I’m a Lithuanian and I read all of Ruta Sepetys books. My favorites are Salt to the Sea and Between Shades of Grey. The story in Between Shades of Grey is personal to me since I had family members deported to Siberia. However, I have to say that after I read a memoir by the person who survived these horrors herself, I feel like now Ruta Sepetys’ book does not hit me as hard as it did when I first read it.

"Night" is an autobiography/memoir NOT a novel or fictionalization. The author and publisher, to my knowledge and few minutes of research, always maintained it is factual and should be classified as memoir/autobiography. I know some sites and some people have considered to be novel-like in structure, but especially given the subject matter I really don't think it's fair to classify it as a fictionalization or say it has "some things from his experience" when Wiesel said it is a factual account of his life and experience.
@olasard
@olasard 2 жыл бұрын
It was originally sold as a fiction novel as Wiesel changed some minor details thinking that advertizing it as fiction would be easier for younger readers. It is a memoir but many people still say that it is fiction as that is how it was originally sold.

This video got me so excited. Historical Fiction is my favorite genre, especially books set during World War II. I don’t know if you’re heard of it, but I would check out This Light Between Us by Andrew Fukuda. It’s about two pen pals during World War II. Alex Maki is a Japanese American and is forced into one of the Japanese Internment Camps. Charlie Levy is a Jewish girl living in France. It’s a combination of prose and their letters. I’m only a little bit into it, but it’s amazing. One of my library science graduate school classmates recommended it in our YA Lit class. The second I read her description of it I was hooked.

It follows a Nazi officer, a prisoner in Ravensbruck who is experimented on and also a woman fighting how she can in America. I loved having all 3 vastly different perspectives in one book. Also, The Rose Code by Kate Quinn is probably my favorite WWII book I have ever read! I personally loved Atkinson’s Life after Life, the London bombing scenes are unforgettable. Eye of the Needle is old but good, same for the Herman Wouk series Winds of war. It feels like no one reads them anymore but they were a standard and very exciting. Of course, All the light we cannot see was super hyped but worth it. I’m slowly reading my way through Kate Quinn. If you can read The blue bicycle by Regine Desforges, a French author in translation, don’t hesitate. She was accused of copying Mitchell’s Gone with the wind… and The Nightingale has been, hum, very influenced by Desforges, quite ironic actually.

i absolutely love the book thief! ive read it 3 times since ive first picked up the book after watching the movie. it brings such a different perspective to reading and it is one of my favorite books of all time. i always recommend it to people. it has some of the best quotes. my favorite being "i've seen so many young men over the years who think they're running at other young men. They are not. They're running at me" its such a powerful story that showcases so many people and the difference between everyone. its gut-wrenching and you will probably cry but i love the book so much. i got my 8th grade reading class (this is about 5-6 years ago) to watch the movie for our WW2 unit and everyone loved it.

I read a lot of books set during WWII. I can recommend 'Henrietta's War: News from the Home Front 1939-1942'. Also the only part of Britain that was occupied by the Nazis in WWII was the Channel Islands- Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark and Herm; you can read about the experiences of the residents left behind in 'Life in occupied Guernsey: The Diaries of Ruth Ozanne 1940-1945', + 'Guernsey under occupation''. These probably available through libraries! If you're interested in the women in the air during WWII there is another book called 'Night Witches: The Amazing Story of Russia's Women Pilots in WWII ' by Bruce Myles. This is just a few different stories and cover different nationalities. There are a lot out there actually.

This is the first video of yours that I have found, and I am already in love with your book taste. Out of all of the books mentioned, I have read all but three (We Are Not Free, Wolf by Wolf, and Maus), and they were all amazing. Before I watched the video, I made predictions about what books might be in it, and you included all but two of them, which are We Were the Lucky Ones and Beneath a Scarlet Sky. We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter is a fascinating book that follows the stories of several individuals in a Jewish family. It is amazing because, as you mentioned about a lot of the books in the video, it is educational about how the war affected less talked about people and places. The characters travel throughout France, Poland, Russia, and even parts of the Americas, and help to give insight into the often overlooked events there. Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan is based on a true story about an Italian teenager who risked his life to smuggle Jews over the treacherous Alps to neutral Switzerland. In addition, without spoiling anything, he also goes on to experience and retell events in other areas of Italy that are fascinating and not very well known. I could go on and on with recommendations (i.e. A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell, Traitor by Amanda McCrina, etc.), but for the most part, you got my favorites. Thank you so much for this wonderful video! You’ve earned yourself a subscriber. :)

About WWII I would recommend one I have recently read, Three Sisters by Heather Morris. It's about the real life story of three sisters from Slovakia who survived Auschwitz. My non-european historical fiction recommendation would be "The mountains sing", it's set in the modern vietnamese history including the war but also the events before that. I have also recently read it and I really liked it. Another non european historial fiction that I really liked was "The Island of Sea Women" by Lisa See. It's set in a small island in South Korea where women used to work as divers.

I also recommend Heather Morris! She wrote the tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka's Journey. She also published a new book recently that I haven't read yet.

I really reccomend How We Disappeared by Jing-Jing Lee. It is set in the past and the present and it follows a woman from Singapore.
