Some cocktails and spirits just get a bad rep, and we're here to change that! After today, we promise you won't look at these the same way. And thank you to Geologie, head to geolog.ie/BARFLY70 or scan the QR code on the screen and use code BARFLY70 and they will give you an exclusive 70% off of their award-winning skincare trial set. On top of that, they are giving you an exclusive bonus offer up to 50% off on additional skin, hair, and body products of your choice when you add it to your trial.
Today I thought it would be fun to focus on cocktails which I believe to be severely underrated. One of the many lessons I’ve learned over the years, and somewhat disappointingly, that which becomes popular on the internet isn’t always very good and that which is very good Is VERY VERY often ignored by the internet. So today let’s look at some very overlooked cocktails featuring an often overlooked spirit and see if we can’t give these drinks and this spirit their just desserts.
Recipe at the bottom. And for even more recipes and articles visit our website www.theeducatedbarfly.com

For anyone who likes the Army & Navy, I'd also highly recommend the similiar Hotel Georgia cocktail from here in Vancouver! 2 oz gin, 1 oz lemon juice, 1/2 oz orgeat, 8 drops orange blossom water (I usually sub this out for 2 dashes orange bitters) and egg white. Very refreshing and sour, the egg white is a great addition and some variations call for grated nutmeg on top which is great too

Leandro I would very happily make and enjoy all of these cocktails! Thank you for making me aware of a couple that I have never had! I have never had an Army and Navy and I don't know why I haven't! The same goes for the Saturn! I do like dry bitter cocktails but this one looks like I would enjoy it! I am so excited to make The Self Starter!! I know I will love it!! I adore gin as a spirit and these cocktails all sound fabulous! Exciting! You rock!! Have a wonderful day! Cheers! 🙂

One thing I love about cocktails is that I have been swapping out ingredients for a while, and never knew what the new creation was called. There was a time when I was so lazy to make simple syrup, but had plenty of orgeat in hand, that I just started subbing it into any sour I made - today I learned that the gin version is called the Army&Navy. The more you know, I guess.I really appreciate this channel also giving some new recipes for me almost every time!

After watching this video, I made the Self Starter, and I agree that it's a very nice drink. My new favorite cocktail has recently been a 2:1 Martini made with Lillet Blanc instead of vermouth. In that drink, I find that a less juniper forward gin (I've settled on Aviation) works best. But for this drink, I followed the recipe and used a London dry gin, and that was the right move. You need a London dry gin to stand up to the apricot liqueur and absinthe in this drink. Thanks for this. As for whether the self starter is a before- or after-dinner drink, I think it's an after-dinner drink, because it's noticeably sweet.

Great video and tempting cocktails! Will try! Regarding citrus, have you had any experience with limes or lemons sprayed with the Apeel (tm) coating? It is a synthetic attempt to extend the shelf life of some produce and cannot be washed off. It is designed to be permanent. Regardless of the health concerns I’m curious if the peeling will express oils in a natural way. Is it safe for flaming? Just now hitting the major markets I’m curious if consumers will see a difference in the performance of their fruit? Citrus is more than just what’s inside it. Food for thought 😊

I love gin in cocktails…but don’t use it often…my go-to spirit is rum. That being said, I make a gin cocktail with 2 oz of a good gin, 2 oz of pineapple juice, 1 oz of fresh lime juice, 1/2 oz of grenadine, shake with ice for 10-15 seconds and strain into your choice of glassware (that holds 6-8 oz-small coupe and martini glasses are a bit too small for this cocktail).

Harry Craddock would have been using the original Lillet Blanc in the Self Starter, which had quinine in it. Cocchi Americano would be a closer approximation (unless you were going to do a quinine tincture to add to your Lillet).
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly Жыл бұрын
I know a lot of people say this. I’ve heard it a lot over the years but my question is that if the old Lillet was discontinued then how would anyone know if Cocchi Americano is a closer approximation??? Wouldn’t you have had to try both to make a statement like that or is everyone just imagining that’s the truth based on how they both taste today?
@jonathanthomas8736
@jonathanthomas8736 Жыл бұрын
@TheEducatedBarfly fair question. Because the formula changed in 1982, and there are living people who've had both, most of whom agree Cocchi is the replacement.
