Hey guys, today we are going to see a very mysterious and ancient Buddhist Temple in Sri Lanka, this was built around 300 A.D, so it was built 1700 years ago. This temple is known as Jetavanaramaya and you can see how it is built in the shape of a bell. I have shown you many Hindu temples which are usually in the shape of pyramids, but Buddhist Temples like these are called Stupas.
This stupa was the world's tallest stupa at the time of its construction and it was also the third largest structure in the whole world. Today, the height of this stupa is around 200 feet, but originally it was twice as tall, it was 400 feet tall, when it was constructed. As I enter the site, I notice something strange. The floor is made of bricks. Normally ancient sites I show you, the floor is made of rocks like granite, but this floor is laid with bricks. Imagine the number of bricks needed to fill the floor. Now, forget the floor, look at this stupa. The entire stupa is almost completely made of bricks. Guess how many bricks were needed to build this stupa? Archeologists estimate that 93 million baked bricks were used, imagine the sheer volume of that and experts are baffled at this fact. How could ancient builders mass manufacture so many bricks 1700 years ago? Even after all these years, this is still the largest stupa with a base-area of 2.5 million square feet. It is also the largest brick building ever built. It is hard to show sizes on camera, so compare my size, and the size of the stupa. Yeah I am that small. I mean, yeah the stupa is that big. But it was originally twice as tall as this size, think about that. Sri Lanka is known for its brilliant Buddhist structures.
While walking around the Stupa, I see a strange opening, a doorway kind of opening. I cannot access it because it is forbidden to climb to that level. What is inside this? Can I go in? Why is it locked? I need to go in and see what is inside.
Then I also see a shrine attached to the stupa. What is inside this shrine? Inside, there is a gigantic Buddha in reclining position, he looks mesmerizing. On top of his head, we can see that strange device, what is that. Everywhere in Sri Lanka, we see Buddha with that weird gadget fixed on his head.
I am very surprised at this hand. Is he wearing a wristwatch? Sure this statue is relatively new, but it must be a replica of an ancient statue which once stood here. I walk over to another statue and again, I see the same depiction. This bearded deity is also wearing a wrist watch. Did Ancient Gods use wrist watches? Believe it or not many ancient carvings show wrist watches around the world. For example Sumerians Gods are shown wearing wrist watches. Especially Anunnaki Alien Gods. Or maybe it is just a bracelet, but it looks very advanced, there are a series of multicolored circles inside, suggesting it could be an advanced device. Will this wristwatch somehow communicate with the device on top of Buddha's head? Is there some advanced technology involved? I don't know.
On the ceilings you can see these strange circular paintings. These remind me of cymatic patterns, this is how sounds will be seen visually. But on the walls there are even stranger paintings. Look at this lovely painting. Here you can see an elephant, but there is something special about this. The elephant is made of several women. Exactly 9, this is called NavanaariKunjara in Sanskrit. Carvings like this exist in ancient Indian temples.
But here, this is even more strange, 5 women come together and form a strange shape. Can you see what they are representing? This is called Pancha Naari Ghataya, meaning 5 women forming a pot or a vessel. What is the hidden meaning behind this? If you know the answer, you can leave it as a comment in the comments section.

Praveen bhaiya has to learn the ancient tamil language, and other languages of the country he visits. Then he reads ancient texts which is not at all easy to put together even if u know the language. Praveen have lack of knowledge of Budhism that's why he is talking like a child. He has no knowledge of ancient history of India ..... Is there any hindu temple in india before 9th century ....the answer is no.... Almost all ancient Hindu temple converted from Budhism in 9th century, for instance dwarka temple in gujrat, a budha statue converted into krishna , (anyone can see in many videos).., there is no single evidences of Hindusm which is older than 3 rd century, but budha archeological evidences are laying everywhere in Indian subcontinent. I think Praveen should to study 'The ancient history of India' written by Alexander conninghum based on Archeological evidences. Thanks Praveen for giving wrong description... You believe it or not in our Mahawansa and other literature says there ware 84,000 buddhist temples in india which made by Asoka the grate.. I agree with your comment and i like to add this.. When Sri Lankans and other buddists come to Buddha Gaya in 19th century. It was a Hindu temple. The head was called" Mahantha". Lord Anagarika Dharmpala(Sri Lankan) filed a case in indian High Court and won. Now Gaya is open for world Buddhists.

@@dasunjana161 we knows now these things.. the occurrence of Bodh Gaya (because my native village is almost 100 km far from gaya), at the time of Satpal monk is very famous. This is how a Budhist temple converted into imegenery Vishnu (to Gautam budha) by mahants. But due to Satpal Ji now bodh gaya is in safe hand. In 9th century lots of Budhism monestries and temples looted and converted into Vishnu temple by mass murdering by shankracharya and their followers. Bihar (means monestry) is a state where I belongs, was a center of Budhism origine and research, thanks to samrath priyadarshi Ashok and her daughter sanghmitra and son mahindra expanded Budhism in other part of the world.... Everything is described in Indica book of megasthanese who clear cut described about Chandragupta Maurya's royal palace in Patna (Patliputra), archeologists found the palace in early 19 century in Patliputra. History never dies, archeological evidences of Budhism is everywhere in Indian subcontinent, it's from afganistan to Malaysia (east - west) or from mangolia to srilanka. @Vivek Kumar Jha Sri lankans were not hindus before Buddhism. The Religion before buddhism in Sri lanka was native demonic spiritual worshiping. Mostly primative religions. If there was hinduism in sri lanka buddhism would not spread so quickly. but the quick spread of buddhism proves it was the only organized religion then. You are probably talking based on story books like Ramayana and ect. But historical facts proves otherwise. And Sri lankan stupas are nothing like hindu constructions. Even the stupas built by emperor ashoka is nothing comparing to the Stupas built by Sinhalese kings.

