It's hard to make a bicycle so bad I call it the WORST E-BIKE on the Market, but the Segway C80 eMoped/eBike has impressed me in all the wrong ways!
From a glitchy App that frequently locks me out of the bike to the paltry 7mph top speed up hills, the heavy 120+ lbs, and the useless pedals, this bike has it all. Meaning, All of what NOT to do and call a bike an eBike!
Check it out and comment below with your thoughts. Did I get it right or was I too rough on the bike? Let me hear your thoughts. Also, don't forget to give this video a thumbs up and hit that subscribe button and notification bell if you haven't already!

They're definitely building it to a specific set of regulations, whatever municipality that may be. They want it as close to moped as possible while legally being a bike.

That’s what I thought, In the UK electric scooters are not road legal unless registered and insured (good luck with that). Having pedals makes it technically a bicycle although it would be still illegal to ride under its own power on a public road.

The pedals are there JUST to make it legally a bicycle, guarantee it. Xtreme built some e-mopeds with the same idea way back in the day (just way cheaper). And whoo boy did they get pulled over a lot. Don't like the tail light being that far back. Don't like the lack of turn signals either, since if you're going to go *this* fancy you might as well have them, too.

Apple business practices aside, and pricing aside, I am willing to bet (based on my personal experience with apple phones, tablets, and computers over a span of about 15 years) that it would just work. It would be limited, probably have app integration that only works with iOS and OSX, and come with a "key" that requires it to be paired to an iPhone, but it would probably be pretty decent otherwise.

Glad for the review. Not that I personally would ever buy one know enough about it to never supported it to others. I own an old "Sunbird" branded Chinese scooter that it too was quite the letdown to those who purchased one back in the early 2000. The original owner was a pilot that was considering the e-bike industry. He didn't even have 30 miles on the bike when he road it across wet pavement. Didn't make it 50ft from the hanger to get to his car when it shut off abruptly. Blew the fuse on the first battery pack. He switched it to the second pack and nothing. He pushed it back to the hanger and picked up his 24v push scooter to return to his vehicle. He got his money back but not the shipping. They told him to send it back at his own expense or just keep it. It stayed in the hanger for 15 years before he left it when he quit renting the space. Research on the bike hand nothing but the same bad reviews. 90% having the same wet pavement/weather related issues at the time of failure. The rest were just hate reviews on its performance. If it can't ride it in the rain it's NOT worth riding. I'd rather build my own and have the same results but know where the failure is to fix it myself. ALL that extra technology makes it a headache for troubleshooting. NO THANKS. I'll spend my money more wisely.

You pay to get the weight down. It takes real engineering and quality craftsmanship to make a bike under 20 pounds that will have long lifetime. I paid $1000 for a manual road bike over a decade ago and the bike still rides great with over 30,000 km on it and minimal maintenance. The dollars per mile on that bike was a huge bargain. Anybidy can take 35 pounds of material and build something really cheap like what you find at Walmart. High end bikes take a lot of manual labor. I suggest you watch some videos on how carbon frames are made to get a better understanding of why they cost so much.
@kyle8952

Economy of scale. More motorcycles are sold than the high end bicycles. Most bicycles that are sold are cheaper models ($200) with low quality parts. The situation is even more exaggerated in the 3rd world where a typical bicycle is $50 and still has rod brakes, but the whole city is full of scooters.

This makes me miss my 2014 Gio Italia -- a very similar bike/moped hybrid. I rode it for five years or so, but I live on an island (one with crazy hills, so I'm with you on the limited draw) where I was pretty sure I wouldn't get in trouble for the fact that the pedals were under the tail light. I always said yes, it has pedals, but you have to go to clown school to learn how to pedal it. I'd never have dreamed of taking on the busy streets you ride on in the video! I enjoyed it a great deal though, and used it as my primary form of on-island transportation. Another issue with these is maintenance. If you need to change the rear tyre, you're going to have to do the wheel removal and installation yourself, and it's not easy. Plus, getting the removed rear wheel to a garage to have the tyre swapped out is a challenge unto itself -- it is HEAVY due to the motor. And then you get to the matter that about half the cost of the scooter is the battery, so after 4-5 years, you face the choice of buying a whole shiny new bike or keeping an ageing one going by spending another $800-900. I chose the former.

