. (Translation from German edition, Berlin 1889, „Der Vogelflug als Grundlage der Fliegekunst“, reprinted 2003: ISBN 3-9809023-8-2.)

@@rohitmishra4640 That's how Lilienthal died actually. If I remember correctly, he started his late flights from top of a 200m high hill, and during his last flight strong wind rudely stopped his glider mid-air, causing it to collapse (or fall on the ground).

@@ltva8781 with the insufficient reflex and washout (twist) in the wings, it wouldn't be stable in a turning stall. I believe he stalled and it would have turned back into the hill. It was also a very common type of crash in the early days of hang gliding. Been there, done that.

Otto Lilienthal always appears to me as the father of aviation. I remember seeing in my childhood pictures of him, it remains strong feeling of grace and genious through exploring flight. Beeing a part of the machine, not only sitting on it, copying no one but birds, with a generous, both passionate and humble, and a progressive approach, he really should be celebrated as the biggest pionner. For those who think an aircaft must have a propeller he planned to put an engine before he died. Orville Wright told as an old man his biggest regret and mistake was to not having experimented longer soaring flight, where biggest secrets for flying were hidden. Having an engine too soon led to the seek fo power before aerodynamic. Anyway flying was in the air, maybe several unknowns flew in Asia or south America centuries before, who knows ... just dreaming.. (good japanese-Chinese movie ''Bird people of China''). For those who like discuss who (what country !😁) was first, there is a theory about a man named Whiteman (changed name from Weissman, I have a doubt maybe Whitehead/Weisskopf) who maybe motor flew in America before the Wrights. There is an interesting concept known as technology convergence, it explains how phonecall were invented simulteaneously in both side of atlantic. Not only copy or race but things in the air.. And also sharing of knowledges.. scientists and craftmen are a lot more cooperative and generous together even with different languages (than politics, industrial, businessmen of course), see the Concorde adventure .. An other one is about Nungesser-Coli Atlantic cross from east to west a week before Lindbergh, they may have been shot in north Canada coast, possibly seen as whisky dealers. Nowadays we still may meet pionners like Yves Rossy ('Birdman') Betrand Piccard, Burt Rutan, Colomban, and all those who allowed everyone to learn flying, hanggliders and paragliders pioneers. Henri Mignet for 'regular' aircrafts. And so many more. [And read on it, Aeropostale pioneers (Jean Mermoz, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry..)] I want to thank Markus Raffel for celebrating that spirit, and making it so alive. Beautiful performance. Like a piece of art.

I made one of these a few years ago, with a couple of modifications to improve performance. First, I converted it to powered flight with a pair of Pratt & Whitney F135 jet engines I got from a government surplus bid, plus I mounted six pairs of JATO bottles to assist in short takeoff. I then needed to add landing gear to support the additional 7,500 pounds of engine weight, followed by a fuel feed system (which I mounted under the fuselage) for those hungry engines. I thought about testing it first, but the gonzo in me screamed "F**k it!" so I hauled it out to the driveway, strapped on my Snoopy helmet, and fired up the P&W's. Released the brakes, gunned the engines, fired the JATOs, and WE-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-EEEEEEE!!!!! Handled like a dream! Loops, rolls -- I even did a Russian Cobra -- until I ran out of fuel. Damn. Did my best Major Kong imitation from Dr. Strangelove (Slim Pickens riding the nuke like a bull), and landed in a swimming pool, which was the only thing that saved my life. **SO** worth the eight months in hospital. So worth it.

One of the things we haven’t quite figured out is the tactile nature of a natural wing. The animal that is connected to that wing can feel air as keenly as you and I sense solid ground. If there were a way to communicate, in real mental time, the pressures on the entire wing surface I’m sure flying would not require so much energy

1:05 i like to be involved in this kind of project. I sugest to put your foot on back pouch to make the point of gravity more proportional other wise you need more lift instead have the same lift and planing. I mean you dont need to have the wings loking up. Havin wings paralel to the dround is ok making the G in the center instead in front.
