I think one of the hardest lessons to learn, is to say “I fucked up, here’s what we can do”. Although not a make up artist, I am a piercer. I’ve done a couple not perfect piercings in the years I’ve been piercing. It’s fucking mortifying to have to tell someone you fucked up. But it’s always the best option. On the very small handful of times I’ve always said “nothing to worry about. But I’m not happy with the placement, and I’d be doing you a disservice letting you leave today with this piercing. Here’s what we can do…” Just be fucking honest with your clients please, no matter what service you are offering.

I would be absolutely devastated if someone messed up one of my piercings, but I think giving me my options and advice immediately would be best case scenario. I would be pissed if I went through the whole healing process and THEN found out it was messed up. Thank you for being real with your clients, CWM.

100% agree. Honesty goes a long way. Especially with me. We’re human, we fuck up. It can usually be fixed. I’ve had piercings that weren’t placed great. Great thing is they healed up and they were redone. Makeup is even easier to fix, it wipes off

@@kittyscreativecorner im not a piercer, but i have quite a few piercings. the options are to: a. keep the wonky piercing and heal as normal, b. remove the jewellery and let the wound heal, c. remove jewellery and repierce while still in shop. and to answer your second question, yes it will heal over, no holes and usually no scars. (though that depends on your bodys healing). most piercings will heal over without a hole when jewellery is left out long enough.

I agree. Gloves (clean of course) are always a welcome sight. 2020 definitely made people more aware of sanitation and hygiene yet it seemed to not last as long as it should have. It just seems so logical that any makeup artist should know how to maintain a clean & hygienic environment yet employers don’t really require any education for a lot of artists (but they should at minimum teach them before ever touching a client. It’s a somewhat unregulated field compared to hair or nails or skin esthetics but I really wonder if that will change. Makeup can cause health issues just as serious (or more) than nails. The eyes are very vulnerable. Judy D has to have a crazy immune system to survive some of the tools and blenders she has seen.

6:51 I say this all the time! Being honest about your abilities is such a professional trait. It also increases the trust between you and your customer. I went to get my bridge repierced and the piercer on duty was newer. I had gone to her before and she was amazing. She told me she doesn't do bridge piercings or high risk/more advanced piercings yet and she apologized profusely. I told her that I really appreciated her being honest and professional because there are piercers who will just try it anyway, despite the risks. It also means a lot to me that she turned down money because she didn't it do be done poorly. I ended up getting something else done and tipped her $40 😅

I'm glad you are using these videos as teachable moments instead of just dog piling on what I can only imagine is alot of online critism or hate.

I totally agree with you regarding working with a client. I don't wear a lot of makeup but I wanted to look nice for my wedding. I wanted to look like me but a more polished version. I had a trial with a makeup artist who turned up and seemed really nice for all of 10 mins. She only had certain big branded foundation in colours waaaay darker than my skin tone (think orange...) who then, after me saying I wanted a mostly natural look but a slightly darker 'smokey eye' in browns rather than blacks/greys. I looked so orange and it didn't sit on my skin at all. I have issues with certain products and was reacting immediately to her foundation. I suggested we try mine but she wouldn't until we had tried 3 different foundations, all varing degrees of orange... I suggested we use my foundation but then use everything else of hers. To say I got a look is an understatement. Then came the comment 'I don't use cheap brands, they don't work and look crap'. At the time I was using max factor as it was the ONLY one I didn't react to and I needed something that colour matched me and sat properly. She complained the entire way through putting it on, only to then state 'it ain't that bad, I might have to get one' 😳 My soon to be hubby commented 'I like it but you don't look any different except caked in it, why not do it yourself? I cried because she made me feel so awful. I was 38 and had spent from ages 10- 33 years with severe acne, all I wanted was to feel special on one day where I would look a prettier version of me. Instead, when I messaged her to say I think I might do it myself (I wasn't confident enough to say I didn't like how she treated me) but thank you for the trial I received - 'I think that's best. I do proper make up for professionals and clearly that's not what you want'. My hair trial was immediate after the mua left and she was also a mua. She say how upset I was and said she could try and fix it for me (at no cost) and she did. I then booked her in for a trial and she was so kind, caring and importantly worked with me to make me feel pretty. That included trying 3 different normal foundations, one spray one and then my own to see what would work best for me. She had no issue using mine and did a fab job on the day! I know this has been a bit of a story but the whole thing is, work with the person. If you can't get it how they like either say so or suggest an alternative. Don't make that person feel awful and that it is their fault they have acne/scarring/lighter or darker skin. Adapt with them. I've now found at 42 my skin prefers a medium coverage and Bourjois works for me.

