We booked the Duke of York Hotel in Whitby and were incredibly disappointed. The room did not match the description provided on Booking.com; it was not the deluxe room as advertised. Additionally, the photos did not accurately represent the actual room, and we encountered small, unsecured vermin outside the door. Due to these discrepancies, we chose not to stay and requested a refund, which we have yet to receive.

I was always led to believe the Duke is a pub that offers b&b rooms. I've visited this PUB on numerous occasions and highly recommended it for food and drink with very friendly staff.

Quite frankly £300.00 for one night goes to show that " a fool and his money is easily parted"

And to be fair, hardly any public go there. Especially in winter. You're pretty safe in Whitby. No one would bother you down there.

There’s always that one time, not everyone in Whitby is honest and kind and with the marks on the door and door frame it looks like someone had made their way in.

We stayed there about 15 years ago, the beer was good, the meals were great, but there was only a shower in the room (which was in the actual building looking over the harbour), but there was mould in the shower and when we booked in we were directed back to a carpark about 1/2 mile back through the town and nowhere near the Duke of York. The next time we stayed in Whitby, we rented a cottage with private off road parking. Far better, easy stroll into town, no worries.

We went to a campsite in Wales the other day for a look around to see if we like it… The Maitre D reluctantly said we could look around the RHS….but he didn’t want to show us the other side… The right hand side was lovely…but i reckon if we booked he would have put us on the Left Hand Side and he would have kept the other side for VIPs and customers who were strong negotiators …you’ve got to sound these people out….its like when you book a sea side hotel room and you think ooh nice sea view,but you end up with a view of the bins in the rear….nice..but the best rooms are same price..i went to a lovely hotel in York but was then installed in a crap block behind the lovely hotel…it goes on everywhere..buyer beware..

The marketing and the reality at the Duke were definitely lacking ,pity you weren't able to inspect the rooms prior to payment.

Didn’t used to be like that. I’ve stayed in the room shown on the left hand side at the front of the hotel but that was in 2000. It was pretty good then. The price you paid for that!! Jeez. Thanks for the heads up.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

You’d pay a good price if you got that room in the picture…but you were sold a pup…it’s smoke and mirrors… It’s like going into an amusement arcade and seeing iPhones and stuff in the crane grab cabinet ,yes theres the iPhone theres the grab…you wont actually own that prize….but you will lose the money you put in the slot..its just for entertainment..just enjoy losing your money..then go around to the betting shop and put some money on a horse..

I feel so sorry for you all that’s terrible at the Duke of York at Whitby you booked the rooms are so false that’s disgusting I wouldn’t stay there thank you for showing us this

I’ve never eaten in there but always though it was a nice place to have a drink. I wouldn’t want to stay in that room though it just looked a mess on the river side and yes I’m with you on the Seaview comment. It’s not the sea that’s the River Esk.

Whitby is a lovely place to visit and there are lots of great places to stay, unfortunately you had a bad experience which will stay with you forever.Whitby is a busy little town and sadly some people are taking advantage of people like your good self.Most Whitby folk are salt of the earth thank goodness 👍.

Thank you for your comment, you are right Whitby is definitely a lovely place and this has not put me off visiting again, i normally find all people who live in North Yorkshire are so polite and friendly, the manger from the Duke of York is probably not from North Yorkshire hence the reason why people are leaving bad reviews about him, it’s a shame, there are lots of bad reports on the Duke of York from people who have been going there for years and will not be returning due to the terrible changes. But all ended well, we actually stayed at the Angel Hotel which you can see on my KZfaq channel and the staff there couldn’t do enough for you there were amazing, a credit to the Angel Hotel. You can also see that I am not the type of person looking for excuses to make a KZfaq video to pull in lots of views I’m there to tell the truth and have a great time and show other’s the great places we visit. I'm sure you don't pay any attention to the sad cases who jump on here and comment simply to have a knock. Know that people like myself and the fair lady, who visited Whitby from Melbourne, Australia last May, and loved it, appreciate the efforts of yourself, Simon the Whitby Wanderer, The Whitby Photographer etc. for keeping us informed as to what is happening in our favourite pocket of England. We chose to rent an apartment and will probably do the same again, but it's fair to let people know that Whitby has its' accomodation and service issues, no different to any other seaside town in any other part of the world. Fair play and good luck to you.

Very true and hopefully the Duke of York management might see this video and make changes to better themselves and if they would like me to go back and review the changes, I would be happy to do so. Its a pub with rooms not a Hotel. A little research and you would soon see it does not overlook the sea. For someone whosays he has done lots of videos of Whitby, how did you not know where it was ? The low ceiling is obvious if you look at the door in the photo. The pub was run down by the previous owner and bought out by Stonegate who then spent over a million quid on it. It is now a standard chain pub serving Weatherspoons style food. In your defence, the advertising was very misleading and for the room to be in a public space is the last thing anyone would want.

Hi Popeye, Thank you for your message, Whitby is a beautiful place my time there was amazing, lovely friendly people and when things worked out and we booked into another hotel which was also amazing, things settled down and we then could enjoy Whitby and relax. I love Whitby am going on Thursday to a cottage , don’t use one of them places use a cottage, I got some nice food in that duke of York

We stayed a few years ago and it was lovely, I knew it had been taken over, it looks awful now would not stay there again. It has changed for the worse.

Not sure about the rooms but I go therewhen I go to whitby the food is exellent and the staff are all exellent too and I'm not easy to please . Your fault as you didn't do your homework what the hell do you want the ritz . You should have a read on here what everyone else has wrote as yours is the only winge

Sadly so many seaside places have gone the same way , they wont to take money but won't spend a penny on the area . Walton on the naze , clacton jaywick the list is endless. Its making foreign travel more attractive again 👍

It’s been left with the bank to a change back on my card, but this as been about 10 weeks now 😡hence the reason why I’ve released this video 👍I don’t like putting bad reviews on KZfaq but when something not right others need to know.
