THE THREE LIONS !
After winning the 1966 World Cup, England could not achieve the successes it desired in world football. As always, they are assertive with young generation. But they have a very strong rival like Italy in their group. They are also in pursuit of surprises in Finland. An exciting competition awaits you. Have a good time :)

@@nigeats65 It was certainly an incredibly exciting game even if it ended in agony for England, pure drama right up until the end! We didn't really know how good Poland were at the time, and they were even better when the 1974 World Cup finals came around with the addition of young players like Szarmach.

softlystroll. Watching this has brought back some childhood memories. Most England games weren't shown live on TV in those days and you had to listen to the BBC radio commentary by Peter Jones, Bryon Butler et al. I particularly remember the stumbling performances against Finland and Luxembourg at home where the frustrated Wembley crowd were chanting "What a load of rubbish" in response to England's uninspiring efforts. England only really gave two good performances in the qualifying campaign, beating Finland 4-1 away and Italy 2-0 at home. It was very disappointing as Liverpool won the European Cup in 1977 with a largely English team so it seemed the talent was there.

To be honest England we’re unlucky to get perennial qualifiers Italy in the same group, FIFA had yet to get their act together with proper weighted qualification groups. Despite some patchy performances they won all their games bar Rome. In the modern era of 6 or 7 team qualification groups they would likely finish top with that record. @@user-ly8bq3tx5j Yes it was very frustrating the difference between the success at club and international level. The Liverpool team that won the European Cup in 1977 had nine English starters, and Ron Greenwood picked seven of them for a friendly against Switzerland at Wembley. It was only winning 2-0 in Luxembourg that done for England in this group. I can remember the newspapers before the game saying England needed to win 10-0 to rack up the goal difference over Italy. The following morning, they were saying things like 'Oh No England. A Terrible Performance. 2 out of 10.' They were correct though as it did go on goal difference seeing as England and Italy beat each other in the home games by 2-0, therefore, the victories against the two minnows were going to matter in the end. Italy ended up with their goal difference three better off than ours.

@@r4h4al Picking coaches from winning clubs was the problem. Some players like Keegan, Macdonald and Hughes could not adapt to Don's style of play!! Germany's Helmet Schoen, Italy's Enzo Bearzot , Poland's Kazimierz Gorzki were not from winning clubs, but were part of a long term coaching plan ascending from youth to national teams. Anyway, Don Revie was not an England man. He was more suitable for club like Leeds where he had long lasting excellant relationship and trust with the players. Bremner left for Hull when Don left for England in 1975. The continuity was broken. No smooth transition. Brian Clough was no Don Revie, was sacked after 40 days!! Leeds got relegated in 1982!!. A very Sad Day for such a Top Club in the World!!!

@@r4h4al Southgate was a good player then.. But he can't do much because he lacks quality players like Terry Venables had in Euro 1996 Gaza, McMahon, Shearer, Tony Adams. They were of a different class!!! The current lot plays fast but lacks imagination and consistency. They are not good as Spain, Belgium or Italy. Too many foreign players in EPL caused this. Italy faced this in 1980s but Italian FA quickly restricted the number of foreign players and emerged players like, Zola, Barresi, Baggio, Paulo Maldini. Many national teams have declined terribly due to too many foreign players. Even Germany and Netherlands have declined!! Germany went home after round 1 in 2018. That's unheard of!! Every 2-4 years we see a drop in quality. Its a different game now with emphasis on theatrics and faking injuries frequent divings!! And WAR is only helping gambling syndicates to fix matches !!!

All of this channel's videos are great, but there's a small mistake in this. The first match versus Italy was in '76, not '77.

PHIL NEAL, EMELYN HUGHES, DAVE WATSON, TREVOR CHERRY, RAY WILKINS, RAY CLEMENCE (standing) STUART PEARSON, BRIAN TALBOT, KEVIN KEEGAN, MICK CHANNON, BRIAN GREENHOFF (under). One of more unlucky team of England in 70´s. Good players but lacked some class in decisive moments
