This is the iconic Mission speaker. Truly Mission is a "one-hit wonder" speaker company, hence the absolute necessity to resurrect this model, AS WAS, in order to save it from the ashcan of Audio History...EVERY single Mission speaker I've heard other (IOW, after...🙄) than the 770 that followed it, including the "770 Freedom" were/are puerile!😬🙉😲😰😝😛 The Cyrus line of electronics that followed was decent enough, & undoubtedly saved the company.🤔 A superb review Andrew, I also liked hearing Kristi's comments & POV as the commentary of 2 intelligent & highly perceptive connoisseurs is better than one! You absolutely NAILED 🔨🔨🔨 the sound of the speakers. Even though I have yet to hear these reissues, your descriptions of their sound is EXACTLY what the originals that I know so well & spent many years listening to sound like. This suggests that the team at Mission (IAG? Peter Comeau, then?) got this authentic as possible! Hopefully not down to making a carbon copy of the original (SEAS?) tweeter, which was one of the very first to use the miracle 💩 known as "ferrofluid" to enhance power handling & nothing else 🙉😛🔨. It gave the original a "shiny" colouration that turned into outright GLARE in the trebles, & the ferrofluid oil in the voice coil gap would dry up & increase viscosity or otherwise get "contaminated" just after the warranty ran out (!🙄😡), sooner with the injudicious use if the volume control (Ahem!), & then the treble became frankly UNLISTENABLE at that point 😱😨😵😵😵😢! Mission were nevertheless good enough to send my friend a fresh set of replacement tweeters, gratis(!!!), despite the recent expiration of their 5 year warranty!😮😘 The 770's were enough of a revelation in their time to still be a breath of fresh air now. But what they did in late '70s Britain was quite the shock to English ears bred & used to the likes of QUAD ESL's, various commercialised BBC Monitors (LS3/5a, LS6, LS5/9...), giant IMF transmission line jobs, KEF's, and Bowers & Wilkins DM2/II's, DM6's ("the Pregnant Penguin"😉) & oh so polite DM7's... Instead of being like all those; modest pieces of Victorian parlour furniture designed to blend into room corners & with soft trebles, low efficiency & "polite" dynamics, unfocused & vague imaging, & thuddy bloated bass that was closer to sonic diahorrea than actual distinct & recognisable notes!😪😴🤒 Then along comes this bolt from the blue, lighting the blue touch paper!💥😯😮 Designed to played with dowdy front grilles removed, IN YO FACE! white front panel with GIANT logo in a bleeding edge modern script, with some of the tightest bass you'll ever hear but not "enhanced" by not going very low, an utterly neutral presentation with that *very* slight hint of artfully-judged midrange forwardness, a soaring treble of near frightening speed & exquisite articulation, a remarkably "boxless" presentation with dynamics all out of proportion to the compact enclosure & more like a professional monitor speaker in a Rock Music Studio! Suddenly, English speaker design was catapulted forward 10 years; leaving the "Pipe & Slippers" crowd dazed & confused like deer caught in the headlights of oncoming traffic! Too bad about the cheesy stands on these new ones. And no, they appear to be decent in your video...🤔😕 As for comparing an Abbey Road grade of studio monitor to a bunch of incredibly coloured, off-the-charts distortion DIRTBAG drivers made from recycled carboard & mated to ringing, resonant, & SQUONKing horns, with NO evidence that any particular effort was put into having these CRAP drivers mate to one another with a crossover much more complicated than a scramble-wound coil of 22ga wire & a single 5μF, 5¢ electrolytic capacitor, all thrown into a big, HIGHLY resonant, empty-sounding MDF box w/o any apparent sound absorbing materials used inside it, AT ALL, that sounds no better than the glue & sawdust that MDF is made of, that MAY🤔, SORT OF,😕 "KINDA"🤒 sound "OK"🤓 at a VERY low volume, but then sounds like an ongoing TRAIN WRECK as soon as you turn up the volume up beyond a whisper (or more than 2 instruments try to play simultaneously!😜)... There IS, NO, comparison!!! I'm glad I don't own speakers that emulate a live rock or pop concert sound. Because I can't count on one finger ANY of the dozens of live shows I've ever attended that didn't leave my ears TERRORISED 😱😱😱 & ringing, & just plain HURTING 😬🙉😬🙉😬 for days after from the singularly AWFUL 💩 NOISE I was subjected to in a venue with acoustics worse than the public bathrooms in a train station by speakers with badges like "Altec" "JBL" "Klipsch" & "University" plastered on their FUGLY beat-up & abused cabinets!!! 🙄🔫

I used to work for Mission when I lived in England. I knew the Azima brothers, Henry and Farad very very well. Peter Comeau has kept the Mission sound alive and brought the latest technology to these speakers without sacrificing what Farad and Henry had in mind with the original 770's, still my favorite Missions. Your excellent review paid tribute to a wonderful company and the listening pleasure thousands of audiophiles around the world have experienced. I'm getting mine soon!

