It's not like EU grant membership to "send a message to Russia". You need to show that you meet certain standards to be granted membership

Georgian wars and the conflict in Ukriane are a result of the plans of NATO and EU for inporporation of those counties. There is (and was) no democratic will for it without the massive funding for NGOs in those coutries from the west to fuel those hopes. Like it is somehow normal that half the US congress and their families has buisseness ties in Ukraine. Russia cannot, geopolitically, let that happen. You are right that it's a purely geopolitical play of the EU to expand their borders. And like with a lot of the balkan countries, the standards that should be met are but a formal apeasement for current citizens and are ignored the moment it's against other interests.

Big mistakes there: 1. Georgia is not trying to be neutral. not being in active war against Russia does not mean it's neutral. In the same way, you can say the whole world is neutral including the USA. 2. Georgia is participating in every international sanction imposed by the USA, EU, and GB. it simply does not impose additional sanctions.

Shoulnd there be a cultural common ground for being in the EU? There already is tension with Poland and Hungary - and Georgia is even further out. I feel like those countries might not really be compatible with the EU goal .. unless the EU wants to become parallel NATO pact? edit: with that said - how exactly do Georgians (no, not the progressive ones - but the crust, the majority) feel about - LGBTQ+ - Abortion rights - social accountability - the willingness to support other member states - the willingness to take on a burden to relief other member states - a modern justice system with CLEAR separation of power - a strict and modern anti corruption scheme - the utmost adherence to international law and i can list other items from the aims and charter of the EU. Now - i would not say that other, bigger and more established countries satisfy those items (because that would be naive) - but in most western European countries there is a good understanding of it .. even if you have the occasional fascists turn up like Front National, Sweden Democrats or whatever Mussolini copy/paste garbage pops up in Italy all the time.

No offence intended.
@markheithaus

Poland seems to be doing its part fairly well. Cooperatively nationalistic. It fascinates me. I think of Estonia, where I spent a lot of time. A lot of Americans look at Europe and the European Union as a sort of post national Utopia, and are throwing their Facebook pictures behind Ukraine without realizing that a lot of Eastern Europe is in the EU because of nationalism. The history between Ukraine and Poland isn't all hugs and kisses, which makes it nice to see how much Poland is trying to help. It was the first, I believe, to diplomatically recognize an independent Ukraine and Lithuania. I know there are other issues, but Eastern Europe definitely has its own perspective. It strikes me how poorly Americans, a lot of Europeans and even Russians don't really know the messy history of Eastern Europe very well. One fascinating tidbit I always throw out there is how differently we conceptualize World War I. Here in America November 11th is veterans Day, as a way to remember those who died... and basically the pointlessness of World War I. In Poland, it's Independence Day. World War I didn't solve everything, and it was horrifically violent, but it was an opportunity. 1939 wasn't just about how Germany was treated. 1939 was about the collapse of empires, movement of peoples, and the reassessing of the rights of people to be nations. Of course, Poland wasn't entirely innocent. But for me that's another important thing about the European Union. It's not just formed from a struggle with nationalism, but also from a struggle for nations to exist. There's a lot of complexity in balancing that. Fascinating to me. Utterly fascinating.

integration, centralisation and cooperation lead to efficiency. Imagine a time where countries did not yet exist. Now imagine how inefficient their societies were. With centralisation an entity gains efficiency. Yes, not everything may be perfect but a system doesn't need to be. USA is one of the most prosperous countries in the world yet there are many flaws in their system. The EU is the same. Being bigger, being able to pull more levers increases control over a society which in turn increases its efficiency. This allows an entity to prosper. Imagine how destructive it would be if all states of the USA would decide to not be the USA anymore. They would be 50 small countries, leading to a horrific loss of efficiency.. think trade barriers, war, many different types of territorial disputes and lack of cooperation. Things naturally expand as they do well. Its one of natures laws.

Serbia does not have any territorial dispute with Kosovo. And territorial disputes does not have anything to do with getting EU membership because territorial disputes apply only to getting NATO membership

Indeed, because Kosovo isnt a country, you cant have a territorial dispute with your occupied province.

It's a stunning indictment of how bad things must be in Georgia if the likes of Albania and Ukraine can be accepted, but Georgia rejected! Sounds like even South Ossetia would have a better chance of gaining admission to EU (the bar is set so astoundingly low these days).

@DolphinsWIthIgloos accepted as a candidate nation, but it amounts to the same thing for Ukraine. no one will have the guts to vote against the most corrupt country in Europe being fast tracked and admitted.

@Elena D no one is arguing that corruption doesn't exist in some countries, but we all know it exists to a lot greater extent in some countries rather than others. I don't know where Russia and Ukraine are in the "Corruption Table" but I know Russia is not a candidate nation for the EU, but Ukraine is, so from a European perspective, it's Ukrainian corruption that must be scrutinized.

@DolphinsWIthIgloos i disagree. i don't think saint zelensky or his successor will have to do any cleanup. with "Russia bad, Ukraine good" as the narrative of the West, Ukraine will be admitted no problem. just like Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest, a political decision, no questions asked. we'll see.

Albania is in a much better state than both Ukraine and Georgia. It’s far ahead in judicial and political reforms required by EU. It’s GDP per capita is more than double , it’s already a reliable NATO member, and geographically is surrounded by EU and most importantly, doesn’t have any territorial issues with its neighbors. Having said that though, i wish good luck to both Ukraine and Georgia in their process of joining NATO and EU. As a NATO member Albania already supports their accession to the alliance.
