Earth is almost flooded in Stage 1; its oceans and caves have been colonized by aliens in Stage 2; Jupiter was turned into a star in Stage 3; and Neptune had been blown into pieces in Stage 4. How depressing.

Little known fact: Pulstar and Blazing Star were created by ex-IREM employees (it was confirmed) that we’re the maker of the original R-Type trilogy, so this is technically R-Type 4, just changed to not actually be R-Type since IREM still had/has the copyright on it. Blazing Star of course would be the 2D R-Type Delta considering the amount of ship options in Blazing Star itself plus the extra 3 ships in the R-9A Arrowhead, the R-9C Warhead, and the R-9ø Ragnarok.

For all those who say this game is an R-Type clone: The rumor is that after several employees who worked on this game left Irem, they worked on this one. So, there is going to be some similarities. I suppose this game could be considered an unofficial R-Type spinoff.

Pulstar & blazing star are extraordinary games!!!!!

Wow after 23 yrs i finally found the game i used to play as a kid in El Salvador , my family moved to the US, in 1995 i was 11 yrs old , after several years i tried to find the game but i didnt remember the name of the game and internet wasnt available for me at that time so no luck lol to make the story short i continued looking and once again no luck 🙄so today april 11th 2019 i decided to google arcade games from the 90's lol and i went thought a ton and BINGO ! Took me literally 24 yrs 😱but i got it ! Thank you very much to to person that took his time to upload this vid 👍👍

One of my absolute favorites shmups on the old Neo Geo, along with Blazing Star. Two games that absolutely pushed you to learn them, so that you could improve and beat them, which I've never done to this day.

Pulstar actually was the biggest side-scrolling shooter in its day clocked at 305 megs for the Neo * Geo. 6:06 p.m.

Pulstar was so awesome. I too I remember reading in Die Hard GameFan and other places that Pulstar was going to be R-Type 4. The sequel, Blazing Star, was also developed by Aicom but under a different name, Yumekobo. Although the gameplay was much faster paced than R-Type and Pulstar. Interestingly, Blazing Star's development name was "Pulstar Blast". Also, for those that haven't played it or heard of if, LAST RESORT on Neo Geo has a lot of graphical similarities to R-Type II. I wouldn't be surprised at all if some of the Irem staff that worked on R-Type II also worked on Last Resort at SNK.

One of the very few games with CGI rendered graphics (although there's still more than enough hand-drawn spritework in the game), that actually looked (and still look) GOOD.

It looks super easy when someone else is playing, right?! Until you pop in a quarter and 45 seconds later, you get a game over screen. This is one of the hardest shooters I've ever played. And ive played Gofer No Yabou on the X68000. Fantastic game though. The way it looks and sounds, ill never get over it. Top tier stuff right here.

My fave shmup of all time. It's plainly an R-Type clone but it's full of imagination. Reminds me if Alien Soldier was made into a shmup.

What I meant is, that certain graphics that LOOK deadly aren't. Examples include the debris that the second boss throws around, and the fire prominances in the third level.

AKA Grazing. Hitbox = smaller than ship, so you can have bullets going through the wings without dying horribly.

Hmmm.. was never that enamored with Pulstar. The graphics were just too garish and cheesy compared to the original R-Type 8 years prior - they looked like a Mega Drive shooter on steroids. Last Resort was cool and atmopsheric but also fell well short of the first two RT coin-ops.

I remember playing this in arcades and being insanely hard. Only got through first couple of levels. Looks so easy on the video.

I meant to rate this comment down, In this game, certain graphics would make the game almost unwinnable. Thus, your ship "phases through" those items that appear after bosses or as part of fancy graphics. Trust me, I beat this game before. Also, the Eternal Centipede(fourth boss) is in the background, and does not hit you until it goes into the foreground.

The T weapon, the R weapon , the ring weapon, the fact you cannot launch your force, bosses have very little relation to real R-Type bosses(except for the Gomander-like stage 6 boss) the missile type is different... Tell me, have you ever actually played this game? The bullet patterns and music is very different, many of the enemies(though not all) are not at all based on R-Type, and it was worked on by ex-Irem people.
