It sounds like it may have a backup generator similar to a Chevy Volt design - where once the battery gets low enough it kicks in. They allude to it at the 0:40 mark. They claim roughly 8 hours with that backup system. For the majority of calls (according to LAFD who recently got one, 90% of calls can be serviced with just the electric and no diesel backup) it should be fine.. I hope. I Have a feeling it will be a very long time before a lot of departments give up the majority of their diesel fleets. I am surprised LAFD is putting it at their Hollywood station, I would think near Skid Row would be perfect for putting it through TONS of calls a day. While the majority are medical, that's perfect for an electric vehicle platform. Short distance, no pump work, and quick response time.

We're making great strides in mitigating carbon emissions. Programs like this move us one step closer to a net-zero target. We have to start somewhere. California also has massive solar farms in the desert. Believe it or not, this is an excellent starting point.

We have multiple stations that have days where you are making 18-25 calls a shift including 1-3 fires. I do love the electric idea, but I don’t feel like it would be efficient enough to buy at this point in time. I only have 5 years on but I believe by the time I retire we will be changing or will have changed to electric engines.

ACT want to bring multiple of these over to Australia but I can see it being the same sort of thing. (A fake fire truck) Victoria Police added multiple Tesla Series X’s to their fleet but haven’t seen any whatsoever at all. More of a publicity stunt.

@@oinchadoomandwolfboy actually it is a hybrid, not fully electric vehicle, if the batteries are out it will run from onboard diesel generator. The main advantage of this vehicle is not ecofriendliness, but it's maneuverability, layout and crew comfort, especially the letter: it is dead silent inside and the crew cab is extremely spacious.

Utility actually offer pretty solid EV rate plans. Even the standard tiered plan is about half the cost to fill up as current gas.