Yes, thank you for commenting on prices. I'm a traveling hair and makeup artist. Around $175 is what I charge for hair and makeup. Then there are other factors of pricing. Such as trials, drive time and the such. Also, I do require trials, which is an additional pricing. This is because I get a chance to know what I need for each client individually. I have a large rolling kit with additional two more carry bags, because I accommodate for both hair and makeup, its definitely work. There is no way I can carry every single color under the sun for every type of product, so trials are nessasary. Plus I only carry so many types of brands and colors for foundation tints, so I mix almost every foundation for a more custom color. Definitely a lot of tricks, makeup artists have to learn and implement. I personally really detest those who say they are makeup artists but have no clue how hard and technical the work actually is. Sorry, rant over! 😘😘😘😘 one last thing, I do use beauty blender. However, I alway use a fresh clean, sanitized, black one for every client. If I'm doing 5 clients at one event, I bring 5 beauty blenders. Plus, I always bring cleaners with me, just in case I need to reclean one.

I like that he never seems mean. All of the feedback is him identifying issues, talking about what might be going on, and a better way to approach it. It's constructive criticism.

I'm no makeup artist but I usually have most colours of pencil because it helps if you like changing up your look a lot. I am really surprised they didn't have a blue pencil because, at the very least, I always have black, brown and navy pencils in my "normal old lady" kit. Yeah white and the primary colours are pretty much a must.

One thing that I noted was the artist's nails. I used to be a professional makeup artist and we were instructed to always keep our nails short, filed, natural, and clean. Clients don't want to feel your fingernails on their face.

The only time I ever had my makeup done was when I was in my bffs wedding and her mom organized and paid for us to have it done. The artist I don’t think ever worked on somebody who was naturally blonde. Got to the car and had to tight line my upper lash line, fill in my own brows and do mascara and lashes myself because it looked absolutely insane lmao a neutral glam smoky eye with floating liner, invisible brows and invisible lashes lol I looked startled or something 😅

I have had the exact opposite! Being black, a lot of 'high quality' salons have NO IDEA how to work with my skin or my hair and they think 'darker is better' or 'Lighter is better' and either end up making me look toasted or ashy. Bitch just give me some lotion and highlighter n' let me do it myself if you're gonna be like that--

Honestly, I actually really quite liked the initial blue line along the upper eyelid area, and the slightly smudged black along the lashline. If they had blended the blue out a bit more above the initial line, cut the lid with primer or lay down a solid light colour eyeshadow as a base then done some glitter, followed by a nice sharp eye liner, it would've looked so awesome! I do wonder if having their work recorded made them nervous and anxious, thus leading them to rush and smack on everything they could think of. A shame, but like you said, they clearly do have the skill to create wonderful looks.

Love how you give fantastic advice without being rude or insulting. This is what I have always loved about you. Omg I remember when I had a bridal party of 6 and it started going wrong with one of the bridesmaids, she had changed what she wanted from the trial. I knew I could do it but it wasn’t something I’d tried on her. I hadn’t been doing makeup that long, maybe a few months. I realised I was only going to make things worse so I asked the hairdresser to continue with that bridesmaid as I needed to go to reception to make a call to try to have something delivered for this job. (Before mobile phones were that good and worked everywhere!) Thankfully I had plenty of time. I went outside and smoked a cigarette, i just needed to walk away and think. I went back reevaluated and found what I needed to do to rectify my problem. Sometimes just taking 2 minutes away can make a huge difference. 2 minutes in the time won’t hurt, but half an hour starting again sometimes will! I learned a valuable lesson then.

Something I learned from watching Golden Girls actually… when you lay back, gravity helps you look very youthful. That’s all great and good, but when you’re having your makeup done and asked to lay back, your face is going to look fabulous. When you sit up to where you are normally again? Minimally it’s going to look different. Have your makeup done at an angle close to how you would do makeup.
