In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a game where the world number 2 chess player, Alireza Firouzja, got defeated by the Bishop's Opening in just 15 moves. The Bishop's Opening occurs after 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4, which will drag most of your opponents out of their opening preparation.
Alireza Firouzja, playing Black against Mikhail Demidov, played the most natural-looking moves and yet his position went down gradually. That goes to show how powerful and aggressive the Bishop's Opening is.

For the puzzle: Qd8+, Qf8 is forced Then you play the rook sacrifice, Rg6+, he will have to play pawn takes rook or he loses Then you play h7+, black can respond in one of two ways: If he plays Kg7, then you take his queen with your queen, and then promote the pawn to a queen on the next move when he takes back with the king. The other option is he captures your pawn, in which you take his queen and then you win the endgame with queen vs rook

I like the Bishop’s Opening. I gravitate toward these more forcing openings which don’t have infinite amounts of well known theory and tactics.

In the game shown, black (Firouja) can at least get a draw due to repetitive moves. After white moves his knight to h5, black can move his rook to g8 thereby taking control of the G file. White queen moves to f6 thereby giving check. Black king moves to h7.
@HemalRuparelia1

Wondering the same thing. I suppose after that queen can take e7 with check and that’s considered a resignable material disadvantage.

Was it a blitz or rapid game? Also, apparently, Alireza made 2 mistakes, Qc8 and Kh7, but before that, the position was pretty even (now it's true even according to stockfish doesn't always mean one side has it more difficult)

What a great puzzle! I didn't see the solution until I saw another comment, but it is Qd8+, black is forced to reply Qf8. Then you sacrifice your rook with Rxg6+, and all of the variations from there can end in checkmate with proper play.
@Akronox

Could you elaborate on forced checkmate? Best I can calculate is being up a Queen which should result in a win but not up to forced checkmate.

The puzzle solution is Qd8+, forcing Qf8 and the you sacrifice YOUR ROOK on g6 to try to lure black out of his queen. If hxg6, h7+ and no matter is black's next move. Black will be dominated and we will have a queen for a rook which is the advantage!

I think 1. Qd8+ Qf8 2. Rg6+ is winning. In some variations after pawn takes rook it leads to a queen exchange and the black king unable to stop a queen promotion or black king unable to protect the queen.

In the game it's not totally obvious why Black resigns, as he is a piece up and can stop the mating threats by Rg8. White's best seems to me to be Qf6+ (a useful zwischenzug to gain a tempo) Kh7 Qxe7+ Kh8. Nf6 at any point is met by Rg7, so what does White do now? Probably f4 to get the rooks into play. Two pawns up with the more active game. Resignable at GM level, but at club level I'd want White to show he knows how to win it.

@@FRODOMIROS Okay, my calculations about that were indeed off. Yours as well: Rg7+ is not mate since Qxg7. You can play Qd7+ afterwards and you'll still promote the pawn, giving White two Queens. However, Rf6 is actually just mate. The Queen from d8 protects it. Completely overlooked that part xD

Twenty or so years ago when my nephew is in the chest program and Junior high School, I purchased the Chess Master 8000 program which had Jack switch skin narrating I think it was eight of his games. Josh favored Bishops so I just followed his lead. Fast forward to the last five years here in the 2020s and I'm often getting killed by guys that get rid of their Bishops by taking out my Knights and ruining my Pawn structure. Usually the knights taken out are on c3 or f3 when I play White or c6 or f6 if I play Black.
