The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is Trail Rated®, so we took it on a 2,500km road trip to see how it performs on and off the road. Read our full review: goo.gl/WK2h68
Our spotlight is on this 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with the Trailhawk Luxury Group package. This full tour and review of Jeep's mid-size SUV goes over all the important features of this trim and package level, as well as specific topics like the Rear-Sense parking assist feature, Uconnect® infotainment system, and the ability to put a child's booster seat in the back.
The is the most comprehensive episode of TestDrive Spotlight we've produced, making sure we cover as much about this SUV as possible without missing any major elements of it. On top of our typical test drive of the vehicle where we talk about ride comfort, handing, performance, and overall feel of the vehicle, we also take this Jeep Grand Cherokee off-road on some of Québec's winter off-road trails.
TestDrive is proudly produced in Acton, Québec, Canada.

I own a 2017 Trailhawk. I drive this car for 6 months. I took it off road in the mud, sand as well as in a 2-3 feet of snow. What I heard and saw in this review is opposite of what I know about this car. Myself and my brother lease cars every 3 years, so I can compare this car to other cars that I drove (including my brother's cars). Off road capabilities are sooooo much better than in Highlander, Explorer, CX9, Outback and Pilot. I have no Idea which SUVs (not body on frame vehicles) are better off road than Trailhawk, the author of this review is talking about. My car has an adaptive cruise control. Not many comparable SUVs have that. The car that was reviewed does not have an adaptive cruise control. You can get it for an additional cost if you get tired without it. I drove my car 700 miles in one weekend, and was not tired at all driving it, and I'm 6'7". The acceleration in the 3.6L, V6 is standard. All the SUVs in this class have similar 0-60 (miles/h) acceleration. If I'm not mistaken, Grand Cherokee can do 0-60 (miles/h) is 7.0 or 7.1 sec. The reverse automatic stop (break assistance) is always forking for me. I live in a big city and park my car in tight spots. When sensors detect that I'm too close to the obstruction, car immediately stops. This function is not working when the computer detects that you are using a brake pedal. The suspension in this car is soooo much softer than in CX9, Explorer sport. My feeling that the suspension in Trailhawk is similar to Highlander (I had 2014 model). Regarding off road capabilities, I was off road in deep puddles with mud, not the little mud shown in this review, the puddles with mud were so deep that I lost my license plate. All my wheels were covered in water/mud, but Trailhawk did not stuck. I'm not an expert reviewer, just expressing my experience and opinion. I'm sure that there are many better and more accurate reviews on KZfaq where you can see a better side of this car.

I certainly appreciate your feedback on this, but if everyone ends up publishing a review saying exactly the same thing, what's the point in other people reviewing cars. This is the way we found this car after 10 days and 3,000km of driving. Most press vehicles are given to journalists for 6-7 days and often limited to less than 1,000km. Also, most journalists will sugar coat or omit glaring issues in order to keep good relations with the auto manufacturers. Either way, this is the way we found this vehicle. Others will have a different experience with it. If you own one and love it, then enjoy it. Don't worry about what we felt about it if you enjoy yours.

You do not need to drive a car for a long time to know its off road capabilities. Just for my records, which stock SUV (not body on frame) you mentioned in your review is better off road than the Trailhawk? Did you try this car with adaptive cruise control?

I'm assuming you mean $60k Canadian dollars. Like a previous comment I got mine for $43k US dollars with the full luxury package. I think your review is kinda nit-picky. Maybe you child seat is too large or you need a full sized Suburban. I'm not a fan of the 4 Runner. It's boxy, stiff and the ride s horrible not too mention their Nav is probably the worst in the industry. I need a magnifying glass to read my buddy's map on his. As far as mud driving goes, you probably need a few lessons on how to offroad properly. Mud driving is all about momentum, not driving into a bog, stopping and turning the wheel every which way to get out. Any 4WD SUV would have issues doing that. The Trailhawk actually has much better articulation and 4WD system then the Wrangler. It's quite hard to mix 4WD with the ride comfort of a Range Rover while keeping the price down.

I usually rent GC 4x4 limited and they are great combination of ride handling and 4 wheel drive while being more road oriented than off road . It is one of my favorite all around vehicles I have ever driven. Definitely buying one for my next car, unless the Bronco knocks my socks off.

