Today we're answering your question about whether or not I would buy a Ford F250 all over again, and giving a 3 year review of our work truck. I have gotten a ton of folks asking to share some updates on the truck now that we've had it for a little while and share how it's held up.
I tried to answer as many questions as I could regarding the truck that were submitted from you guys on Instagram. I tried to cover the popular questions like "gas vs diesel", "Lariat vs WT", "Ford vs another brand", so on and so forth.
Let me know if this 3 year review helped you guys out at all with helping you make your next truck purchase. I gotta say, I'm incredibly happy with the truck and I don't really think there's anything I'd change about it. It has honestly been a great work horse and hasn't had any major issues so far, knock on wood!
Don’t forget to check out Part 2! 20 more questions you asked on the F250!

The water in the door is supposed to happen, it’s a drain field to keep water from leaking into the cab. If it leaks like that it is clogged, take an air compressor and blow it through the holes. That’s what the dealer would do.

@LWRC not huge, the Linex is a little bit thicker but not much. When you get Linex installed the also pull every bolt out of the box, in case you ever need to take the bed off for any given reason. With Ford you get a cool ford logo etched into the front of the box, in the end Linex is probably better but if ford is cheaper go with that, there isn’t much difference

In regard to diesel vs gas, it’s important to remember that when a modern diesel truck goes into the shop, you usually aren’t leaving without paying a few thousand dollars. Most modern diesel trucks regularly require body off frame repairs and that’s gets really expensive.

I got a 19 diesel with the sport package. I’ve hauled everything including cattle. Yeah the diesel is overkill but my FNL has a gas version and pulls the same stuff as I do with no problem. What I hate about my truck is the sport package has blacked out head lights. Will eventually upgrade to LEDs for it. Nice truck was my dream truck and when you and Liz picked yours up and your comment as you walked to the truck was motivational. Then I finally got mine after a lot of contemplating.

Great video, Brian! I’ve ran a 2500 Dodge gas for the past four years. I bought that over a 1500 for the added “beefiness” of the frame and better brakes for hauling bigger loads. I’ve been happy with it and for hauling equipment to landscape jobs, it’s nice to have the better stopping power.

some basic tips for keeping your truck out of the shop.. 1. with most vehicles shipping from the factory with synthetic oil. change it every 5,000, if you idle a lot change it every 3,000. also pay extra for the nicer oil filters, i run the purolator boss filter(advance auto). before every oil change put a bottle of lucas oil fuel system cleaner. 2. rotate your tires EVERY oil change, you can prolong the life of your tires 5,000+ miles by doing this. i run the tires in my 08 ranger at 40 pounds. every application is different but always run a few ponds higher than oem spec, lawn care guys are running heavier having a higher pressure in a tire will keep the tire from over heating. so be prepared when you go to tire shops wanting higher pressures they will fight you. every operation is different so find what works best for you. also find a tire store that runs nitrogen, with nitrogen if you get a nail, or road trash in your tire(s) they don’t go flat within a hour. 3. if you pull heavy on the regular like brian does cage your fuel filter every year in spring, & spin money on the good spark plugs i run NGK. now a lot of people will disagree with this but, at the end of winter every year change the trans fluid (if you pull heavy very day 10-12 hours a day). drop the pan, clean it out, change the filter, fill from the top. when you do this start your truck let idle for 15 minutes, then apply brakes shift to each gear (DO NOT DRIVE YET) hold in each gear for 3 minutes this allows the ban to apply the clutch, & gets trans fluid to hat part of the transmission. after this let your truck idle for another 10 minutes, now take it on a 30 mile drive. DO NOT LET A DEALER run the trans fluid through a machine some models the transmission will grenade if this is done. finally if you buy a new truck at 800 miles drop the oil, & trans fluid changes all filters including fuel. hauling automotive parts for the last few years the quality control isn’t there, because they are “slapping” things together. the older generation that took pride in building these components have been pushed out. plus some of these vehicles sit for 4-8 months in a storage lot before a dealer may take delivery of them. it’s a small price to pay but if you do have a warranty issue and do what i mentioned above it’s going to be pretty hard for them to deny the warranty claim. keep ALL maintenance records, have them organized in order by date, folder them by each year quarterly, example 2nd quarter 2020, 3rd quarter 2020. you walk into a dealer, with your maintenance records by a yearly quarter will them neat, & organized they will not fuck with you (lack of better term). if y’all need more detail from what i wrote here, just reach out.

