I love that both of the lead characters are actually both twisted people and they don’t try to give Sebastian the ultimate happy ending because he still did horrible stuff and Annette is the one who exposes Kathryn in the end a great ending and lol yes the sibling relationship is weird as hell but that was in a lot of these 90s and older films lol

In my opinion the only reason they didn’t give him a happy ending is because they completely adapted the book. If the book had a happier ending the movie would’ve as well because in the 90s it was very popular to redeem bad men through love and give them a fairytale ending

The diary says: "There has never been a single person in human existence quite like Kathryn. Stunning to look at, and exciting to be near - cold as ice. She cares about absolutely no one but herself. This girl has elevated self-absorption into an art form. She believes in nothing and laughs in the face of sadness, faith, and sincerity. A person solely observing her and having seen the damage she's done to so many lives would most likely classify her as evil. She scoffs at any and every type of religion, all the while manipulating others by using the idea of being religious all to her advantage. She'll steal monetarily or emotionally from anyone who crosses her path, spend night after night in drunken, drug-induced debauchery, but lives this other life as the consummate perfect angel. She is in a sense brilliant, as evidenced by the fact that she has indeed completely fooled each person she has ever had to-except me-and she knows it. We are very similar people except I have a heart, and from time to time, actually feel emotion Kathryn does not. I have seen her break the spirits of others, cheat on anyone supposedly important to her, and all these things are done without so much as a second thought."

A lot of people don’t realize that as evil as Kathryn is Annette is still giving her one more chance in the bathroom scene. She is giving her a final shot to come clean and be honest about who she is and what she has done. Annette even repeats what Kathryn said previously about “when I feel I can’t go on I turned to Jesus and he helps me through it” to insinuate to her that she saw her snort coke from the stall. This is also the moment Annette knows she can believe everything Sebastian wrote in his journal. When Kathryn still doesn’t take the bate, that is when Annette decides to release Sebastians journal.

Ryan Phillippe(Sebastian) and Reese Witherspoon were actually dating each other when making this movie. They had been dating about 2 years prior to making this. They 1st met each other at Reese's 21st birthday party, where Reese seen Ryan, went up to him, and asked him if he was her birthday present. They got married the same year this movie was released. Sadly the marriage didn't last. They divorced after 7 years. They have 2 children together. When they were filming the break up scene in this movie, it was emotionally challenging for both of them. The slap Annette gives Sebastian was not in the script, Reese improved that slap because she was so upset. After the scene, when Ryan walks out the door, he vomits because of how emotional that scene was for both of them.

In terms of comparing “Cruel Intentions” to “Clueless,” the main thing that comes to mind is that they are adaptations of classic writings from hundreds of years ago. “Cruel Intentions” was from the French novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.” “Clueless” was from Jane Austin’s “Emma.” And while we’re at it, “10 Things I Hate About You” is from Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.” It seems Hollywood is allergic to original stories. Lol. To be fair though, they did a great job translating all of them to teens.

" It seems Hollywood is allergic to original stories." Funny, that you mention that and Shakespear in the same comment - who borrowed all kinds of plots. FYI, as a survivor (with some difficulty) of having my smallish car hit by a much heavier Chevy Topkick using the right-turn-only lane to run a red light at high speed, you can be bleeding out internally while not looking, or thanks to adrenaline, even feeling very bad right after being hit. Fortunately, witnesses prevented me from aggravating fractured vertebrae and I got airlifted to a trauma center in time to remove my ruptured spleen, repair my lacerated liver, and transfuse 3 qt of my blood volume.

prolly someone has said it already, but just in case: internal bleeding can kill you within 2 hrs without knowing you're internally bleeding. especially a severed spleen or a punctured lung that hasn't made itself known yet. we don't know the cause of death here but it could also be a delayed consequence of head injury and brain damage.

They made a pilot of a spin off and it never went off the ground but it has big implications for Annette if you want to think about it as canon. It’s about Annette’s son with Sebastian so it is basically saying that she was pregnant when she left in that car. Bash (the son) finds out about his real dad and decides to meet his father’s family and that’s how he meets Kathryn, her step daughter, and the entire household she’s manipulating.

