Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas departs Port Everglades, Florida. As the ship powers through the narrow inlet, it sucks the water out of the tidal areas nearby.

This happens sometimes when you get very large ships moving through narrow channels. Water can't move past them fast enough to fill in the space the ships are leaving behind them, so water is pulled in from off to the side, creating a powerful suction. Sometimes it can cause other ships docked adjacent to the moving ship to be pulled away from their dock and snap their lines, worst case scenario they can then collide with the moving ship. A very famous example of this happened when the Titanic was pulling out of Southampton. As it passed through a relatively narrow channel, this effect caused another ship, the SS City of New York, to snap her lines and move towards the Titanic. They almost collided but not quite. (Ironically if they had collided it would have saved a lot of lives, by delaying the Titanic's sailing, which would cause her to be nowhere near the iceberg when she eventually sailed.)

It didn't suck any water out. The port clearly has a sea break or a wall. The ship is so wide that when it's moving at speed it basically pushes the water that's it front of it out to the open sea , the water on the beach back fills the void left behind the ship. As the front of the ship enters open sea, the water can fill back in and fill up the beach again causing a rush and a wave. Simple really

Josh Hanson Can you explain exactly what is happening here? I searched for it before but all I would find was this video. It sounds like you are saying the ships props are sucking the water off the beach by pushing such a large volume of water behind it. Is that correct and is there anything you can add? Thank you.
@dieselyeti
@dieselyeti 10 жыл бұрын
Josh Hanson I think it's more the bow wave and the ship's large displacement?
@Zkkr429
@Zkkr429 10 жыл бұрын
That's not a bow wave. Going at that speed the boat would produce a very small bow wave, bear in mind the boat is in a lot deeper Chanel than the beach. The wave, if caused by displacement would not have the curvature that this wave has. It is typical of propeller suction, note how the wave curves to an almost horizontal parallel behind the boat. This is where the propellers effectively stop 'sucking in water. Propeller suction will have removed water suddenly from the beach and the wave is returning it to its natural level. If this were displacement the wave would have to come out again to return to natural level. Look carefully at the video and the relative water levels. This is propeller suction in action not displacement.

I have seen similar effects like this one in rivers, channels, ports, ... Even if a inland barge sails trough a channel you can clearly see the water level lower 30-40 cm, after which it immediately rises again. When ships are passing or overtaking eachother at a close distance, these pressure waves have caused accidents in the past!

Used to see it all the time when I was working on the freighters on the Great Lakes - especially in the Saginaw River. Shallow, narrow channel - the propeller actually "sucks" the water from around the ship, pushing it astern and the water returns in a wave like what is shown in the video.

I was on Oasis of the Seas a couple years backed and went through that very same channel. It looks tight but there was plenty of room for other small power boats to wiz by us on out way out of MIami. During low tide 8-10 feet under the keel of most large modern day ships is actually pretty standard.

The water is being pushed behind the ship by the props pushing it forward. This results in some water being sucked from the sides too, hence the water level lowers temporarily at the beach. As the tail end of the ship passes, all that water comes rushing back to shore. If the ship speed was slower, you'd have less of this effect. Everybody has heard of the "Titanic" but most don't realize just how much bigger today's ships are. You could fit TWO TITANICS side by side inside one of the Oasis class ships, they are gigantic. Titanic was 46,000 tons, Oasis of the seas is 227,000 tons!!!! Titanic carried 2200 passengers, this monster carries 5600 wow!

St John Smythe Well it's more: "We've prepackaged this adventure that you can have by proxy and see all these things" I have mixed feelings about tourism. I recognize the good it does, but also the bad it does. Acknowledging that, to me, it is more the types of people who go on cruises that I have issues with. They live in these safe little bubbles but think they are worldly for taking a cruise around the caribbean. They don't realize that just a few streets out of the tourism district there is real suffering. They insulate themselves against this and instead blindly enjoy themselves. I'm not saying they shouldn't have fun. But I do wonder if the experience shouldn't be tempered by the realization of just how lucky they have it.

It's called the Squat Effect...or, sometimes Bottom Surge, which creates a pressure variation that can, and often times does, pull either the bow or stern lower in the water. As noted by others, the displacement of the water at speed can increase the suction affect and create a definite hazard to small craft. The entrance to San Diego Harbor between Ballast Point and North Island Naval Air Station isa location where the "bottom surge" can definitely suck small craft into the wake of a ship just abaft of the screw(s) (propeller(s).

