you have to seal the wood and do not use portland cement. use lime putty and sand. one part lime paste and 54-5 parts sand. self healing and more flexable.

I had a cordwood house for over 30 years and the only logs that split and had gaps were the ones that were whole, not split. We also dipped each log in preservative before we used them. It was a very cosy home! Those walls were 2 feet thick. The only reason I am not there right now is that we had a massive flood and one corner of the house sank down into the sand below and the roof actually slid off a few inches. It was condemned as it would have cost more to fix it than it was worth. And you are correct about the cement! LOVED that house!

I am presently building a 106 sq ft cordwood chapel using old cedar fence posts, and Type S mortar. Walls are 11 inches thick, on a 5 inch deep footing.

We have all sorts of cordwood homes and buildings here in Canada. Our humidity is all over the place and i don't see these issues. For every broken wall, there are 10 good ones. I've seen a lot more problems with stick and brick construction but that may be because there are more of them. It depends on how you construct the walls as well. Papercrete works better than mortar.

Using a mortar with more lime and sawdust in it, is normal procedure... the cavity system is also standard... Finally, a post n beam structure would fix the issues with those fallen down old houses.. Bluntly, you sound pretty ignorant for someone telling us what rhe pros n cons are... I reccommend reading a book... specifically, one by Rob Roy, who discusses these issues and engineering in his books... self evidently, the technique is for owner builders. Paying soneone defeats the main purpose of " sweat equity" ...

Instead of mortar how about using only wood and poly?

Is there a posibility to burn a little the wood to seal it? And then use it as a decor wall? Or is better use cob and straw? My weather is 70 to 80% of humidity. I live in a forest (pines and oaks are the main trees here)
@greenfutureyt
@greenfutureyt 5 ай бұрын
Is there much variation in humidity across the year where you live? You could create a hybrid home. Utilising the wood you have available for the structure, then cob and straw to insulate.

@@greenfutureyt thank you so much. The humidity is 70 % almost from summer to winter. Only the spring give us a break 😅

Yes, Cob with " hat n boots " would work well for that... like " Oregon Cob " ... theres no rules against mixing walls, as well, especially if you have a solid post n beam frame.

I'd say that other ways d be better than burning... A liming mortar n lime over outside would limit rot.. B asphalt/ tar works. Ugly n toxic in some eyes, the smell fades n it works. ( outside ) C using a borax solution on outside would limit rot issues.. Basically keeping the walls dry is enough though...

which are better alternative? (for example to build in spain) rammed earth?
@greenfutureyt
@greenfutureyt Жыл бұрын
Depends what the landscape around you is like really. Could use stones if they exist near where you are. Supposing Spain is relatively dry compared with the UK rammed earth could work. I would probably couple it with a timber structure.

Semi sarcastic reference to the "bad deed" of building a cordwood home in context to the video. Kris is great. I love his channel, hence why I linked it in the video.

@@TheArchon1 he is ace. I love what he is doing with the 18 acre plot of land he bought. Whilst I don't think cordwood construction is a good building material for most people, the construction quality of his cordwood hut is honestly phenomenal. His videos inspire me to purchase an 18 acre plot of land at some point, and take on similar projects. Although, nowhere near that point at the moment!
