Sandton, a suburb of Johannesburg, is known as "Africa's Richest Square Mile." It's also located directly next to the extremely poor township of Alexandra, where Nelson Mandela had resided. As a result, Johannesburg is widely considered as the most unequal city in the world.

The reason for this situation can be explained easily. The ANC has been running the country for almost 30 years, yet in that time they've taken various state owned enterprises and run them into the ground, mostly through corrupt processes where they end up lining their own pockets. As much as the people continue to vote for them, they don't care about the people. All they need from the "uneducated" masses is to keep them in power. Everything from public education to public health care is a mess, and it just deteriorated over the years. Even the projects to build low cost housing was used as a mechanism by public officials to steal money. If the ANC weren't so corrupt, there would be more than enough tax revenue left to build apartment buildings, parks and schools in Alex. Unfortunately, the voter base is not willing to allow an alternative political party to take a shot at resolving some of these issues. You cannot do the same thing and expect different results.

You are very much right, Africans we have a problem and the problem begins with the electorate and ends with the politicians. There is no foresight or long-term thinking by the people and politicians. Greed and selfishness are the order of the day in Africa. Personally, I am sick and tired of my people's lack of will to better their lives.

In South Africa there are rich white people, rich black people, rich Indian people etc. And then there are the poor even homeless white people, black people and also other races or ethnicities. The main problem in South Africa is just what some of these people mentioned in this video, the anc government is not competent to run this country and are so extremely corrupt that even they have turned from poor freedom fighters in the past to stinking rich politicians who laughs at the suffering and calamity of the citizens whom they have been deceiving for decades with empty promises which never sees the light of day.

We also don't control the anc but people such as the Oppenheimer's. Most of the white South African billionaires left South Africa because of the anc and it's corruption. Also, not all white people are racists and was against Apartheid therefore we voted for the Africans freedom in a referendum during 1993 (Bet you didn't know that). The problem is a corrupt government or do you also support a bunch of mafia dogs.

The situation of Alex is a result of government's inability to plan and build affordable housing. People that live in Alex go to work each day and come back to Alex coz over the last 30 years, government did not build enough affordable housing in Johannesburg. You cannot plan for the city to have street cleaners, construction workers and domestic, workers, and not plan where they can afford accommodation with their average salary. And the slums are growing in Johannesburg due to foreigners mostly from Zimbabwe and Mozambique who come into the country without any means to live.

Government is not going to build a house for each and every citizens. There are basic services which can be guaranteed to the citizens like infrastructures, security, healthcare and education but not daily necessities and shelter. SA is following capitalist mode of economy, people should taught to be independent and have entrepreneurial spirits. Holding apartheid and neocolonialism banner won’t help black people. The Zimbabweans and other foreigners that you are scapegoating don’t make even 10% of the population!

One thing I hate about about our government is that once they build something it ends there no maintenance whatsoever occurs. Looking at many township schools, halls, and sport fields they still look the same way as they were before 1994 no change has been made to these infrastructures since then. This is an ongoing thing check the R15 million field in the eastern cape grass is above 1 meter in height and there is no running water in the change rooms do you think that this field will still be used in the next 5 years? No, lack of infrastructure maintenance is what is leading to a lot of facilities to be like this. We need to stop blaming our people about what is happening to these infrastructures in townships and in rural areas but start holding our leaders accountable.

So I have a question and i'm not trying to bait anyone into an argument but rather for my better understanding Many a time the narrative is pushed that 1 - Apartheid did this 2 - The ANC inherited the woes of the NAT Govt 3 - Wealth is in the hands of the select few 4 - Why don't the wealthy "save" the poor Why aren't communities helping themselves? Driving through Alex, Orange Farm, New Clare, Westbury, Fietas and other struggling areas its always the same thing. 1 - Nice cars parked outside 2 - DSTV Dishes on every house/shanty/flat/caravan 3 - Litter everywhere 4 - Many name branded clothes/watches/smartphones ( maybe they are fake idk ) 5 - Kids not in school ( i know there is a schooling problem but we can do better ) How could the areas value increase to a point of becoming lucrative/attractive for business owners/property investors when its in squalor? Why dont South Africans support one another? Its often heard time and time again from people contracting someone to do work that they are always looking for the cheapest possible solution ( and maybe that's all we can afford ) but when we get the cheapest guy in he usually screws the other South African over? I dont have any of the answers to our problem but I hope that soon South Africans band together, stop relying on passed failed and currently failing govts and we get it done Much love

Many German cities which got bombed and flattened during WW2 was rebuilt to look lie very beautiful and fully functional places during a very short time after the war. It's been 28 years when the last "structures" of Apartheid fell.....and nothing was done to fix these South African slums. A brand new black middle class and black elite exist in South Africa now, all with expensive cars and addresses with lavish spending power and yet, these poor people are in the majority in South Afrika and they just have to look on (at al this new wealthy class) as they slide deeper and deeper poverty, lapping up the excuses and fruitless promises of the upper African classes.

