Nori Seaweed Sheets: amzn.to/3xBy36r
Reduced Sodium Tamari: amzn.to/36u4uaQ
Rice Vinegar: amzn.to/3e8i7R5
Sesame Oil: amzn.to/3i7oCVJ
Vitamix V1200: amzn.to/3hgHcfn
🌱 Modified Recipe:
Approx. 3 cups watermelon, cubed, with rind removed
1/4 cup Tamari (or soy sauce)
1 TBL sesame oil (you could probably sub with sesame seeds to make this oil free!)
1/2 tsp. rice vinegar
1-2 TBL nori flakes (or use 1/3 blitzed nori sheet)*
Add everything into a shallow glass tupperware and allow the watermelon to marinate for 2-3 hours. Bake at 350F for 1 - 1 1/2 hours, turning every 30 minutes (my larger pieces took 1 1/2 hours).
*Next time I would probably increase the amount of nori flakes to 2 or even 3 tablespoons to get a "fishier" taste!

Great to see you trying out new recipes. Agree with that toasted sesame oil is a tough one for whole food recipes. Toasting the sesame seeds well and then grinding them at least gives that hint of sesame flavour.

Thank you! Yes, toasted sesame seeds was the only thing I could think of as well. 😄😄 I do think it would be a decent sub here, grinding them first is a great idea. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Cool experiment! Another awesome, whole food plant (much like jackfruit) that can be substituted for a “traditional protein” and taste good, to boot. Love it!👏🤩

I'm always intrigued how people can create these alternatives out of just fruits and veggies. I would definitely try something like this if it was offered at a restaurant but I'm definitely a lazy cook at home and tend to just stick to the very basics 🙃

I love your experimental videos.... Not gonna lie this one freaked me out 😂😂😂 I was watching it while eating rock melon (or it could be cantaloupe not sure if it's the same thing. Green on the inside yellow skin 😂) and was starting to wonder if could you use any melon! 🤔🍉🍈 Thanks for sharing 💞

Hahaha YAY! I do have quite a few more "experiments" in the works, so glad to hear it. 😁 Oooooh very interesting thought about using rock melon! (I think we call that honeydew? Green on the inside is what we call honeydew melon... cantaloupe is orange on the inside!) I guess it definitely could work! I was going to say I think other melons might be too sweet, but I honestly thought watermelon would be too sweet... so why not another melon!? 😂 Not sure I'd waste a delicious rock melon to try though. 😜

Excellent video and experiment Maddie the only vegan Tuna alternative I have tried that does taste like Tuna and has the texture of Tuna is Jackfruit. I don't think I will be in a hurry to try this recipe because it's been over hyped.

I understand people wanting to replicate favorite foods from their past before becoming vegan, I did it too, but I think it is much more liberating to just enjoy good food and wonderful flavor combinations instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. This "tuna" may physically resemble the color and texture of the fish, but no way can it replicate the actual flavor. As a former seafood lover, suggesting "tuna" would only make tasting it more disappointing, whereas "watermelon sushi" would seem intriguing... or off-putting, depending on the potential taster! Thanks for sharing! I was wondering, flavor aside, was the cooked texture similar to sushi or no? I love making vegan "sushi rolls" and always looking for new fillings and textures!
@LetsEatPlants
@LetsEatPlants 3 жыл бұрын
Very good points! I actually don't mind when people try to replicate foods from their past! I quite enjoy things like mac n' cheese being as close to the "real" one as possible 😜... but I definitely get your point as well! There are some that just shouldn't be called by it those former names. I think this is one of those instances! 😅 I actually thought the texture was quite good, very soft and kind of slimy (sorry to use that word, but it's true! 😂), but Q quickly pointed out there isn't really any "chew" to it, which a normal tuna would have. But I added it to my rolls when I had it with dinner last night, and I thought it was a pretty good addition! Probably wouldn't go out of my way to make it again.. but if I ever have leftover watermelon to use up, I could see myself making it again. 😁
@CharGC123
@CharGC123 3 жыл бұрын
@@LetsEatPlants Thanks! LOL "slimy" is a funny word... but honestly, since I love oats, okra, nopales, and even natto, I guess I'm a fan? Speaking of natto, since it's so easy to make in the Instant pot with the yogurt setting, and has a definite, strong, cheesy funk, I've been playing around using it in plant based cheeses...very interesting! Depending on the other ingredients it can "suggest" some stronger cheeses like brie/camembert, which I used to love. I blended some into a white sweet potato cheezy sauce last night and it tasted amazingly like melted swiss! Future funky flavorful fermentation fun? 😝

@@CharGC123 Hahaha omg yes, so many slimy foods that are actually quite yummy! 😅 I really have to try your natto in the instant pot!! I have heard using it for cheeze flavor is amazing!!! There is a fermented tofu sold at most Asian stores that is similar in “funk” that many people use for vegan cheeses.. and I’m thinking natto will be the same! Time to study I guess. 😛 Did you follow a recipe to start?

I had it in wagamama (uk) and it was REVOLTING … The way you made it looks sensational, but it must have zero nutritional benefits?! I would rather have tofu marinated in beetroot juice for a bit of pinkness?? Butttt it did look good 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
@LetsEatPlants
@LetsEatPlants 3 жыл бұрын
Hahhaha wow! Revolting is a strong word! 😂😂 Anad Wagamama is supposed to be great! Very surprised by that. Yes.. definitely agree about the nutritional benefits. You would be better off using tofu for those reasons.. but the texture of this *is* pretty similar to tuna (minus the "chewiness"!). I've seen a few tofu "fish" recipes that look pretty legit. May have to try one of those next. 😜
