on JackSucksAtGeography we upload a range of easy to watch & sometimes educational geography related content. I have successfully learned all 197 countries and flags of the world. I also look at interesting maps to teach us more about different parts of the world and their culture. On this channel I also play Geoguessr.

Modern Greece got its independence in the 1830s so the country as it is today isn't that old. However going of greek civilization the country should have been way older than that and once again would be hard to define the start of Greece as a country back then because each city was mostly considered independent of one another and the city-states would form alliances with each other

The fact that most of their old names still exist today is crazy. For example, Serbia, Georgia, Armenia, Greece.
@georgegkoumas5026
@georgegkoumas5026 Жыл бұрын
I don't think they had those names since the beginning. I think that for example "India" and "Egypt" as names came from the Greeks which are younger than them and the name "Greece" also comes from a different source. I don't know much about the first two (and what I said might even be partially wrong) but I do know some stuff about Greece's case. The name Greeks use is completely different and it is "Hellas" (Ελλάς/Ελλάδα) which was also not used until quite recently (compared to its whole history). In fact it is kinda hard to define ancient Greece because it was not a state. Greece used to be a couple of city-states with a similar language, traditions, religion and sometimes common goals. Those states though fought each other quite frequently but during peace they had some forms of unification like EU today (they did allow citizens to travel from state to state with relative freedom thought it depended to which city, Sparta was not much of a friend). They also unified in cases of emergency like the Persian invasion and they did peace treaties during the Olympics but since all of those were partial unifications they never had a name for themselves, they just called the others with names like "barbarians". Though as far as I know "Greece" might come from the word "Γραικός" which might be of Greek origin (else it has to be latin or something) and it might mean something like "strong" or "powerful". In short: some of those countries/people used to have different names and in fact even today they have. What is actually more interesting is how their languages still exist and still have their own identity.

The once Kathmandu lake was between 2.8 million and 10,000 years ago. The lake was drained by a Buddhist saint manjushree who sliced open one of the hills called ‘Chobar’ draining the water in the lake (legend/myth) . The fertile land was discovered in 723

This ranking is very random... There is no consistent criteria used for the age of a country. Do they count from the beginning of the current government/constitution (e.g. as they did with the US)? Do they count from the beginning of the first nation state which had a similar national identity as a country that exists today (e.g. the Frankish Kingdom of Germany/the Federal Republic of Germany)? They do count the years in which a country didn't exist? Do they use the first nation that had roughly the same geographical boundaries as a nation today? (e.g. Numidia, a Berber Kingdom/Algeria, an Islamic, Arabic Republic) Why is Greece counted as 2211 years? No single Greek state existed in 189BC. Ancient Greece was a loose collections of city-states/kingdoms that were only unified for 13 years by Alexander the Great in 336BC and didn't appear as a Greek nation state again until ~1821 (Byzantine Empire doesn't count as Greek). Why are India and Egypt counted from the first high civilization (which has very little to do with the country today, nor with the people, the language, the cultural identity or the religion and of which we don't know a whole lot) that was discovered on their current territory? Why isn't Iraq counted under the same criteria as Egypt and India when the first high civilization (Sumer) of Mesopotamia is several centuries older than the Nile/Indus civilizations? They literally are the beginning of written history! All in all this video is a mess of different measurements and standarts, inaccurate and of no real educational value. The easiest consistant comparison would be one of comparing the birth of the current government of a country. In this list, the oldest country would be San Marino, which has been one continuous republic since 301AD.

I’m confused too, Indian Civilization started 10,000 years ago so why is it only 4000+ years old?

I agree. Nationalism also didn't exist for most of human history, so people didn't have this kind of sense of belonging to the state they're in like we're used to nowadays. Concerning Algeria, it's the same criteria as Egypt, basically the first state and civilization founded by the natives. I'll let you know that the natives of Algeria (Berbers, also called Amazigh) still speak their language (official with Arabic) and that even Arabs are actually Arab-speaking Berbers, like the Irish. They might call themselves Arabs but genetically they're Berbers.

The numbers seem to be either arbitrary or a very thin stretch. Speaking of Ukraine, where I live, even if by far margin we recognize Zaporizh Cossack state as the predecessor of modern Ukraine (which it legally is not) that's still like 400 years old, not nearly 1100 as in the video. They seem to refer to Kievan Rus there, but that state has no political or hereditary connection to the modern Ukrainian state, only historical and cultural at most.
@Filonikis
@Filonikis Жыл бұрын
Based on your logic, none of the countries mentioned have political connection to the modern states. Modern Ukrainian state, however, states that they are the descendants of the Kyivan Rus empire.
@MouseTai1
@MouseTai1 Жыл бұрын
@@Filonikis I don't know about other countries, I am speaking only for Ukraine because I live here and I know its history. The state does not state anything, JFYI. Kyivan Rus was mostly destroyed by Mongol invasion around XIII century and have never recovered. The first non-mongol governance on these lands since that was established by Muscovite Tsardom two centuries later. And two another centuries after that, Cossack State was formally annexed by Muscovites into their emprie which lasted up to bolshevik revolt at the beginning of XX century. That is, even if you count Kyivan Rus in, Ukrainian state in its modern understanding did not exist in any shape or form for nearly seven centuries. I made some simplifications of course, but its close. That being said, Ukrainian People's Republic was established shortly after the dissolution of Russian Empire. It then was conquered by bolsheviks, yes, but Ukrainian government went into exile and formally existed up until 1991 when the Soviet Union fell apart as well. My point is that old Ukrainian government in exile DID officially recognize modern Ukraine state as its successor and dissolved itself. Not that Ukraine has claimed anything of that sort out of thin air. The political connection therefore DO exist. Formalized and official. Which is not the case for Kyivan Rus.
@Filonikis

@@MouseTai1 It is not all about states. It's about ethnicities and expression. Ukrainian people didn't appear suddenly, they come from Kyivan Rus and Cossacks. With this logic, Greece did not exist before 1830, since it was not an official state. But what about ancient Greece and Byzantine empire? Shouldn't we count it?
@MouseTai1
@MouseTai1 Жыл бұрын
@@Filonikis Not really. Because by that logic you should also count modern indians as Indo-Aryan peoples just because they came mostly from the same place in India, when in fact they are related very distantly if at all. Byzantine Empire was created by Roman civilization and in the likeness of Roman Empire, long after Ancient Greece had lost its major cultural and political influence. You seem to refer to the concept of nationality, which did not exist before early XIX century. Before that, people identified themselves rather by professed faith and spoken language. The modern Ukrainians wouldn't understand the language of Kyivan Rus, and modern greeks would also have hard time understanding language of Ancient Greece. Also also, Cossacks are not nationality nor faith nor language group but rather a social class of freelance warriors who self-organized into relatively small (by contemporary standards) armies. They were never numerous. They never considered (bothered) themselves with a state/citizenship matters. And Cossack Siches were destroyed by Muscovites eventually. So no, I am for the strict, well-defined, well-recorded and documented political connection.

This really depends on when you classify the country is founded. For example the Norman conquest of the Angelo Saxons to form the UK in 1066 which is 956 years old. Or the Angelo Saxons which would be 1612 years old? or Before the roman empire with Celts which would be around ~3000 years ago. So big gaps depending where you say a country is founded.