I also worked for Mission for 12 years, enjoyed my time there, had rosewood 783’s paired with an Arcam Alpha 9. Was at Quad for 16 years before Mission. Still miss those days. The demise of British Audio manufacturing is a very sad loss.

The search is FINALLY over! After watching more reviews than the law allows, you had me at "Their speed, detail, and texture retrieval were captivating from the moment I pressed play". And, as Kristi gave them high marks as well, that made the decision to pull the trigger that much easier👍 They arrived in my home several hours ago, and all that I can say is that I definitely made the right choice for my listening tastes.

In the UK, back in the 2000’s, Mission speakers were a rite of passage to the wider Hi-fi world for most of that generation. Aways we’re good speakers at a fair price.

Another outstanding review! Thanks. I really enjoyed and agree with your analysis on different speaker types. Horn, electrostatic, planar, etc. Having recently owned Cornwall IV's, Wharfedale Lintons and a few others I now have Magnepan 3.7i's. I'm quite happy with them but still enjoy other types. I also own Rogers LS3/5A's and a pair of CSS Criton 2TDX tower kits. Each has a very different sound and I enjoy them all. I also kind of miss my CW's and may end up buying another pair of Heritage speakers. I'm watching the used market since Klipsch fixed their pricing with dealers. Your description of the differences in sound, live vs studio and the type of speaker is just about as perfect a description as I have heard. Thanks to you and Kristi for your reviews. I watch every one of them! I'd love to hear your thoughts on Magnepan as well as a review of Harbeth and Spendor as they both have a unique presentation. Just a thought.

I remember the original Mission 770's and listening to them in the showrooms. Their sound really stood out in any detailed presentations. Then I read all the reviews and they were very favorable. These speakers are going to be a winner for Mission in my estimation because of their heritage, proven design, flexibility for producing great sound of different program material and ease of placement. Good review as always.

About 30 years ago I went to a dealer to hear a pair of Kef Reference One speakers. The dealer said he had a pair of Mission speakers in same price range. I knew nothing about that brand but I gave it a go. We listened to classical music and rock music. The listening session took a little bit longer than 3 hours. It was a close call but the Kef was my favorite. Later on I was in the market for a desktop solution and without thinking I bought a pair of small Missions and they were fantastic. So I can imagine that the new Missions are sounding great. Greetings, Ludo Belgium

Really good discussion about how some speaker designs aren’t necessarily “better” they’re just “different.” Besides, speakers are so room dependent that a great speaker in one room can be not-so-great in another.

I had a pair of these back in 1980 -They were flavour of the month with reviewers then . Then they were properly tested and found to be lacking . The front port suffers from "chuffing" and we owners resorted to packing with straws. I eventually shipped them with me to Oz and sold them. Bought a pair of Infinity Kappa 9's . Awesome 👏🏾 enjoyed I’d seen another person covered the new 770, rescued a very nice old original pair five -six years ago from scrap hauler. I did love the speakers, and great range overall in a small room! One difference is originals I believe had the wire terminals on bottom in an odd spot designed for the stands they had at the time. Unfortunately the woofers did succumb to a problematic amp with DC , but replaced the woofers and moved them to a good home of a buddy! They are still among my favorites of the many speakers I’ve had. Thanx 4 a Cool review glad to see Mission has brought them back! ✌🏽💯💯🙏🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Back in the late 90s, my first hifi separates system included the Mission 731 speakers. Cheap at about £130. They gave me the hifi bug, and I soon "upgraded" to B&W 603 S2 at around £700 which were very disappointing. I lived with them for far too many years. However, following a recent house move, and some dusty renovation works, my "good" system is currently boxed up in favour of my sacrificial, old Sony AV amp and Mission 731s - OMG!! I clearly made a mistake upgrading them.... The 770s, hear I come - house renovations, completed !!

Nice review! Always good to see you vibing with a product. I'm a Maggie fan at this point, not sure I could move away from their style of presentation. I'm really hoping that they are brought into the conversation here in a more meaningful way as I'm sure they are cross shopped with speakers that you review, but I also understand they can be difficult to get a hold of as far as review samples. Great review, as always! I'm not sure if this has been mentioned in the comments, but Mission and Wharfedale are part of the same company: IAG. Just watched this video. I've owned 770 Freedoms (MKIV)since 1990. Originally paired with a Sansui AU-G99X. Stunning sound as the Missions crave power although boasting a 91db SPL. They come alive when pushed hard. Clarity, Soundstage, and detail. In studio sound? Absolutely. These speakers impress to this day. I do run a sub as they do drop a bit after 50hz.