I bought one yesterday off the pavement and into the trails, the brake actuated traction system works perfectly. I had a tire 2ft off the ground and no slippage, had my dad drive through the same area to get a video and you can see how as soon as it's in the air it spins for a split second and then looses all power and shifts it to the other wheel on the ground, with worn out all terrains I was keeping up with a dodge power wagon with front and rear lockers and mickey thompsons. the power is excellent, plenty for offroading and great torque for overtaking cars. This review is in stark comparison to what I've done with mine. Sand mode works wonders, rock mode works great I never encountered any real mud though it was always hard packed dirt and water on top. But creepy crawling and everything else was amazing. Things that I wouldn't think a wrangler could do easily this will do without spinning a tire.
@Brandon-mf5uh
@Brandon-mf5uh 4 жыл бұрын
Off road worthiness is based on how you managed to get "stuck" in some mud. You're suppose to keep your momentum going without cutting the wheel. 2 airing down the tires is recommended. 3. Mudding isn't the only type of off-roading. 4. What vehicle in its class is more capable off-road? It has all terrain tires, sacrifices a small amount of road comfort for better off road ability.

I'm curious if you researched the towing capacity of this vehicle prior to this video (at the 09:00 videomark)? The V6 Jeep Grand Cherokee is tow rated at 6200 lbs and the V8 Hemi is rated at 7400 lbs. That's far more than enough to tow a small ATV or a U-haul trailer. To be fair, I'm not sure how many kilograms the Grand Cherokees towing prowess translates into.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 жыл бұрын
1,200lb difference is still a lot if you're thinking to do more than a trailer, as we mentioned. I wouldn't tow a large camper with the V6 but the smaller things are certainly going to be fine. You'll definitely want to look at the specifics of what you're towing though, whereas we're giving a general idea.
@ivanlowjones

Very true but towing a trailer with a small 4-wheeler or U-Haul trailer shouldn't pose any problem at all for a V6 equipped Grand Cherokee.

It's always good to have an honest review. However the seat buckle complaint you have alone shows the obvious bias you have for the vehicle. Pretty obvious that the buckle would have fit into place with just a little effort. Also UConnect is awesome so all those complaints seem pretty strange.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 жыл бұрын
I don't get what you mean, by a little effort. The seat belt buckles are essentially built into the seat cushion making it impossible to move, and the car seat could only fit one way. I actually had to remove the seat and position it off-centre just to make the belt fit, which isn't ideal for any parent. The buckles themselves should be moveable from the cushions in order to accommodate different size car seats. Sure, most people might not have this issue, but I also guarantee most people don't bring their car seats on a test drive at a dealership to find out these kinds of issues before buying.
@chuckfinley1546
@chuckfinley1546 6 жыл бұрын
It's strange that your review alone identifies ride quality, UConnect, and rear park assist as flaws when virtually all other reviewers identify ride quality and the UConnect infotainment system as some of the best in the industry. Park assist requires that the driver modulate the brake and throttle themselves. Your vehicle clearly stopped when it was moving into objects and is not advertised as a life saving system, simply one that stops before even more damage is done. The responsibility is still on the individual. It's also strange to recommend a Wrangler or 4Runner over this vehicle as they're very different vehicles that do very different things and are targeted at different audiences. Also, why did you stop in the mud? You don't go off road to stop in mud and turn around, you use momentum to continue through the mud. That was a poor decision and should not be used as a metric to judge the vehicle's capacities. Your opinions are certainly your own but they're clearly outliers when compared to numerous other professional and owner reviews. Edit: I'll certainly agree that it is overpriced. Also, when I saw ride comfort is best in the industry, I mean in it's class.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 жыл бұрын
We're definitely going to have our own opinions about things, and we don't sugarcoat in order to appeal to the manufactures like a lot of other review outlets. This is how we found this Jeep after driving 3,000km and having it for over a week and a half. Your mileage will vary.

Was it with the same Trailhawk package? We haven’t looked at the other trims, but the wheels with this package are Kevlar enhanced and designed more for off-road over conventional all-seasons. I think that might be why the ride was harsh. The last Grand Cherokee we drove was about 2 years ago, but would have been the base Laredo trim.