The problem with a Diesel engine is the cost of repair. My RAM is almost 18 years old and in the past year I had to spend $10,000 in total repairs which includes both engine and suspension. It was worth it because I spend 250-500 miles per day on the road working my inspection business. Cummins engines are well worth it if you plan on keeping your truck for years and years.

I think you're absolutely right as far as diesel vs gas. My diesel truck is a toy hauler on the weekends and i really enjoy how effortless it is to tow but if it was purely a money maker truck, you could put 2 engines in the gas truck before you do injectors in the diesel cost wise. Also most people will never offset the cost of diesel.

My experience and thoughts for any owner/operator thinking of a new Ford superduty: I bought mine with the diesel 3 years ago and for the first year or two really did enjoy it. 2017, brand new, 6.7L F250 SuperCab/XLT. However since they've come out with the 7.3L gas option I've been leaning more towards that for a future truck. The diesel is great and all but that gas 7.3 seems like a simple, reliable "old school" v8 and for the price I'd for sure get it next time around. At the time when I got mine the Ford promotion going on was a 10k discount off MSRP for diesel engines, so it made sense (XLT premium package with heated seats, same centre screen/nav as lariat, centre console). Nice truck. Ended up upgrading my headlights to AlphaRex LEDs (like 1000 and installed myself), and LED taillights. The only real difference now is between mine and a Lariat is no leather seats. But yeah, looking back I'd wait for ford to have a different promo to get 10k off MSRP on a gas truck and trade the diesel engine for a 7.3 gas and get the lariat with cooled seats, LEDs. I'd also probably go with an 8 ft bed instead of the 6.75 ft bed for a work truck. I got the "super cab" and short bed so that the truck would be better for plowing, but I haven't actually really used it much for snow removal. My previous truck was a regular cab with 8 ft bed and it was much more useful. Once you've got a toolbox in there, or fuel tank, there's just not much room for anything else. I'd probably also go with the F350 for the extra payload for anyone who plans on keeping tools/ equipment in the truck and also tow with it. (I'm in landscaping/asphalt - repair, sealing, light paving. I've hauled bobcat/ mini ex/ asphalt roller on a float trailer with this truck, 14-15k lbs dump trailers fully loaded. fully loaded enclosed trailers)

Completely with you on the nicer trim. I use my truck for work (way smaller than most guys, as I only have 40ish accounts), but I also use it for everyday life too. If I’m gonna be in it all day, I appreciate the creature comforts. The technology package, the heated and cooled seats (here in Texas they’re for the summer no doubt. Nice to hop in after knocking out a complete cul-de-sac and cranking up Max AC and the cooled seats) the Max tow package, and one thing I didn’t anticipate enjoying - the panoramic moon roof. Coming from a F250 it took a minute to convince myself I could get it done with a half ton gas truck, but the 3.5 Ecoboost is a monster. Pulls my 17 foot enclosed trailer like it’s not there and having a newer truck with the integrated brake controller is a godsend.

Loved the video .... The way you answered and explained why you chose this over that .... from an owner operator position and based on your current size of operation and projected size ..... makes perfect sense. We run all gas which, like yourself, is fine for the size we are and what we do. Now, if we were larger and bulling skid steers and mini track loaders .... maybe a diesel would be warranted. Keep making the dreamwork and don't stop the videos, love your stuff. (FP2 is awesome as well ) Merry Christmas to you and the wifey.

Hi there!! Congrats on the 3 years of you your truck! Wow...I remember watching your video when you first got your truck. I was overseas and planning to get a truck the following year. This is awesome that your current truck has worked out and you haven't had any sizable issues! We are in the market for another truck. This one will be for travel trailer pulling. Because we're done getting trucks for each need, I think we'll head towards a 1ton; most likely an F350, so as to never have a payload issue. To help mitigate costs, I'll probably do a well equipped xlt gasser. We live in the mountains in CO (many many folks will argue for a diesel then; but I've rented F250 6.2gassers to haul stuff through the mountains and they did fine), so I'll probably get a 4.30 gearing to help with the hills. Have an awesome winter!!

Good review. Very informative as always. Personally we are switching from fords to the new rams. Also switching from diesel to gas as well. We dont haul more than 8k lbs so a diesel isnt really necessary for us anymore and as you stated for the price difference with gas vs diesel we can have nicer trucks and just stay gas. Plus easier for us to work on versus a diesel that would need a shop to fix it.

