I own Qutest, Ares II, Pontus II. I just got Draco and currently better than the my previous. Still breaking in as images not as solid and layering not as defined. Will wait another two weeks. Draco even new has more musical detail.
@MusicLover-012 жыл бұрын
@@klepp19 I own the Qutest and now the Pontus 2. Tried the Musician Pegasus before I bought the Qutest and felt that it was amazing for mids but fundamentally flawed in terms of high frequency extension and too rounded on the detail. Pontus 2 is my preferred sound, it is an amazing purchase for analogue like realism and emotional engagement, with Qutest top for detail/transparency. Draco is meant to be a notch under Pegasus, just goes to show that price doesn't equal sound.
@klepp192 жыл бұрын
@@MusicLover-01 Hey there! Yes if price similar not revelant. As you know I just added the Draco based on a KZfaqr raving about it. Had it plugged in overnight and listened for 4 hrs on Sunday. On first listen same tonality. 2 hrs in I hear details in songs and were noticed before on my Pontus. As it stands Pontus has slight edge in image density and separated space in the layered soundstage. But Draco trumps it in important details like a singers voice echoing off the walls of the concert venue.

Great Terry, Interesting that they sound so different, being clearly from the same manufacturer. Lean upper bass/lower mids is exactly what I don’t like about the Ares II (along with some sharpness on especially vocals). Looking forward to your comparison with the Pontus! 😊
@PursuitPerfectSystem2 жыл бұрын
You would probably like the Pontus II then in your system, the oversampling seems to help with the sharpness but you do need to pay attention to the signal going into these DACs, they can sound very bloated and shouty or tight and resolving depending on the signal going in
@thepickyaudiophile2 жыл бұрын
@@PursuitPerfectSystem That's really interesting Terry, hope you will get into the signal/input in part in your Pontus review! This may explain why some people/reviewers find the Ares II sharp in OS Slow, while other find it sharp in "NOS" (linear interpolation) mode 🤔 I'm feeding it USB through AQ Carbon cable from an Allo USBridge Signature with linear power supply and am in the "NOS is the more forgiving" camp (but it looses some of that sound stage/imaging magic).

OK Terry…very thorough review… this DAC sounds out of my sound preference, I like full and powerful…Plus… there is some serious variation in reviews of this company's support and quality control….so…with all the solid choices out there in DAC-Land this is a pass for me. @@alanm.thornton4055 yes Alan….at the price of these DACs…I am obsessively "repeat listening" to some reviews as well. I am using a Marantz 30n SACD/Streamer as my source w/Burr-Brown chip-based DAC. Don’t get me wrong I I’m sure the Aquarius is a fine product and I thoroughly enjoyed your review and your take and description as a whole. Now with the schiit of course in my opinion it doesn’t portray that clarity and transparency you mention as being an integral part of the musicians audio but what it does do is make music musical and it really highlights the beauty and timbre and textural variation inherent in whatever you’re listening to. Is this a joke? A Topping DX3 Pro+ blows this thing out of the water! Instead of just looking at the fancy resistors, try actually testing the output (where it matters)! First of all, this Aquarius can only handle sample rates up to 192 kHz (what is this 2005?!) so you can't even play your higher-resolution files! The Topping can go up to 768 kHz! The Aquarius "boasts" .005% THD while the Topping is .000014%. The Topping is in another class! Oh, and did I mention that the Topping costs $200, which is160x less than this?! When people have more money than sense...
@PursuitPerfectSystem2 жыл бұрын
After a month of listening to this with mostly music from qobuz strangely I never needed support for files above 192khz but it will play up to 1536kHz and DSD files so your first point is a moot one sorry. Then the other point your making is quoting a single spec number, its just a number it has no reflection on what a product sounds like because I tested the output where it matters i.e sound quality against other dacs of exceptional measurement and it proved that to me pretty quickly. Numbers on paper in isolation are meaningless