I love all your contents Praveen Mohan but I think you wrongly explained the "Device" on Buddha's head. I guess it is the 7th Chakra, the "Sahasrara Chakra" as described in Kulakundalini yoga. According to this yoga the 7th chakra is activated when a human is enlightened. It is the symbol of Lord Buddha's enlightenment. Not only Lord Buddha, in a previous video I noticed it was shown with many idols. I think this was shown to represent the enlightenment of a human being.

That gadget on the head of lord buddhas statues calld "siraspatha" that has been added to the status later, some status like "awkana" it has added later according to the archeologists. And it may be added for the beauty of status . 5 women forms a pot is "pancha nari ghataya". And it represents prosperity. They ara traditional srilanken designs specially we can see more in kingdom of kandy era in srilanka . Specially in wood carvings . Or as temple wall paints. 5 headed, 7 headed sanke or king with snake head is is calld " muragala" and ancient people believed it gives security for the religious places. Earlier it was a simple stone brick, later it has added "punkalasa", "snake" and "na raju" that is snake king, Praveen i enjoy most of your videos and lots are informative and i wish you all the best. IMO, the device (which does resemble a flame) is the nested representations of the 3 bodies; the physical, astral and casual. The 3 are nested within each other, concentric and rising flame-like to the heavens because Lord Buddha's samadhi is ever unbroken and this is what the device means to portray, i.e. full perfection at every level.

I am a Srilankan, and those he was talking about were clearly not wrist watches, they were bangles with gems attached. And it's not rare or strange to see that flower like part above buddha's head in sculptures actually it's very commen to see..maybe it was to depict enlightenment and those shrines with paintings were built very recently. Certainly the Sthupa is a wonder! But the other things you mentioned wasn't that much

the stupa was found very recently when it was at this height. and it was covered with trees and bushes. because the whole stupa was built with bricks and bricks are made of soil. so during the 1000s of years passed rain has done his part in washing the soils of the bricks away. it was then reconstructed at the founded height and size. in the record (written) it is mentioned that it is four hundred feet high.

there's a stair case to go up, all the way to the top of this structure. this's a main part of a complex Buddhist monastery made for "Mahayana" sect and it is a result of the clash between Theravada and Mahayana. however; THE INTERESTING THING here IS this stupa structure and 2 other stupa structures were constructed to be perfectly aligned with the three stars in the constellation of Orion, namely Rigel, Al Nitak and Bellatrix. the statue you've mentioned as a "Shiva" statue (@ 6:37) is actually a statue of "Sooniyam" who has an origin dates back to the reign of the first selected king of "Helaya" (modern day SL) "maha-sammatha MANU". the new year festival celebrating in SL was believe to be his crowning festival, which was later derived in to a celebration of marking the end of the previous year and beginning of the next year. all those Hindu god statues were build in recent years, the most likely scenario is that those were placed without understanding the original context of this site and purely based on the influence of Hinduism. the influence of Hinduism can be clearly seen even in ancient artifacts, for an example take a look at "Sandakada-Pahana" they removed the bull figurine from that after south Indian invades cause the fall of "Anuradhapura" kingdom ! sandakada pahana is a stone made half circle artifact, which are often placed at the entrance of a temple. some are just a plain stone surface but later those were decorated with many carvings along with animal figurines.

You are right to say the light on Buddha's head is the light of the world. But in actuality, when Siddhatta gain enlightenment as a Buddha, his body shine with 7 colours the same colour as the buddhist flag. Even when the Buddha smile, Ananda who was his assistant and walking behind the Buddha will know due to the change of the bodily light emitting out. The light of the Buddha's Body continue to shine day in and out without stopping. As a supreme being, the Buddha stand above all devas, deities, gods and Brahmas.

@@thewatcher2328 Buddah was enlightened and his light shines. He said we need work things out. I keep bees and bees work things out. Their brain is tiny compared to ours. When a bee is born she/he knows nothing. Most bees live for only a month. In that month they learn millions of facts and then die. During their short life or long life( the winter bees) they experience lots of things. Some happy some sad but they live just like us. Buddah worked out that all existence needs respect. These opening s are to "daathu garbha" or the middle of the stupa. Something sacred is placed in the daatu garbha, and then it is sealed and not meant to be open. however Sri Lankan archeologists opened them up, and examined the ancient artworks, especially frescoes which were very well preserved because of the closure. Most of these are such entrances. Since valuable are moved to the museums, these entrances are just blocked like this to prevent accidents.

Prashant Vasaikar as a Buddhist, I have the answer to both questions. The ‘device’ on the head of Buddha is called an Usnisa. An Usnisa is one of the 32 great marks of a Buddha. The original purpose has been lost in time but for sure, I can say that it is not an advanced device with technology. Secondly, the ‘hand watches’ were a common depiction of Indian Art when it came to bracelets with gems. Later on, when Buddhism spreader to China, the art style of a gem on the bracelet also followed along with the religion, which then after, spread to Japanese Buddhist art style, and to Korean Buddhist art style, etc.