I was impressed enough I bought a 2020 F250 for my personal truck. I have seen transmission failures in Chevy's 2500 and 3500. But I dont blame the maker. Ford Super Duty from when they started the new series back in 99 and before that XLT F250 / 350 trucks . Since they did away with the 5.4 no need for the diesel the new V8 has all the power needed and less motor maintenance . 38 years in the plowing business and other than a Dodge diesel the rest have been Super Duty Fords and that’s all we run currently...can’t see me changing brands now . Great review...👍👍

Like the videos. I too bought a 2016 F250 with the 6.2 V8. Most guys don't need diesel trucks, but get sucked into the "cool" factor. I also agree, the only reason I bought the Super Duty because we plow and sometimes need to pull 8-10k trailers. I have a 2012 F150 2wd and it is my go to driver, and tows 75% of what I need. I use the 250 when I need to haul our skid steer or dump trailer. While the 150 is rated to tow them, it isn't what I would call happy about doing it. Much more comfortable towing heavy loads in the bigger truck. Very happy with both trucks overall. Keep up the good work!

Bro for what you are doing for a living, there is no reason for a diesel, none. That almost 10 grand can work for you and can go to a new mower. It is quieter and cheaper on maintenance with gas as opposed to maintenance for diesel. Like you said, the new half-ton trucks with a v8 can haul a lot more than usual but with plowing the 250 is the way to go even though I am not a ford guy.

Great video Brian, agree completely with the tow hook issue. Upgraded from a 2000 Ford f150 to a 2017 f250 this year. Red Xl trim and regular cab as I'm a solo operator so needed the long bed not the extra seats. Crazy good deal at around 27k with only 12k miles on it. Even got the certified pre owned warranty. It came with a ceramic coating the previous owner installed. It's been a huge game changer when it comes to cleaning the truck. Debris and dirt just come right off when it rains as everything just beads off. Would be worth looking into.

I have essentially the same model truck - 2017 Lariat 50k miles. I’ve also had zero issues (knock on wood). I remember when you bought this truck because it was a couple weeks before I bought mine. Glad to see you’re still liking it, as I am. I also don’t like the sync system, my advice is plug your iPhone in and use Apple Car Play which works flawlessly. You’re missing out on the Google Maps features and a seamless entertainment system with your iPhone.

I have a 2019 Ram 3500 with the High Output Cummins. I use it for lawn and landscape. Just bought a 2017 F250 gasser to dedicate it to my lawn business as the start/stop of my Diesel engine is wearing it out. Been using the F250 lately though as the Ram got hit in the front so I can’t drive it. No regrets so far with either truck 😊

where the diesel comes in handy is like louisville, ky there’s a ton of rollers, & steep short inclines. but where brian is at in michigan, i mean it’s pretty flat up there. plus on this generation of super duty the powerstroke was only getting 12-15 mph. that’s why ford did a redesign for 2020 too improve on this new turbo, injectors, & the 10 speed. let me tell you if brian is getting 14 mpg out of the 6.2 that’s the best number i’ve herd, & i live 4 miles from the ford truck plant. i talk to the engineers all the time at the gas station across from the plant.

Even the sales rep said he has never seen an xl anywhere close to loaded as this .. my only guess is that someone dealer ordered it and decided not to buy it . Msrp $47, got it for $39. 2 years now .. everywhere I go , people ask me how I got a power window in a basic xl... I say idk!! Lol

Down here in Texas, i will say 90% of even owner operators use F250, 2500, your basic 3/4 ton diesels. It may simply be because diesels are all the rave here in the south. But personally having owned a f250 diesel, I would take diesel every time. just personal preference. But I completely agree that its all relative to what you need and what is best for your business. Great video and your work rig is cleannnn. Great choice! Keep up the great contact

I have a 2018 F150 King Ranch with the Diesel engine and have towed 11,300lbs and had no problems. It pulls like a dream. Yes I spent $70k on it but I intend to keep it for my lifetime no matter what. But it does everything I could ask of it and then some. I get roughly 20 mpg combined including towing. I tow during the mowing season roughly 5k daily. Never had a concern with getting moving or stopping either. Towing a 11k lbs trailer it gets about 10 mpg.

