This week I'm on the Llyn peninsula here in Wales doing some landscape photography with my newest camera... Terrible landscape photography admittedly, but I try... I'm not much of a film photographer, but there's something about the Instax that I do really love...

If you read the instructions, you'll fin that shaking the photo is discouraged as it can damage the image - possibly giving rise to strange blue lines at the top 😉

Eh, sometimes you get blue lines no matter what in my experience. Kind of just the “charm” I suppose.

It's not stabilised. If you shake the photo it gets a blurred image 😉 Having taken about a million high speed Polaroids in the lab, streaks, strange lines and general gunge are part of the process.

There's often too much 'digital' these days. These cameras create nice snapshots of a time and place that you can send to friends and family. The imperfections give an added charm, often lost when taking photos digitally. Good video, James!

Can send? Like in the post? Still, if you do, only one of them, since it's hard to make copies. Digital or even negative film makes sending copies easier.

I was unsure about this video just from the title. For a moment I wondered if it would be a complete waste of time. James never disappoints - the whole thing was interesting and enjoyable. From the shortcomings of the camera to the pub on the beach it held my interest. A quaint location with a lot of lovely photo opportunities. I would have shot the buoy in landscape with a wide lens including the left end of the left building out to the water on the right. Completely different than what James did…thinking about my own response was real engagement with the content. For me the video framing and clarity were 2 orders of magnitude better than the instant photos and made this almost a travelogue. Too bad we didn’t get to see the pub. James, stick to family snaps with that toy - it seems to be great at that. And go back to this beach with your serious gear. Cheers!

I always find your videos entertaining. This was an interesting challenge. Some of us are old enough to have spent more years shooting film than digital. I always have my instax wide in my camera bag, bigger pictures, more controls (exposure compensation for example), lots of fun, and a macro lens to put on, I have a lot of fun documenting my travels or my walks (10 shots to describe them). This is great, I started photography with instax and old polaroids, of course, they can't compete with digital cameras but you can still achieve really nice results. I use to take a picture of the shot with my phone (a frame in the frame to put on instagram), it works really well too.

With our complex interchangeable lens systems, it can be a lot of fun to go out and play with a really simple camera and challenge ourselves with them. I have a Nikon Coolpix S8100 pocket camera that is a really simple to use automatic camera. It was one of two pocket cameras I used to carry around back before phones had decent cameras. I still enjoy taking it out once in a while to mess around with and see if I can trick it's auto programming into doing what I want.

Just a few things. I remember the video "Why I'll never shoot film", and you saying the film photographers use Portra 400 and think they are making art but all they are doing is just pointing a camera at things.... Anyway, don't shake your instant pictures - it's a common misconception, it has no effect except to possibly make them worse. After taking a shot, put it in your pocket or other dark place and until it fully develops. You will get richer tones, better contrast and a longer-lasting picture.

I have the SQ6, the Wide and have used a mini in the past. For control the SQ6 has the most of the 3. The Wide does have options to lighten and darken but you cant turn off the flash. The Wide is my favorite for the size of the print and it seems sharper as well. It would be nice if they came out with a low iso option film. 400 is fairly high.

Hi James, hope all is well with you and your family. The instax is a fun camera, and depending on the model you acquire it has some of those features you are asking, mine has all that you were refering. But regarding the video, I loved it... Why... Because I do this quite often. I load up a cartridge in my instax and just go, or I load up the camera give it to my 6y old daughter when we are going for a walk, she also loves it. There is even a monochrome film for straight up shooting BW. Also the instax printers are cool also, with a newer Fuji camera you can pair it and print the pics out of the camera. But for the printers I would only use the Basic color film, even for a BW print, its cheaper than the other films instax have. Somehow I feel a fairly basic quality photo album is nostalgic and beautiful in a photo world so uptaken with high resolution and top notch quality. I wish you all the best and thank you for your video.

Hi James, I'm curious would you ever consider doing a bit more with your website. It's lovely and it allows your designs to be a bit more of a focal point but it also feels lacking and though it could use a bit more of a personal touch of yours. Just my 2 cents but a header and maybe a video on loop at the top of some of your work would draw a more dynamic feeling from it as we enter a generation of web pages that're increasingly dynamic. Love your work and straight takes on technology.

Hi James, an interesting if slightly bizarre subject this time .. Dunno why, but everyone shakes the picture while it develops on polaroid cameras and alike, maybe its in the hope of making a good photo .. one of life's little mysteries. What was really interesting was observing how you decide on composition, as that's where I learn a lot from you. Thanks for sharing.

I own an instax printer and love it. Just a printer, mind you, not a camera like yours. So, it's less convenient because I have to transfer the photograph from the camera to the phone, before using the app to print it. But, easy enough. Fun at parties. Great when I photograph musicians and can immediately give them a print. I only photograph very small gigs, typically in bars, so these musicians often never even see the photographs people were making of them, much less a printed version. And I love the big smile I always get when I give them one :) Easy way to make their evening better. My way to thank them for the music.

That blue bit at 5:10 looks like vignetting from the polarizing filter. My guess is, you didn't have it properly centered over the lens. Or maybe, as @NeilT suggested, it's from shaking the photo like a Polaroid, which it isn't.

Buoy was this a challenge. I haven't shot film for a long time. I intended to a couple of years ago and life got in the way. I do like the way that these modern instant cameras produce almost exactly the same quality of images of Polaroids and film from donkey's years ago. They offer a great nostalgic quality. I never owned a Polaroid, but we did use a polaroid back on a Mamiya for proofing purposes in the studio where we shot magazine covers. It's Boy, by the way. Also, when you knew it was going to overexpose virtually everything, why didn't you use the NDs? And, AND, why do you think the shutter is so easy to press when every photo cost you a quid? 🙂

My kids bought me an old Poloroid camera. Just getting the exposure correct has been an expensive proposition. So, now I have two. A really old one, one from the ‘70’s and I’m looking for one of those collapsing cameras (SX 70?). I’ve used almost every camera format and type built. Cyanotype? Some are only useful for family snaps. Others, you have to work hard. Nice try! Leica makes a version of the camera, but you probably know that.

Don't shake it. Outkast are not Polaroid reps. You don't shake a self-contained instant picture. It's pointless and on top of that, it can crack the chemistry and make it worse. Just let it develop out of direct sunlight and check it out later. Yes, same applies to Fujifilm Instax EDIT: Only Polaroid Peel-Apart Film you'd gently shake to dry as the surface of the peeled film was actually wet and exposed to the air. But almost everyone has stopped using those since the self-contained film has come out.