Great review, had a pair back in the late 80's handed down to me from my brother in-law and used them with (at the time) a "high end Sanyo receiver. Didn't really appreciate them (who knew) compared to the 12" Cerwin Vega's that hit a lot harder. I think you stay a step ahead of most reviewers by bringing in not so common brands to the audience 👍🏽. Soooooo, maybe a look at the NHT C-Series C-3 three way bookies for throwback purposes ?

I too regularly use The Crystal Method's Vegas disc to test both bass and dynamics. I don't listen to as much techno as I used to, but that is one that I still enjoy. Comin' Back is good for female vocals, and it was recorded lively,

Fav Mission speaker is not my 770 Freedoms (really really stupid stands) but the original Model 70 (had since new) which I liked so much bought another pair secondhand (the Mk II) a year or two later. Still have both pairs which have had some repair work but sound amazing for bookshelf models. The reversal of driver arrangement (bass top, tweeter bottom) was perfect for my listening taste. Now I have a complete set of SVS ultra's (without the sub). First time seeing your channel and cool review - so thanks (from Tasmania) Andrew & Kristi 🙂

Great review guys, obviously i haven't heard the latest 770's that said my favourite mission speakers i used to own were the 752 Freedoms, simply wonderful speakers and only £650 (about $1000)? Although that was back in 1996. I honestly think they would still be right up there with speakers today between £1500-£2000

I really rate Mission. I have a pair of their 753's floor-standers from the early 90's. Sold for about £600 a pair back then but you can pick them up on the bay now for under £500. I think I paid a little under £400 for mine! Best £400 I ever spent!! :)

Great review guys. This really gave me a lot to think about for my own journey. I'm in a smallish room and thought bookshelf with subs, all the way. But there was something a bit anemic about this setup. And then I got some big floorstanders, and realized... I'm not really getting the most from these in this small room. So I got some mid towers. Those are getting there, but I'm still missing some of that fullness, even with the subs. The classic 3-way design, or something like this with a single 8" may just be my ticket. I'm looking to end the game (for a while) and stop buying and just start enjoying the sound. Something like these mission could end my searches for a good while, at least a year lol

I have a pair of Misson 782 speakers that I bought around 20 years ago and I'm still using them today. They where the first speakers I bought when I had my own place as part of a 5.1 surround sound set up but now just listen to music with them. I've no idea how well they are rated but I enjoy them. I do have the upgrade inch though and would love to upgrade to a new more hi-end pair of speakers. I'm just not sure if the 770's are more high end than the 782's. Thanks for the great review.

Have a pair of their much smaller brothers (Mission 731s) in the office setup currently - they sound very nice driven by a similarly aged NAD 302 integrated (being fed Spotify via a WIIM mini). Best part was being able to get the 731s (with mini stands) for $45 (CDN) secondhand 😁

I definitely like the look and sound of new speakers that give a nod to vintage era speakers like these Mission speakers do. It got me thinking. Is the lure of vintage looking/sounding speakers have more to do with they are what we already know or are "new design' lacking something?

Nice product, great review. Just a simple question, you used fairly expensive amps to power them, any thoughts, when reviewing other speakers, to also use those old Pioneers, the SX450 and 780 as power sources? Frankly I like them better with the grills on, much cleaner look.

These are beautiful! Love the classic white and black woofers, the white cabinet front and the walnut finish. Really glad to hear they sound as good as they look. I wish I could afford them but that’s not Mission fault. The only thing I might prefer is if the grills were white instead of black because they have a such a modern, light look with them off but with them on they just look a little less special. Great review, also they look amazing in your house!

Great review just joined happy to be here. The 770 is a little beyond my budget. I am purchasing the KLH model fives to replace my just passing away paradigm studio 20s v2. One speaker the driver gave up. I have a twenty year old rotel rb1080 amp still kicking along great. 200 watts per channel what is your thoughts on the match up with the model fives and my amp. Also once again thank you and your wife for good grounded audio advice. Thank you

Those are beautiful looking. The graphics right on the front are not my favorite but I would keep the grills on. Question though, I have a pair of Model 5’s in a smaller room I am looking at a pair of Forte’s for a much larger room, I also love the live presence that the Fortes give. Would a speaker like the Mission just give me a better / more refined Model 5 “sound” I really want something different so I can have multiple sonic experiences. Within the same house.
