It's our last day in Barrow and we are walking around on foot. The first stop is the local grocery store to do some price checking. We already knew things were more expensive up here but it's shocking. Then we visit the Inupiat Heritage Center and learn more about whaling. We find the highlight of our trip in the local craft room.

You will find that anyplace that is at all distant from where produce or meats or seafood are grown/harvested is going to get the best quality, and those nearest will get the worst -- because the cost of transportation justifies the sale price for quality goods.

Whoa... $36 bucks for half a melon? Here in FL we use wild ones we get in the fields for target practice! That is some sticker shock! Barrow does look like an awesome place to visit for a few days. Might have to add it to my bucket list for whenever i can get an Alaska trip together. Thanks for sharing!

My father and I took a trip to Alaska back in 1993 and we went to Barrow for one night. The morning we arrived we went on a tour on a school bus. The driver was the tour guide and he was good. We saw the worlds most northern bridge..high school...city hall etc and told about the hundreds of millions of dollars each building cost to construct. If I remember correctly city hall or the high school cost over 110 million dollars. My father and I went to a supermarket to get something to munch on (we sat down at a table and ate some fried chicken) and we saw the price of items. I think it was 12 dollars for a jar of Skippy peanut butter. Later for dinner we went to an Italian restaurant and my gosh the food was so good. A lot of memories I still have of Barrow like for example the speak easy that was located across the road from the sheriff's building. Alcohol was illegal back then in Barrow and I wonder if that is the case still today. Alaska was great just like my father was and I miss them both.

Mainly because everything we have is either flown in on a plane, or it is brought on a barge from Seattle or Anchorage, which can take days to get to us. Sometimes, things like Produce sit at the anchorage airport for days, because flights are grounded, or passengers get first priority on flights when they are full, so cargo sits until there is room. Because of this, there are times where we are 100% out of say milk for like 4 days. Literally sold out in the entire town.

The fact that a gallon of water and a gallon of milk cost the same at around 10 dollars shows that most of the high prices is because of the difficulty in transportation. It also explains why condoms are reasonably priced, given how light it is.

Teena Hanscom , Anchorage is the eyesore of Alaska. ANY town outside of there is better except for maybe Fairbanks where -50 below is not uncommon. Spent 1 year in FBKS & NEVER AGAIN!! BORING!!!! Did spend 27 years few miles outside of lil town called Trapper Creek in the real bush. LOVED IT til it got CIVILIZED by Anchorage weekenders who built cabins up in that area & royally F#*@ed it up. Before it was Phuced up by the CITYOTS it WAS paradise on earth. Got so bad we left. Not even the stunning beauty of Alaska is worth living w hostile IDIOTS!!!

What an amazing village. Thanks for the tour. Barrow reminds me of when I spent a summer in Nome. I thought that Wein (?) Airlines jet would never lift off of the Anchorage runway because the front half of the plane was full of cargo. I guess the only affordable way to eat up there is to live a subsistence lifestyle. You kill it & grill it. Try not to get eaten by a bear while you're hunting & gathering. Just can't get over how it was in the 30's in the summer when you were there (on another video). Glad you made it home safe.

I watch a lot of shows on Alaska and I've never been able to understand how they can afford new trucks, four wheelers, snow mobiles and boats and motors but live in shacks that look like they couldn't hold heat. With the food prices you showed how do they afford to buy groceries too. When I was in Vietnam I had a friend that was an Alaskan native he said he never learned how to drive a truck until he was drafted but had a plane and pilots license from the age of 16 I'm not sure where he lived but the primary means of transportation was float plane.

With the way prices are going in the lower 48 states in the corporation drug chains such as rite aid and Walgreens, we should catch up to your prices in a few years. I swear the only thing that keeps them in business is the pharmacy. Everything else is EXTREMELY overpriced. 7.00 for a half gallon of orange juice, 6.00 for a 14 ounce of hot dogs. Ice cream brand name is 8.00. Catch my point? Any how good video and thanks. Have a safe day and good luck.

That was an awesome trip to Barrow. Prices are high but the price on the craft work I thought was a bargain. Native work in the lower 48 like that would cost hundreds of dollars. I guess bigger audience equals bigger price tags.