You don't slowly drive into the mud to test the offroad capability of pretty much any vehicle. I've driven mine in much worse conditions already and never had a problem at all.... unless you stop in a mud puddle and negate all your momentum. don't complain too much about price because the MSRP in italy for the v6 trailhawk (the 3.0 v6 turbodiesel 250hp or called also ecodiesel by FCA, the only gasoline version available was the 6.4 v8 SRT) cost 71k € or 107k CAD, yep seriously... the feature are similar but the adaptive cruise controll and the navigation system are standard meanwhile the remote starter is not available in europe due to pollution laws i guess. android auto is not jet available on this uconnect 8.4 but is available on the uconnect mk4 (with much more powerfull computing hardware and better screen quality), the new uconnect was announced some months ago on cars like the dodge durango. mud performance was quite bad because the tires are too slick for offroading and the massive vehicle weight dont help, a smaller and much more lighter offroad vehicle perform better in the mud.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely some good points there. The SRT version here is definitely more affordable than over there, but the top Trackhawk is about $107k here. We’d certainly like to try out the newer Uconnect system as this one was very disappointing, though consistent with other 2014-2017 models we’ve driven.

I’ve owned 5 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s and this is the most rugged of them, the Trailhawk. I do admit the tires are weak, one should change them out. But for an all around vehicle that is Rugged enough to handle any bumpy trail , one you can camp in, haul stuff, and still have some comforts this is the vehicle! In deep snow, use a different setting and raise the vehicle up. The active cruise control is the best, automatically adjusts to the changing traffic conditions. If one is seriously considering this vehicle look at more videos, this one will not depict the true vehicle. Albeit, you can buy a Wrangler or Rubicon etc, and spend way more $$ and have less room to haul stuff etc, and can’t sleep in it like a Grand Cherokee. Cheers Jeepster Fans! Here’s an example of the Trailhawk in Anza Borrego, CA, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6d_ZJemx-CdYKs.html

We've seen the Jeep enthusiasts are quite vocal when someone doesn't like one of their vehicles, we imagine a fully loaded non-SRT version is going to be a better experience overall. We drove the 2018 Dodge Challenger with the updated Uconnect system, since a lot of our dislike about this vehicle was centred around the technology, we were happy to see a lot of it has been improved with Uconnect 4.0. I'd say that we're looking forward to feature an updated Grand Cherokee to see if it can change our minds, but given the backlash from this video we don't plan on featuring any further vehicles from Jeep. Below in one of the comments you said you wont be reviewing jeep vehicles in the future due to the backlash but i would suggest keep doing it. Really, there are so many sugar coated reviews out there that are basically the same. Your opinion is very skewed. This car is my daily driver and way way more capable than you make it out to be.

How can my opinion be skewed if it's my opinion? We went into this vehicle with an open mind, spent 3,000km driving it around, and absolutely hated it. If you take out the off-roading segment, we still found this to be an awfully expensive vehicle that really fell flat. We've said this to other commenters, because we're transparent in what we do here; we don't sugarcoat our reviews to make the manufacturers happy. We genuinely disliked this vehicle, especially compared with so many other mid-size SUVs that are on the market. Just because we do not like this vehicle, does not mean you should get upset because you do. If you own this vehicle and like it, then go out and enjoy it. Don't be bothered by what we think about this vehicle just because it's a different opinion than your own.

I don't like your review. There are many things which I see in a different way. Off road capability is really great. I drove up to 2700 Meter altitute in to the Swiss alps and it worked great. By the way something funny: If you blame about the songs which change slowly.. The reason is, it change slowly because you use a CD. CDs are of course slowlier than USB ;)

No one used a CD on this car, it was through Bluetooth and USB. Check out the videos we've done on 2018 model year vehicles from Chrysler (Alfa Romeo excluded), the issues we had with Uconnect 3 have been resolved with Uconnect 4.

If you paid $43k Canadian, then that’s a deal, but I assume you’re in the US hence the price.

We agree. We found the same with other trims in the Grand Cherokee lineup, especially for the price point. Felt very cheap inside.
