Dave Thornton actually knows - I must be somewhere around his vintage, as I experienced all those ''formative'' (and, I say, Character-Building) Grand Final losses. 1992 was the one that scarred me, but 2008 was horrible too. 94 + 95 back-to-back where just bleak. Younger fans would likely see Geelong as a perennial powerhouse; the truth is Geelong went through 44 years in the wilderness, and have experienced more Grand Final heartache than any other team bar Collingwood over the past 40+ years. It's been a wild ride for their fans.

I remember those losses as well. For that reason I can’t hate Geelong. Even though you beat my Bulldogs every single damn time we play. I can’t get over the pity I felt for you in the early 90s.

Interesting choices on this list. I'm very surprised you considered a couple of these close losses ahead of the 102-point thrashing from Collingwood in Round 8 2006 and the 86-point demolition also from Collingwood in Round 9 2008.

Thumpings you get a lot of time to get used to the idea. Close ones are like being stabbed.

Round 1 2020, lost to the Giants and had to stare at Geelong sitting 14th for a good 3-months in lockdown

Losing to Hawks on Easter 2022 must be pretty bad too.

But all he would do is talk about how they won the flag that year
