I believe it’s to check for Hydrolock on radial engines. If it stops turning manually then I believe the Spark Plugs must be taken out from the bottom or lower cylinders so oil can be drained off. I was told this story early on in my naval aviation career by an old Navy Chief. He was an encyclopedia of military aviation history. Especially Naval aviation history. Thanks for sharing! ✌🏽🇺🇸🙏

Think I've heard hydrolock but also pre oiling bearings to prevent startup wear and tear

It serves several functions simultaneously. Checking for hydrolock is one. Distribution of lubrication and clocking the engine to an optimal position for starting are others.

I've alway known that they'd spin the props before starting for oil distribution (dad was a Navy mechanic 44-45) but l just recently discovered the Kaufman starter

Coffman starters are cool, I love how simple they are. Plus, feels like the most American way to start an engine, just use gunpowder!

They rotate the engine to the start position, tdc almost!!! Dont want the shotgun gases to escape down the exhaust valve and not pust the piston down... Thats a guess being a machanic, the guy in comments has a point also to make sure its not hydro locked.

The gasses from the shell don’t end up in the cylinders (I thought so too before researching it!) The gasses push another piston that engages a gear, that kicks over the engine. Something like that! Cheers!

@@worldofwarbirds thanks for expanding on that, i had thought that, you would have engine piston compression up to that valve where the cartage goes, a valve would have be used i suppose, ive seen the same thing with old tractors, its fantastic 👍

I erroneously said that it was mainly for American and radial aircraft, but at least some Spitfires had them too as well as Typhoons, Tempests and later jets.
