And on his last tour at the Andernos festival, France. With Marcus Miller too. An honor. Somebody once wrote 'Miles changed the world' : He started Walking, the Bop, Ascenseur à l'échafaud, Bitches Brew, On the corner, Time after time.. Effectively.

The moment on 1:05:39 when Miles asks for Thorntons squeaky percussion instrument is such a subtle and wholesome moment. Instant Connection and Recognizability. Just raw energy improvised in the present moment. Souls screamming in human flesh

i say at this stage that Miles was allowing others shine and was able to be modest enough to say this was their time and he was able to promote others and not so much himself. I say Bravo and He will be remembered for a very long time!

I say that he always allowed others to shine. Watch any live show going as far back as recorded history offers, and you'll notice he even exits the stage to allow his saxophonists or woodwind players to get busy without having to stand in his shadow. He helped create future leaders out of his band members. History shows this.

Yes, this is quite visible too in the fabulous "Miles in Paris" show from November 1989, four years later. He was growing older and a bit frail, still as sharp as ever when he was playing or cueing the others though....In Paris, Kenny Garrett and Foley McCreary take the lead on many glorious, soulful solos and duets with Miles, but it's clear that the Patriarch is also giving the others in the band room to shine!

I remember me seeing the same concert at the TV years later wondering "this was really the same concert I escaped of?"... I rerally coulden't even recognize the music... it was my only opportunity to see Miles... trust me: I still regret I didn't stay

41:00 min in and Scofield is on fire -raises the band. Basically Bobby had been benched until then and he comes out flying as well. At about 59:00 listen to the authority in his solo. Unfortunately he disappears again.... did Miles sent him off? What I noticed in '85 was that the band seemed to be going nowhere in particular and then all of a sudden they shifted two or three gears up (1:28:19) -that was Miles directing this band. Look at how yawns at Steve around 1:04:00 how he surprises John with Backseat Betty at around 1:56:00 I agree that the next drummer "sugarfoot" tightened the band, but on revisiting this concert somehow it really is fascinating to watch and hear Miles constantly searching to express what he feels and how he wants the band to sound. Look at 2:04:00 -they look embarrassed, specially Bobby Berg, not really like a unit. And yet, North Sea Jazz never had better starts then when Miles kicked it off: you knew you were in the presence of genius. Obviously some think his peak was long before this, but if you listen to his bands in the next couple of years, something remarkable happens. The guy who offers him the drawings doesn't really notice Miles offering his hand or him asking his minders for money to pay him. Funny how the little girl just tramples over the drawings while Bobby Berg plays his heart out with John Scofield.

@@davidseriff711 In the last couple of days I listened consecutively to this concert and the following ones in Montreux from '85. It's amazing how more tight and fluid this band sounds in Switzerland. '86 was a transition for the band - I was surprised that "sugarfoot" wasn't yet on drums. My impression is that the moment he takes up the drums the band transformed - Robben is an amazing guitarplayer; but he didnt stay that long.