I’ve considered this so many times as a form of e-transportation to jump into. I was considering an e-scooter but I kind of wanted something more sturdy and better range. My town isn’t super hilly either so it’s perfect. Honestly though the only thing holding me back is the fact I know my cities police would 100% pull me over on it and consider it a moped and attempt to make me register it.

The negative thing about e mopeds is that in most states they are legally treated as cars, so that means you HAVE to ride in the same stroad where the speed limit is 45, you have to register it and insure it, and probably pay for parking To avoid all of that I recommend you to get an e-scooter with a seat, the closest thing to an e-moped without having to deal with the legal BS

I switched to a duel shock 150cc scooter that cost 1200 with shipping. I get way more range, speed and fueling up is a couple of dollars a week that takes 2 minutes to fill. Although beautiful I feel this e-moped is over priced riding on the Segway name. I think it's way too small, someone could pick it up and stick it in a van. It does have many features that would be nice to see standard.

I have just purchased this C80 over 2 weeks ago from Costco here in Canada and here are my 2 cents and why I disagree with a lot of the point in the video 1. The price I got was just a bit under $1700 CAD including tax, thats about $1350 USD. And for the price for this ranged of electric moped its a great deal 2. The pedals are CLEARLY there to just bypass North American laws, no one buying this moped would be peddling this thing, I mean come on, does it even look like a bicycle? 🤣 3. The speed, now here are things that get interesting. There is a simple soft lock to unlock the full potential of the moped. I'm 215 lbs with my backpack and I easily get over 50KM/H (31MPH) on flat grounds and about 20KM/H on a 15-20degree hill. Downhills I can get as fast as 60KM/H. It's a simple unlock and all you need is just an android phone, if you need help let me know. 4. The range with the unlocked speed is about 500meters for every 1% of battery, so you're looking at about 50KM (31miles) range for someone of my weight. 5. The GPS and map problem I also got, but tech support was helpful and all they told me is to unbind the moped from your account, shut off, disconnect battery for 30 seconds and pair it again like a new bike. Viola it has worked without a problem since! 6. Tech support is not as bad as I thought, I opened a ticket about the charging brick was pretty hot during charging and afterwards they followed up 3 times with me without me getting back to them. So far the ONLY things that I'm worried about the bike are 1. Battery life and replacements. I think Segway don't sell battery and not sure how you can replace the battery after a x amount of years 2. Puncture in the tires, since this thing is so new, lot of places don't know how to fix this like a normal bike tire.
@KevCentral
@KevCentral 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience. Three follow questions: 1- How did you remove the “soft lock?” 2- I still have open tickets from last year that support has never followed up on 3- Don’t count on much in the way of replacement parts from Segway

My Segway Ninebot MAX 🛴has 20% slope hill climbing capability (I’ve tested it & it climbs so easy). The C80, on the other hand only can do 12%….that’s where it fails….but my other electric ⚡️ mopeds 🛵 are horrible at hill climbing also. Also that 750W motor is inaccurate, it’s 600W. Segway claims the “peak power” is 750W. I just realized that you’re HondaProKev 🏍️ lol (I recognized your voice). 🤙🏾 🙋🏽‍♂️

Interesting fact : (disclaimer I’m not a traffic lawyer) in ca you can legally ride an e scooter with a seat and NO pedals with a drivers license or permit if it is under a certain power level. Which means here the pedals on this thing would be obsolete. Why on earth you would buy one is another matter. I own a Segway-Ninebot ninebot maxg30 Scooter and it’s garbage at getting anywhere further than a few miles due to the massive embarrassment of riding it. 😂

I have 2 of these with less then 10 miles on them. The first one the charger died. Got a replacement in about 2 months. Second one battery died shortly after the first ones charger died. Been trying to get responses and support help from Segway since Oct. 2021. Nothing. So one machine still under warranty is totally useless with no help coming anytime soon. I would use caution with buying these. I should have stuck with my original plan and both a branded ebike.

I had mine for about 6 months. Don't have a problem with the app but uphill and power need a boost mod that's about $400.00 u.s. I use the pedals for uphill with the trodel on. But the rain part I had to purchase a rain coat for the bike/mopped that is shipped from China along with other parts. There kind of pricey.

It’s a real shame but this isn’t the only foreign designed vehicle that has issues here. I bought my wife a Honda ADV150 scooter for her to learn how to ride. I rode it a few times before we sold it, as she decided she did not want to be a scooter/motorcycle rider. It was speed limited to 65mph, which sounds ok, until you get to a steep hill. Needless to say, 40-45mph at the top was not out of the question. More of these companies need to research the US market better if they’re going to sell here, as Americans are interested in buying the items, but are often disappointed by the performance of them.

