Perhaps you'd want to insulate the back of the coil, since it's not absorbing much sunlight, and just dissipates heat to the surrounding air?

Do you think a soot coating would work to capture the heat? I think (?) it would be less toxic than paint if you ever wanted to use the coil for making beer (or, uh, hand sanitizer) again.

Dan, it looks to me like you just made post-apocalyptic Survival a thing of ease, with this. Not only can you heat water for bathing, etc... but that demonstration of quick flash steam shows that we can use a fresnel lenz to speed up the process of distilling water. So if we have barrels of lake water, we can use this setup to flash the water to steam and collect the condensate... quick and easy distillation. I wonder if this would also work for distillation of alcohol?
@NGinuity2 жыл бұрын
There is one small hitch....the boiling point of alcohol is much lower than water, which is why alcohol vapor distillation is possible. Your temperature needs to be steady at about 175F degrees (alcohol boils at 173F). Water boils at 212F so you want to keep it well below that. It's not altogether impossible but you're basically talking about needing a heat exchanger at some point in the mix to regulate the temperature.
@OhPervyOne2 жыл бұрын

water distillers know what they're doing. it is possible to turn water into steam and concentrate the particulates in the steam. that's not what you want to to do.

Hey Dan so pleased to see another video from you after such a time! I have deduced that (especially in cold climates/ air temp) evacuated tubes with heat rods are perhaps the best heat concentrators - meaning temperature increase per surface area. Perhaps however for a given surface area, using an optical concentrator such as this coil could be better? Certainly this is alot cheaper!

Funny, I was thinking of doing this with the high side lines of AC lines to sanitize water in a emergency or warm small showers. They are similar in size and have been collecting a few over time, but I'm sure these stainless steel lines would tolerate more heat without melting. Thanks for the heads upnon where to look for them!

Glad to see you back, could you do a half round shiny surface behind it and reflect on the whole back and some glass in front and use no lens Put some together, probably be a effective water heater, the half round would probably have to be the size of a half barrel for the size of the Coil and maybe get some hot air through it also hope you will try it.

Nice - I believe this is how the tankless water heaters work but they use natural gas to heat up the coils and electricity for electric version. Using the sun to heat up water is also an excellent idea I remember when I left a tool outside in the sun it was so hot I had to use gloves to pick it up. Metal seems to just absorb the suns heat.

Tankless water heaters (elec) have a brass manifold with immersion heaters (same as a regular hot water heater, only the heater(s) are smaller) that are installed in the manifold allowing the water to flow around said heater(s)

I have a similar design using 'Leibig condenser" type setup. But heat oil to heat the water. Proves more efficient after intial heat as less loss over time than water. (Plus oil can go to over 100°C without becoming steam) Steam equals turbine equals CHP. Combined heat and power.
@thespacecowboy420 Жыл бұрын
I ordered a linear lens from you a while back. I just put in an order for linear actuators and sensors to automate the aiming of the lens. I was planning on using aluminum vehicle radiators as my heat exchange since this lens isn't rated to melt it and it will be on a heat exchanging loop. If I ever actually get this thing built and it works I'll drop you an email.

I'm curious, would such a coil actually pump water to a higher elevation while it's being heated and turning the water to steam?
@hugoh.9694 Жыл бұрын
It seems to me you COULD do that by connecting this to a pressurizing tank. You would need to be sure to add a reliefe valve (possibly two so you always have a back up in case one faild) to relieve the pressure once it exceeds a certain threshold so as to not explode your pressurizing tank. I would watch some YT videos exposing and explaining the innards of pressurizing tanks so you get an idea on how you would connect this to push water. Seems totally doable to me.

idea, what if in stead of a stationary Concentrating Solar Parabolic Trough, one made a hot house trough, where you made a roof just wide enough for the fresnel lens sideways, you put several side by side in an arc, so that they were all pointing at different angles, say 10-15 degrees difference from lens to lens, catching the sun from morning to evening and the bottom was a serpentine or coil of copper tubing so that several times through out the day the sun would hit a lens perfectly on the parabola shaped copper tubing for max heating without burning or melting anything, and the sun would continuously hit them all heating the air in side the box? would this pretty much create steam for house heading temperatures?. is there a better stationary design (no sun trackers)?

@jcims2 жыл бұрын
Copper transfers heat even better than stainless, but you'd still need to give it a black coating.
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE2 жыл бұрын
Copper would be better especially if it has tarnished a bit naturally. Downside to stainless is the need for black paint which results in a second surface thermal barrier... minor but makes a difference. If you can evacuate air in the box with sealed argon, your efficiency will go way up. Make sure your target area is smaller than the lens you are using or it is a net zero....

Make your solar heated hot water (near boiling point),then beam a condensed solar ray on the metal pipe and shoot all the steam in a Stirling engine
@nemem027 ай бұрын
I think is salt what they used back then when they tried to produce steam from heating with fresnel or mirrors, the salt can be melted and thar way holds more heat. In real life the thing had leaks and they never generated anything. Maybe a ceramic is the solution, surrounded by steel so it heats water and produce steam.

Too bad you can't get a fresnel in a band focus so you could trough over a reflector halfpipe and make this feasible without having the focal aspect be a just a spot.
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE2 жыл бұрын
Mirrors, even flat would work for that. Curved Fresnel lenses lose a lot of their concentration to a common focal point when curved. They do require less tracking but there is a trade off. For a project like this, moving the target closer, so the focal pattern covers the entire collection area is more efficient for mass collection.
@brianstevens38582 жыл бұрын
@@GREENPOWERSCIENCE I don't mean bending the fresnel, I mean a mirror curved underneath the band of focus so the concentration is on a line, and the trough reflects what goes around the collector pipe, reflecting it to the underside so you have a full light condition on the collector. Hard to get more efficient than that.
