hehe I get it. I works well in fresh water tanks too. Algae grows my shrimp population devours it hardly any nitrates very little phosphates Java ferns thriving too. Tank is like 15 years old now I do a water ~5G of 35G change when I run out of plant food hehe plants love it ! I store about 3g of the tank change water in one of those big 5g Poland springs water cooler jugs. The rest in a 5g bucket to rinse the media then either feed house plants or outside plants.

Thanks for the tip on incorporating a refugium. I’ve been battling green hair algae and my tank once looked as bad as this one. I manually remove as much as I can but it’s been a battle! I’ll try doing this!

Mine was identical and I used lanthanum chloride to remove it but you have to make sure the fish don’t get breathing problems and remove the precipitate with a filter sock. There’s drip methods available online if you want to give it a shot. It’s super cheap, too. Good luck.

My tank about 7 months in and cannot grow cheato but but dragons breath does grow. I use a 100 watt grow light with red and blue LEDS from Amazon so that might be why not growing cheato. Thanks for showing us this, that tank was a mess!

I absolutely agree that a refugium is probably the best thing to add to any reef tank. And algae scrubbers are great too but if you don’t have room for a refugium or scrubber an algae reactor is also a tremendous addition. Basically anything that adds a place to grow algae other than the display, lol

My first tank ended up like this. I run a refugium these days for obvious reasons. This tank will end up clean with no hair algae. This is a natural export method that will prevail. Nutrient export is a common issue among new reefers and your video is a fantastic resource. Thanks for another great video. This is the REBOOT!

On a refugium does it have to have a light on 24/7?

I run an algea reactor and a uv steralizer...and if needed always some biopellets on standby. But got to be very careful with biopellets... will strip all nutrients to fast.

For some reason i never thought of suctioning out the gha like that. I have the exact similar case to you. I was fighting dinos and then rammed up my feeding and nutrients to kill them. Months later i now have GHA. (A better nuisance to have but still ugly). Snails and urchins arent making a dent. Will try this soon.

I tried a refugium and the problem was it sucked the display dry of nutrients. That eventually led to dinoflagellates. I ended up removing the refugium as it was too effective. I used Chaeto and had two different species of pods in there.
@drewt13 жыл бұрын
What siphon do you use?
@OnTheReef4 жыл бұрын
A fuge is not a cure-all. You still have to watch your nutrient import (don't over feed and do regular maintenance). A refugium is definitely worth the investment though. Watching all that GHA being sucked up was very satisfying! Now you need to use a turkey baster or a powerhead to blow off those rocks.
@ArrickthaRed4 жыл бұрын
Watching you siphon the tank it did not look like there was much of a cleanup crew. It would not help turn this tank around at this point but once the algae is under control it may help keep it that way.

The problem is...most plant refugiums grow far too little plants to make a difference. To see real scrubbing and water polishing..you need like a 55 gallon packed with caulerpa to help the bio filter on a 100 gallon. Plus,that 55 gallon needs quality lighting just like it was a Amano plant tank. But,people would be surprised at how well plants do water cleaning...even helps stop tinted water..like a green living protein skimmer. They don't replace anything..media,protein skimmer,water changes...they just really raise the water quality,polish it. No pollution if you overfeed and no fishy smells emanating from the tank.

4ml to the gallon 3% hydrogen proxide and a nice ball of cheato 4 days after the fact with a 50w light get this back in order run refugium light 24/7 til HA is gone then drop it to 18hr on 6 off . i just went thru this. Also turn the skimmer up to wet skim and do 50% WC after 2wks of being algea free
@Reefahholic4 жыл бұрын
Strong work! Just remember that PO4 reading isn't gonna be accurate with all that algae. It's much higher than 0.06 ppm. Keeping that in mind will help you better make future decisions.
@eatsleepreef95654 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I’m doubling down on the gfo to help focus on this specific parameter :)
@Reefahholic4 жыл бұрын
@EAT SLEEP Reef I messed up a few years ago when I had a bad bout of GHA. My PO4 was reading 0.01 and then 0.00 the next day. I freaked out and dosed the tank with Na3PO4 which kept making things worse. Now I look at the color of the corals when I get low readings and these algae in the tank or fuge. Vibrant will make quick work of that. I’d pick up a bottle. After you get the majority sucked out...dose their recommended dose. Then wait 2 weeks and dose again every week. It takes a little time, but don’t rush it. Just keep siphoning the algae as it dies so Cyano doesn’t get fueled as a side affect from all that dead algae. It can release a lot of junk back into the water column so exporting as it’s dying is key. I’d run some carbon on that system too.
@eatsleepreef95654 жыл бұрын
Ya for sure. I am dosing the continuum product which I have heard from very much trusted sources it is more effective than vibrant. I am on the second week and I can see algae already letting go for sure. But ya I feel this will be a great test to see how much of it we can eradicate as most people would consider this tank a loss. I feel we can get it back.

No cleaning or nothing lights were longer than expected and I got green hair algae all over the tank I almost gave up after having this tank for four years I had to get a toothbrush and scrub every last rock and water changes and then finally it disappeared. Also forgot to mention I lower the light time as well. Only got the blues on the white light.

I heard as long as triggerfish are well fed they might not attack inverts. But I think we should get rid of the triggerfish if it starts killing the snails. Right now we have a blue tang, yellow tang, 2 damselfish and 2 clown fish and a small file fish. Would removing the triggerfish cause any fighting in the tank?
