The diesel was getting harder to start, usually starts within 1 second. (you can hear that at the end of the video after the repairs).
What a pain to get the starter removed from the engine and later re attach.
The brushes had worn that far that the lead in wires had banked out to the brush holders.
Hence contact pressure was reduced and resistance increased and starting power lost.
Replacing all 4 brushes and cleaning everything up made the starter back to new condition.
Often you hear, why not fit a new starter. Quality is worse, especially from the Chines made clones.
Item doesn't fit, gears not aligning etc. Recondition is cheaper and the device will fit.

My dad raised me fixing our own cars and electronics. He owns so many tools lol But it's situations like putting that starter back in that make me say it's worth paying someone with the proper work area top fix stuff. Though there is satisfaction in doing a job like this.... 😛

Had an old Toyota 4x4 had to use an 18" extension swivel socket 4" extension another swivel socket & had to tape the bolt onto the end of the socket just to get it back into place, what a pain in the a$$ some of these starters can be, I feel your pain brother. Thanks for taking the time to show us. God Bless.

1.2 I4 petrol. 18 years and 73k and my Valeo D6RA started sounding like a bunch of thin metal rods dropping on the floor all at once. All of a sudden one cold morning (didn't disassemble that one, but i suppose the magnet could no longer hold the pinion in place steadily). Immediately fitted a recon one, same tooth count, and aside from that rods noise totally vanishing away, i immediately noticed it's turning the engine so much faster than the old one. Like lightspeed. I'd say definitely go recon from a trusted company if the OEM no longer makes it/car make is now listing a starter from a different brand with a different tooth count. Should be a maintenance item.

Love those old nissan diesel engines. I noticed your oil sump gasket may be leaking and your exhaust pipe has a small rattle. But a excellent video otherwise, keep up the good work.

That rattle sound has been in the muffler for about 15 years. still not leaking so compliant.

Couldn't they make it any harder to service a starter than this?? I can hear your frustration with it. But, nice job in the end! Too bad it's almost 2020 and we are still using brush motors everywhere.

Imagine the wear and tear on these new cars with auto start features. You will have lots of issues after 3 or 4 years.

@@RODALCO2007 pretty much what I thought with our latest car, a Ford Focus... I dont believe it saves that much fuel, and must increase wear on the battery and starter motor a hell of a lot!

Hello Mr.Rodalco. happy holidays! I am a fan of vintage machinery and electronics I like watching your videos. I came across your phase converter video from 2010, and I am in the process of making a rotary phase converter for my lathe it has a 3kw motor. I am searching for a 7.5kw-10kw motor for the rotary converter, but I am confused most of the big motor nameplates say delta and star 400/660, or only delta 380v or higher, should I look hard for a motor rated delta star 220/380v? I have all of the contactors and capacitors on hand I only have to sourse the big mother motor, but a don't want to buy the wrong motor. Thanks

Just did this job on my old Plymouth. Had an easier time that you did getting it out and back in. Seems like starters and water pumps are often difficult.

Hello sir, got a question, I've had the brushes replaced on my starter off of my 2005 jeep liberty, last time was in may and did it again just a couple of days ago and I notice it's going bad again, what causes these brushes to wear off and do you recommend me just getting a whole new starter rather than just replacing the brushes again, like I said I just replaced them a couple a days ago so I don't know what's causing this malfunction!! Thank you in advance, watching from Reynosa Tamaulipas Mexico

What condition is the commutator in ? Have the correct brushes been fitted ? Also does it take a long time cranking before the car starts. That could be excessive wear. Normally brushes should last at least 5 to 10 years. These brushes in this starter were replaced in 2009, and lasted 11 years in a diesel car which is started very often.

Make sure you’re getting the correct and quality version of the brushes for your starter motor. Don’t trust generic stuff online. Good luck!

Quick look on amazon and starters are cheap if you know what to get.. count the teeth on the bendix gear and check mounting points but looks like you could just get any ole starter thats around same size and gut the new one and swap for around 30$.. 60 on the high side of em.. just a thought.. your like me though, refuses to buy new shit when you know you can get it going yourself.. even though you got a hundred other projects planned and in progress... ha! Happy holidays to ya though..

I don't like these aftermath starters. Often less quality and often don't fit. As you can't always trust the pictures they put up.