I bought mine for 1600'ish at Bestbuy. It's so close to being such a good ebike/emoped! Frustrating. On the flats it's sufficient, a great ride.. but barely fast enough.. a top speed of 25-30mph would be fantastic, as well as a bit more power for hills. It's just so frustrating at times. If they'd just release an update patch to unlock/add 25 percent performance it would be such a good bike even at the cost of some range.

They limited the speed because the max speed for class 2 ebike is 20mph. Beyond that, it is a moped. C80 has pedals and max speed below 20mpg, so legally it is a class 2 ebike, which is allowed on bike lanes and you cannot share lanes with cars even if you want to, just like when you ride a bicycle.

Seems pretty similar to like the super 73 where the pedals only exist for legal reasons. Totally not worth the price especially if youd have to get a tag and insurance you might as well just buy a honda navi Although I do wonder if it's like a surron/segwayx260 where you can cut a wire and get way more power out of it

The pedals are probably there for it to be called an ebike and not require a license and insurance. Many jurisdictions might require than anyway as a lot of places only allow pedal assistt and not throttle based systems.

@@KevCentral it would probably be considered legal in many places, but the rule vary even within cities. I looked up the rules for Ontario Canada, and throttle bikes are allowed (I initially thought they weren't) but Toronto, our biggest city, only allows throttle bikes on roads and bike lanes but aren't allowed on the dedicated cycle tracks or the multi use pathways (shared with pedestrians). I think thye are going to start restricting e bikes more especially the heavier weight ones or ones with more power. Max power output allowed here is 500 watts.

Many thanks for the in-depth review however you lost me with PETAL ASSIST. It's not a flower for a honey bee. I've had the Evader ebike and it has PEDALS at the rear, just like the Segway C80 and it is very awkward to use but I think it's just there because of the law regarding licensing and insurance. It does work but because the Evader MX3 has 6 batteries, it makes it hard to control and pedal. The Evader was limited to 18mph but when that broke I was hitting 32mph. My PEDAL ASSIST e bicycle (owned 2), was hitting 26mph without me even using the pedals.

Neat looking scooter/moped, too bad they dropped the ball with power….I should say they dropped the ball with the software. We know that the motor has plenty of power and the battery and voltage are optimal…they just need to let the end user dial in the settings like speed limiter and what each level of power assist gives power wise. Good job on the video Kevin

My girlfriend bought me a citizen Tokyo folding bike for xmas. I put a bafang bbshd 1000w mid drive on it and bought a 48vx50ah battery from aliexpress. The bike is almost comical with the 16 inch wheels and folds into a suitcase. It weighs less than her lectric xp with the battery. It will max out at about 40 mph and has a 90+ mile range on thumb throttle only and unknown range on pedal assist. The only upgrades I've done besides the emotor is magura hydraulic rim brakes and made a 4 wheel trailer to pull my two dogs at 200+ lbs. It'll do 75 miles on pedal assist pulling my dogs. And the bike is a wheelie machine in the higher settings

There's a 65 mile trail by my house that can be made into a 200+ mile loop and I've done the loop on that citizen Tokyo thanks to a hotel. I did hit a deep pothole in the rain one night last summer at about 35 mph and was knocked unconscious and awoke with 4 broken ribs, a broken hand and eye socket. But was out riding again about a week later. Oh yeah, I also hit something at 3 am at top speed and taco'd both rims, and had to stash the bike in the woods and walk home 9 miles to get the car. But citizen sent me two new wheels

its a product meant for china that is being brought overseas. the pedals are there for legal reasons, or else the driver would need a motorcycle license to take it on the streets. In shanghai, its actually one of the fastest legal ebikes you can buy right now. top speed was around 55km/h (after a software unlock), although ninebot have lowered it via OTA recently due to some incidents where the wires were melted through. its sibling product (b110p) is actually marketed as a water-resistant ebike, with a battery that they claim can be charged underwater. not so sure about the c80 though. PS. there's actually an app that you can download to unlock the speed. you just connect it via bluetooth to your phone, and the app unlocks the ebike's speed with a tap of the button. im not sure if this would work on the international variant. PPS. i can almost guarantee the that app issues are due to the data center being in china (the great firewall) PPPS. its sold for around 900 USD in china (regular price)