Nonsense, true wealth is in the hands of white people, which is privately owned. That why when you buy a property, most property owners and Land owners a privately owned and mostly white. Demographically blacks are the majority but they own no land. We are squeezed in small places like Alex and Soweto. Yes a few blacks have money, your Motsepe and just a few like Ralph Gumede but it's just a drop in the ocean. It's not true blacks only buy expensive cars,do your research, check which race owns most of the supercars in South Africa. Your Aston Martin, Bentleys,Rolce Royce majority of these cars are owned by the minority.

I got to your channel by chance...you wont believe that i was talking to my friends about the DEBT South Africa is in after seeing how much we owing , its somewhere btw 4 to 5 Trillion, its scary ...so this means that our kids are now in DEBTS of this Trillions...we will not be here together with these Leaders who keep on borrowing. We were given Political Power but not ECONOMY not ĹAND. I keep on thinking what was going on in Robben Island...did they talk about the future of the SA look like should we get freedom. Im asking ukuthi what they wanted and SS to look like should we get Freedom. I thought first thing is get our ECONOMY back and our Land back. About 3 or 4 years ago i saw bulldozers destroying beautiful houses cause that LAND they built on was own by a White person so they build those houses illegally, so this White person won the case so he went there snd demolished those houses it was in Johannesburg...i cried looking beautiful houses destroyed. The said part is that even they occupy thst space illegally, the fact that they built those houses without GOVERNMENT help that shows ukuthi all they needed was the land. Our Government should have interfered and negotiate to buy that piece of land for those people. Thoses houses were beautiful no jokes and what makes me Angry is that 72% of our land owned by whites, 15 % coloured, 10% by Indians and 3% by blacks. Im not joking please GOOGLE it and see for yourself. Why did ANC didn't changed the CONSTITUTION in the first place... especially the Land issue and the Economic issue. When Thabo Mbeki got in to power by two third majority, the first thing he should have done is to change the CONSTITUTION . President Nelson Mandela cause he was a Lawyer should have negotiated that LAND issue cause the same CONSTITUTION allows that should ap POLITICAL PARTY win by two third majority can change the CONSTITUTION. Up to this day thats the part i dont understand. Why they were EXILED and why they were jailed in ROBBEN ISLAND. TODAY people are living in hell. We have a bigger problem of foreigners. Im not against them but we can't have people who are not documented roaming around when they are chased away they take us to Our court ....its a joke.

The answer White South Africans were not defeated in a War. So, they had great leverage during negotiations. They retained the power and all the vestiges of Colonial era and Apartheid privileges. Since, White people retained the power, they got to dictate the political paradigm. For example, they killed off the radical Black political parties like the AZAPO, PAC, Black Consciesness Movement etc. The ANC was promoted because they could nominate and instal pro-White leaders like Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Ramaphosa. Leaders deemed dangerous to White power such as Chris Hani, Winnie Mandela, Jacob Zuma, Ace Magashule are ostrocised, killed and character-assassinated by the Media and Judiciary.

It's obviously un equal. Problem with people getting everything for free means you don't really know how to work and save money. And yes the rich have money its called working hard and saving money. But the only problem with townships is they have choosing to vote for the anc that use to be a terrorist organization. So why should they care about poverty or you not a single African country is doing well. And you can not expect the minority being white or Indian to just give money to you for nothing and why should they develop your townships when they do you burn and loot everything you destroy what gets built for you. You burn down schools you burn down almost everything. And yes how can the government pay when you guys are stealing electricity. Points needed to be made: 1. Number of minutes taken to blame Apartheid: less than 6. 2. Private vs public sector. 3. Second point again... Corruption. 4. When the ANC came into power, all debts were waved. 5. 20 odds year later, still blaming apartheid? Really? 6. Again you can't blame Apartheid forever. Eventually you need to see the plank in your own eye before you see the splinter in another's. 7. You dont know how much aid money has been stolen, in honesty no one does because they got rid of the person keeping track.