I have been waiting forever for this to go up!! I love this film so much! The soundtrack is so typical 90s, the story, the actors and the symbolism, which Bryce touched on! When Annette gets the car and puts his shades on 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I personally love stories that weave characters together like this, it was always so crazy to me that Kathryn and Annette never crossed paths. Sarah carried this film on her back! This is one of my fav roles from her just because of how gritty and manipulative it is, so different from her typical roles. And she does look so different with the dark hair. Something interesting is her and Ryan (that played Sebastian) are in I Know What You Did Last Summer together. Horror film that would be great to watch, even if it’s not on the channel! She has one of the most iconic chase sequences. Such a great video, I love your reactions and edits as always. Y’all are just hilarious! I literally burst out laughing when Bryce said “y’all go for it and I’ll watch!” 🤣🤣🤣 I’m glad you enjoyed it, big love💜

Fun(?) fact: Sebastian actually did hit Kathryn in the original script, there's a deleted scene of it. They cut it because they thought it made Sebastian look too unsympathetic as a character (as if everything else he did throughout the movie, including revenge porn and sexual assault, didn't already make him an unsympathetic character 🤪). They didn't cut the line where Kathryn tells Ronald that he hit her, though, as keeping it adds to the villainising of Kathryn (who is, in my opinion, the more sympathetic of the two antagonists - she's been unfairly victimised by a sexist culture that dictates she hide her sexuality lest she be branded a 'slut', and is constantly used for her sexuality by boys who don't view her as long-term relationship material because of her sexuality. She has no real friendships and clearly copes by using drugs. None of this justifies nor absolves her of her evil deeds, of course. It's just interesting to think about which of the two siblings this movie wants us to sympathise with more, and why).

Back in 2016 I believe, there was an unaired tv show Cruel Intentions pilot, I watched part of it and I kinda wish it got picked up. In the tv show version, Annette had gotten pregnant and gave birth to Sebastion's son, who I think found the book and his dads car. Anette and Katherine also come face to face again now that they're grown and have an actual mature conversation about Sebastion and everything that led up to his death. I really liked what I saw, check it out maybe?

There was a film called Dangerous Liaisons (1988) on this. It is originally a French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos (1782)

This was a hilarious reaction you guys! Your faces seeing all the madness unfold was pure gold! I grew up with this film and I was a teen when I watched this. It's so weird to see you guys take it so seriously, like how messed up Kathryn and Sebastian are. I mean they ARE, but oddly enough, I never found this movie weird , sexual or crazy. It always felt so over the top so those scenes I never took seriously. I also remember really liking the chemistry between Sebastian and Anette so I always felt more invested in their arc of falling in love than any of the other stuff. I always thought of this as a "fun" movie to be honest haha. But then again I grew up with films like "American Pie" so a lot of the things that people point out as messed up or inappropriate in earlier films, (even if the points are valid) never really register that way in my mind. I always separated movies as pure entertainment but it was interesting to hear your thoughts on how messed up this film is 😂And I'm glad you guys appreciated the ending. Sarah Michelle Gellar is such an underrated actress and she killed it in this role. I don't see Buffy, I only see Kathryn, which is so impressive to me considering how she was so well known for Buffy at the time. I'll always remember that tear drop when she gets exposed and the song "Bittersweet Symphony" playing in the background. This film is so ICONIC! I love it! Thanks for reacting! :)

Well, the movie premiered in early March 1999, Ava was born in early September 1999. Since every movie needs a post-production phase for editing, adding music etc. the shooting was probably already finished or at the very end by the time Reese got pregnant.

There are several movie adaptations of the 18th-century French novel on which this was based. The book _Les Liaisons dangereuses_ was extremely controversial and at times banned after it was published in the 1780s; Queen Marie Antoinette had her copy bound in plain leather so she could read it secretly. Like _Cruel Intentions_ , Roger Vadim's 1959 French version _Les Liaisons dangereuses_ was updated to the time when it was made. Stephen Frears' 1988 version _Dangerous Liaisons_ is a more faithful in-period costume drama based on Christopher Hampton's earlier stage adaption. Milos Forman, having lost to Frears in obtaining the play's rights, went back to the public-domain novel for his 1989 version titled _Valmont_ (which is the last name of the character corresponding to Sebastian); it is also set in the novel's time, but Forman cast actors who were a bit younger and prettier than Frears did. There are even newer adaptations by South Korean and Chinese directors setting the story in their own history and lands. Apparently the concept of idle rich aristocrats playing sexual games for dominance over each other is a cross-cultural phenomenon.