This has to be without a doubt the most epic video ever posted on KZfaq. I watch it at least 70 times a day. It should be played before every commercial break on all channels. How I did not find this earlier I do not know. Don't just watch this video. Live this video. Its almost religious.

This happens when a large vessel travels by and nearby water is sucked towards it to make up for water being displaced and then replaced. I witnessed this while dredging as we would have a large dump-scow tied up to our dredge and a giant container ship would go by. The dredge operator would have to put the bucket inside the scow to secure it...so the suction wouldn't part our lines to the scow.

Grotesque excess with 3,000 wimps who want their entertainment spoon fed along with all you can eat meals for a week. That ship is the last place on earth I would ever want to be. I'd rather sail my own where ever I want to go.

mtlnascarfan . It's a shopping mall atmosphere. A floating bus. Wall to wall people. For a whole week! I've done a lot of travelling around the world. When the tourist buses show up, leave. You experience different cultures by getting off the beaten path and out of the areas tourist usually go. This ship is a cocoon that insulates you from local culture.

seeburg220 Try refuting the points I am making instead of the name calling. Go ahead and take your vacation in an ant colony. It's actually a good thing you and your pals are all housed in a giant roach coach. You are predictable. All I'm saying is it's not for me. I can charter a boat in a new area and sail anywhere I want on my own schedule.

4stringmanagmaildcom Did it not occur to you, that your inflammatory post IS ALSO NAME CALLING ? "3,000 wimps who want their entertainment spoon feed"...Many of those "wimps" are little kids and the elderly. I assume you have no kids, nor parents for that matter, as you appear to be only consumed with your own well being, as revealed in your original diatribe on how this ship is "the last place on earth I'd ever want to be". If you're gonna dish it out, grow some thicker skin, pal. Btw, it's spoon fed, not feed.

For those fighting over who is bigger allow me to say the allure and oasis are twin sisters, the allure is bigger by 2 inches So isn't a big deal. Also the Oasis was set-seal a year before the allure so at one point the oasis was the biggest in the world.

Your logic here is discounting the point of a cruise. The point of a cruise isn't strictly the boat. It's to be able venture multiple places at a leisurely pace, without the stress of lugging bags to different lodging for every location, jet lag, and boredom. Theres plenty found on a ship that are not in shopping malls (quality conversations with individuals from around the world, wave pools, rock climbing) that cost no more than the price of the cruise.

Hydro dynamic forces at work. That's why if a person falls off the starboard side of a ship you put the rudder hard right to turn the screws away from him and to keep him in the calm water of the turn, it's also why larger ships tend to pull smaller boats and things like that into their sides. First proven when the RMS Titanic sailed and her pull caused the liner NY to break it's lines and almost collide with her.

Nonsense.What you're seeing is just the bow wave of the ship. It's physically impossible for the ship to suck water out of the harbour because it moves forwards by pushing water backwards -- back into the harbour. To suck water out of the harbour, it would have to simultaneously move itself and the water forwards, which can't be done without an external force.

its water displacement. The ships draft and displacement is HUGE, thus, when it leaves, it leaves behind a huge empty space that needs to be filled, thus, you get a mini-tsunami as the water rushes in to fill the space once occupied by the ship.

Water displacement, yeah it's why ice floats, boats push down and away the bigger the displacement the more of this equal and opposite reaction you get. "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." Newton published his laws of motion in 1687,

***** Allure is larger due to minor differences in the sizes of the materials. a ship as big as that can't be duplicated perfectly. there are going to be minor size differences and those add up with a ship of that size. i've been on both several times. great ships, great cruise line.

You're 50% right. In order to push water back, it first has to be sucked (or pulled, if you will) in from the front. It's a double effect.

I suppose, since all the really heavy stuff in a ship is below the waterline. Still, the Costa Concordia disaster (caused by entirely different means) reminds me of being an extra in the Titanic movie. I survived. lol

Well, as you said, tipping over and sinking because of the wind is a bit different compared to haveing a hole in the hull beneath the waterline caused by an iceberg/rock.
