@@FelixImmler Though I totally agree with Ronald, I am a regular not so sophisticated or professional "Joe" at sharpening :-b haha, something more simple please to get a good enough sharper result with the yellow stone bundled with the kits in Swiss champ (for example, or a cheaper sharpening stone) "?". Impressive stuff Felix - i use my blade probably 3, 4 or 5 times a week and i sharpen it with a basic sweep and its good enough 90% of the time I'd blunt that right away, so a razor finish isn't necessary - but you're efforts to prove a point are mighty impressive

I think that some kudos should go out to the sharpener also. That level of precision should be helpful to most everyone to be able to sharpen almost any knife blade to extreme sharpness. Your Victorinox is probably the sharpest I've seen, good job Felix.

Would you prefer victorinox to use a harder steel for the main blade on the popular models, if so what steel would it be ?

Good job. I am obsessed with razor sharp knives. All my knives are raroz sharp, including my swiss army knife. I use only sand papers from 400 to 1500 degree of graduation. Only first phase of sharpening, I do on 400 paper on the hard base below the sand paper until forming ''wire''. All folowing phases of sharpening I do gradually to 1500 degree sand paper on the soft base below the sand paper. Then I use leather strap with polish paste like old barbers and finish sharpening on dry leather strap. The result is mirror polished, frightfully sharp blade. It is cheap and relatively long lasting proces, but I am very proud of it.

Several years ago there was a guy on KZfaq that got his knife so sharp by hand that he could cut wet toilet paper and a hair like you demonstrated. Your point about the size of the granules in the steel is spot on. I tried dozens of knives, dozens and dozens of failed attempts. Then, one day I had success! Long story short, I found four different knives that worked. I showed it to my adult son so people would not think I was crazy. Of coarse I was probably crazy for trying it in the first place. :-) All my work was done by hand with various grade wet stones to a wet ceramic flat stone and strop with green compound. No machines. I was never able to cut a hair. - sad I tried the same experiment about 1 1/2 years ago with the exact knives and failed! Maybe my beat up hands have lost the dexterity? Maybe the TP was different? I have very sharp knives. They are NOT hair splitting sharp. That is a whole different level! I have never seen a SAK that sharp. Well done! Because of this video I thought for a second, I should give it a try again? Nope! I just stropped a few knives like I do everyday and got it out of my system! Again, well done. Thank you for posting!

Thank you for sharing this technique. I was able to grind down the small blade on my Swiss Champ into a whittling blade as demonstrated in your other video and sharpen it to approximately 17 degrees on each side and get it close to the sharpness you reached. Your videos furthered my appreciation for Victorinox knives and are why I decide to carry the Swiss Champ with me everywhere over the Leatherman Wave. Cheers!

That is seriously sharp! Thank you for the awesome content you put out. The secret is the stropping. My latest Spartan showed a BESS-score of 165 out of the box. After 5min of stropping I got it down to 85 and it was hair splitting sharp. The chisel grind on some knives are even easier because of the more acute sharpening angle. Stropped a brand new Skipper for a few minutes while watching this video, tested the knife and got the score 75. I usually maintain the blades just by stropping and if sharpening is needed I use Spyderco ceramic rods, freehand. They are super hard/fine grit and the set has 4 different shaped rods so you can do the serrations, too.

To produce a sharpened edge such as you are showing in this video, you are approaching a level of insanity, but l understand completely. Recently l have started to put a polished edge on my sharpened EDC pocket knives and am totally amazed at the level of performance that l am getting from D2 and other stainless steels. Of course, not at all at the level that you are attaining in this video, but it is good to see that the SAK is capable of this level of sharpness, and it gives us "knife nuts" a visual instruction in what is possible if we try hard enough. Thank you for your dedication and experimentation.

Felix. Try using a piece of denim rather than leather for a strop. Stick it down with double sided carpet tape. Use the green compound only. Also try stoking it several times per side using quite a bit of pressure, before flipping it over. I find that people who flip the knife at the end of every stroke, tend to anticipate the flip and as a result round their edge.

Thank you Felix. I always knew that my kitchen carbon steel knives were easier to sharpen but now I know why. I have always just sharpened by hand but I think the sharpening tool to set the angle would give better results. The best I have ever seen someone sharpen a knife was onboard a Japanese fishing boat. They used large water stones and did this by hand without tools. I have one of these knives and the angle on the blade is set at about 7 degrees. They only sharpened one side (the right hand side) and the left side of the blade was left straight. Years ago I did find a couple smaller versions of these types of stones. The 1000 grit stone is about 20 x 25 x 100 mm and the 6000 grit stone is about the same size but a bit smaller. The name of the brand of these stones is SUN TIGER and they are made in Japan. I don’t think you need to improve your sharpening technique because cutting hairs is about as sharp as anyone of us need… but if you decide to try a 6000 grit stone maybe you can split the hairs down the middle from the top to the bottom 😉. Cheers and have a very merry Christmas. PS… Thanks for letting us know about the level tool on the iPhone. I didn’t realise that it existed until now.

@@FelixImmler Hallo Felix, great job as always- I too have some of these japanese waterstones. Mostly for my woodworking tools. But they also work for knives for sure. But my impression is, that they work better on carbon steel than on stainless. But there is a great variety of japenese stones out there. Not only different grit differenthardenesses too. take a look at `Dieter Schnidt feine Werkzeuge `and Dick Werkzeuge. they have a lot of that stuff. My pocket knives to be honest I sharpen on a DC4 or even on the rough edge of my car sidewindow. Works good, not to the degree you have shown here, but it works.

Some double-sided tape and a piece of leather on one of those stones and you can make a strap for your knife sharpening machine. Also doing some Burr management would be really helpful. They make some pretty high grit stones for that particular machine and I think if you're after a mirror polished edge it would be a good idea. One last thing is a thousand grit edge with proper burn management and light stropping with no compound would give you a really good everyday carry edge. I used to always mirror polish my edges but recently I've been doing more of a toothy edge because I've noticed that although the initial sharpness isn't as impressive it lasts much longer. Great video

I'm expecting an order of diamond hones from 800 to 3000 grit next Tuesday. After they arrive, I'll be designing and building my sharpening jig. I stopped your video in the middle and dug out a new eraser. Thanks for that tip. I don't think I'll be trying to get as sharp as you just did, but you've improved my technique even before I've started.

I never knew all the details, but I have noticed for years and years how sharp I can always get a victorinox compared to many other blades. I have only medium and fine grit lansky diamond stones. Then I have a double sided small lansky diamond hone that was fine and extra fine when it was new. It is so worn by now, that I honestly don't know how much diamond grit is left, but it still works for second to last process. Then I have a length of leather belt that I cut, and use for stropping. All of my blades come out sharper than anything else I've come across. I might note that I've been practicing free hand sharpening, in an almost obsessive fashion, for about 30 years.
