I finally review the medium and large size Etchr Lab Everyday Sketchbook! Have you tried these?
I have been mentally preparing to paint the cover of my extremely fancy Etchr Labs Perfect Sketchbook in size A4 (made by ) for quite some time! I did a bunch of research and watched many videos here on KZfaq of artists painting their covers, but I couldn't quite find the answers to all of my questions. So I decided to put on my scientist hat and engage in some Art Experiments of my own right here in my studio! We will see if this cover can take Tombow Markers, Paint Pens, Watercolor, Acrylic, Gouache, and Ink! Once we test all the different materials, I PAINT MY COVER!!! If it helps Mr Gentleman doesn't look too green. At least to me, he just looks like he used the wrong foundation haha These sketchbooks do look pretty cool, if only they came in portrait!

Lolll! Definitely didn’t get the foundation undertones right. If only he had the cool makeup filters on Instagram to work with!

This was quite informative for me. I have the small one which I plan to use for WWCM. Didn't pay a bit of attention to the specs. Good to know I can use both sides. Will check with Pentalic to see if their paper is vegan. All the pictures in your smaller album are pure delight.

Aww thank you!!! I know it's not 100% cotton in the Pentalic, I honestly don't know why I loved the paper so very much. I hope the little A6 is fun! I feel like it would fit right in my pocket, so cute!!

Thoughtful review. I have an Etchr sketchbook that I have not used yet - like you I have a few sketchbooks in my supply :) I understand having paper is a good thing; apparently there is a paper shortage??? I like your green man :)

Hahahaha! There is no paper shortage in my house, but I do have that deprivation fear sometimes and want to hoard them--I need to calm down lol! 🤣😂

Aw, the puppy tongue right near the end was so cute! Very thorough review of the sketchbook - thanks for that! Loved your portrait regardless of the color. Reminded me again of the Old Man's War book series by John Scalzi. I put the Pentalic sketchbook in my wish list. My family likes to use my wish list for Christmas ideas for me, so fingers crossed. Although I need another sketchbook like I need a hole in the head, LOL! 😂 P.S. Your turtle on Instagram was so adorable!

Aww I’m so glad you liked the turtle! My parents said it looked psychedelic 😂🤣! I haven’t heard of that book series, I will have to look it up. I actually just got the 5.5x5.5 pentalic as my next travel sketchbook, I’m literally insatiable with sketchbooks, I need to be stopped! 🤗

Is the pentalic aqua journal cotton paper? I thought it was cellulose, but I have never used it.

It is not, it’s 300 gsm cold pressed watercolor paper but not cotton. I don’t know why it is such a pleasure to paint on, but I am just obsessed. It’s actually $18 on Amazon for the A5 landscape (not $24 like it was when I had last checked). I wish it came in portrait!

@@CreatingCuteArt Yes I prefer portrait as well. Its a shame some nice watercolor sketchbooks only seem to come.in landscape format.

Ooh, excellent review Maggie!! This sketchbook is next on my list to try (just as soon as I fill up my new strathmore one lol). I love what you did with the cover of yours, and it is super cool to see you use watercolor, ink, and gouache in them.

It really does take every medium beautifully (both the cold and hot press paper versions). The Strathmore is one of my absolute favorites and I have so many of them! I love the 8x10 size, it just seems like a great balance between the travel sizes I like, and these ginormous studio ones!

Happy 4th Weekend! What a nice video, loved how the paint came out, the greenish skin makes it special😁. What brushes are your favorite right now? I want to buy new ones.

For a mix of synthetic and natural hair, you really can't beat Silver Black Velvet. You could get away with just a size 8 round because it comes to such a fine point, but I splurged and own three (a teeny size two, a medium size and a fat size, I'm not home so I can't remember if it's a 6 and a 10 or an 8 and a 12), but they are all fabulous!! For synthetic, I'm obsessed with my Chelsea Paper Co Brushes! They're the ones you see on and off here with the colorful feral (sp?)!

I have a small Travel journal from Strathmore not my favorite. I am planning on buying a new sketchbook, but first I want to use my watercolor paper, I bought last year don't want it go to waste.

Yes, I am so tempted to get new sketchbooks all the time but shit it down because I have so many blanks to use first! I hope you enjoy using up the paper!!

Super fun. I like my etchr sketchbook but love my homemade Arches sketchbook. The Strathmore 500 journal is nice too. All of mine are cold press but I will make a hot press sketchbook once I finish up some of the ones I am working on now. Thanks for the fun video.

I love the Strathmore 500, too, but I've never tried a handmade sketchbook yet. How awesome that you make your own! I watch book binding and sketchbook making videos before bed to relax sometimes, it looks fun!

I’ve heard such good things about the etchr sketchbook but it’s hella costly. There’s another well known KZfaq artist who also speaks highly of the pentalic. (Oooo Meingers!) I’m always impressed with the Paul Rubens all cotton journals, but they’re limited in sizes available.

Yes the paper in the Paul Rubens is so nice! I just don't love that it doesn't lay truly flat (even when clipped it sort of has a roll off issue for super wet washes). But I love the black and pink covers and the perforated edges, too!

You made me laugh out loudly so many times in this video, thank you for this! 🤣❤️🙏 I think the colour scheme works well, though, gentleman doesn’t look sick or anything. His look is so kind and gentle, might be a panel in a graphic novel, a romance scene or something - he’s taking a glance at his love interest as they are about to get on a boat 🛶❤️ Haha, my imagination goes wild, I digress. Anyway, thanks so much for this review, it was very helpful because now I know I will not buy it anytime soon but use up what I have first and once I have I’ll rewatch this Review and decide again!

Love the review. I also have one of these sketchbooks and I’m so scared to use it! I need to get over my fear and just jump in and use it! Also have you ever tried the Hahnemuhle watercolor sketchbook? That’s the next one on my wish list and I’ve heard good things about it. Also I’ve heard arches is now starting to make sketchbooks.

I feel you, I think this one would feel too precious for me as well! I tried the Hahnemühle one and same problem there. Honestly, it’s okay in my opinion, unless they changed the paper in the last three years, I turned mine into my Swatchbook and especially when using granulating paints they don’t show as much on Hahnemühle for some reason but they look incredible on …. cheap Arteza Watercolor Sketchbook paper, haha 😆

Thanks for the review, I've been thinking about getting one of these Etchr sketchbooks but they are very pricey. I hadn't heard of the Pentalic, it looks like you can get a spiral bound version without the pen loop at Blick. It has less pages so it's less expensive, which would make it easier to try out. The Etchr books are beautiful to look at but the paper is really the key so I'll give the Pentalic a try first. Your videos are always so informative, thanks again :) Gotta try that ink background, so cool!

The ink backgrounds are so much fun to make! Let me know how the spiral bound one is, I’ve only ever tried the navy cover one (and I did just order the square version of the navy cover Pentalic on Amazon-after making this video I just needed to get one! I’m so weak when it comes to sketchbooks 😂🤣
