Discover the General Grant Tree Trail in Kings Canyon National Park! SUBSCRIBE to our channel (it’s FREE) for more travel adventures. 👇 More info in the description below.
Located in Kings Canyon National Park, the General Grant Tree is largest giant sequoia in the General Grant Grove and is the second largest tree on earth (by trunk volume). However, if branch volume were taken into account, it would be the 3rd largest tree in the world with the President Tree being the world's second largest tree. The trail is heavily trafficked and is a 0.75 a mile loop with 50 feet of elevation gain.
The General Grant Tree tree was named in 1867 to honor Ulysses S. Grant. It towers at 268 feet and is 40 feet in diameter making it the world's widest known sequoia. It is estimated to be around 1,700 years old. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the General Grant Tree to be the Nation's Christmas Tree in 1926. And in 1956, Dwight D. Eisenhower designated it as a National Shrine, a living memorial to those who fought and died in war.
Along the trail is the Fallen Monarch Tree, which is a large hollow sequoia. It is possible to walk through it which is pretty cool.
Shortly after the General Grant tree is Gamlin Cabin. This cabin was originally built in 1872 and has been reconstructed and relocated several times in the area. The cabin has served many purposes and was used as a storehouse by the US Calvary and even became the place where the first park ranger lived while stationed there.

Went and saw both grant and the monarch, it started raining heavily so my wife and I took shelter in the monarch, it was beautiful and we had the area all to ourselves because of the rain. I’ll never forget get it. It was almost like ancient giant living things give off a type of relaxation, making you feel humble and small. If you go there you’ll understand.

Even though you know in your head how big these trees are, NOTHING prepares you for the thrilling experience of standing next to one of those giants in person. You feel like a guppy next to a blue whale! I may never get back, but I visited the Redwoods in both Yosemite & the groves on the coast. I spent one summer with my sister in Gardnerville Nevada, & we got to do some sightseeing then, & also when my mom came to pick me up. My sis, her young family and I did a day trip to Yosemite. It is truly spectacular - in every sense of the word. There's so much to see. When we left at sunset, the setting sun lit up Half Dome and it looked exactly like it was made out of gold! Another time when I was coming down from Lake Tahoe one night, I had the opportunity to see the stars without light pollution & without 5000 ft of atmosphere. There were so many more that were visible because of that, & they were so much clearer than I had ever seen - you felt almost like you could reach up and pull diamonds from the sky! Yosemite should be on everybody's bucket list. And no matter where you go to see them, the Giant Redwoods and Sequoias are a definite must-do.