I respect your choice to drive the gas. With that said, the best choice for your business is putting the extra cash into the Diesel. I spent over a decade managing car dealerships and previously I worked the fleet department before the promotion. Now, I owner operate a roofing business. Put pen to paper between fuel, purchase price, length of ownership and tax saving. The truck is a tool. Business is managing your capital expenditures and maximizing your profitability while not compromising customer service so you can scale to your level of comfort. As for the capital expense (truck) ideally get to a place where you can trade every year, going with the diesel will require more upfront liquidity but you roll one into the next taking advantage of taxes paid the first time, you have 3 write offs. The miles, the truck it self (must be within federal weight requirements) and the depreciation if any. You mentioned A plan. Side note: always buy the 4x4 even if your allergic to dirt. Lol if will add to the initial cap Expense but will be vital for this plan to work. The 4x4 retains value around 17% better even more on some models. Now step back: can you scrape together money to get that truck for your business and you mentioned it is changed it and excelled it tremendously. The strategy I’m telling you will allow you to steam roll that for as long as you have the business. I know you’re an owner operator but at the end of the day the truck is a tool. Using the truck to trade in ideally before each year so you can claim it on your tax if not every two years maintaining low miles on a diesel 4 x 4 that you bought at a plan pricing you’ll have the ability to resell it for more than you paid using that timeline. You also will retain that it will give me a feeling of having a nice new truck for your business, your customers will see you in a nice new truck and it will represent your business very well there has to be a value assigned to that to what we can’t pinpoint exactly however a landscaper showing up in a nice new truck can come in the higher price then the guy that’s pulling up in a 20 year old Beater that leaks oil in his driveway. Remember I know you get excited when you purchase a vehicle I do the same thing everybody does. The smartest way to go about it is purchase the truck that has the highest residual value meaning highest resell drive it for the shortest period of time at least close to a year. And every time you go in for an oil change and they offered to buy it let them appraise it the preowned market and appraisal values are no different than the stock market they go up and down. In addition the manager overseeing these appraisals will notice hey we’ve looked at this guys truck three times And we still haven’t sold them a truck let’s see if we throw a couple extra grand to the deal maybe we can sell a car today. That’s their thought process plus what else are you doing while you’re getting it all change. It may take an extra 10 minutes maybe 20 gives you plenty of time to pass up business cards to make conversation with the coffee machine with everybody possible Promoting your business in one way or another. We’ve all had those simple conversations that get struck up at AutoZone Walmart wherever the next thing you know they ask for a business card and week or two later you’re doing the job for them. I’m getting off track, the point being numbers don’t lie and understanding business takes a little bit of learning, losing and experience doing both and experiencing what led to the result of the two outcomes. Buying the diesel 4 x 4 I would imagine the cheapest lariat for the middle of the road XLT diesel are going to have the highest residual values so that would be more than the trucks I would buy. Being a business expense the initial cost shouldn’t scare you. Anything you do for your business you should already have it mapped out with an exit strategy. My exit strategy would be to trade it or sell it at the right times with the goal of breaking even or at the very worst losing five or six grand, and getting a new truck taking a vantage of the tax incentive to offset the loss depreciation and now I have a brand new billboard to represent my business, also have a boost in confidence because I just bought a new truck so everybody knows how that feels #Great!YouDon’tHave toBuyTires,YouDon’tHave toDoBrakes.TheRealityIsWithThatStrategyYouNeverHave toPayForAnyMaintenanceOtherThan an oil Change. BecauseItWillBeUnderWarrantyUntilYouSellIt Best of luck to you and your growing business I hope 2023 is a year of expansion and growth and filled with blessings you and your family deserve! Perhaps new home🤔😎

I would have to go with the Chevy or GMC 2500 Duramax diesel works good towing and the torque and horsepower for pushing heavy snow that we get there in Wisconsin and also gas mileage is better with diesel! I only pay about $3 when I wash my truck in my driveway I use my Stihl power washer I do have to turn down the PSI on it or it will take the paint off my truck and I save a lot of money be using my stuff in my driveway and using a Stihl backpack leaf blower to dry it off always works for me!

Good review! Just bought an end of year sale 2020 F250 XLT Supercab with the 7.3L gasoline engine-has a 4.3 rear axle...Wow! All I can say is overkill, but that's how we lawn guys like it! No way do you need a diesel with the Godzilla motor. Brain, the newer edition Sync & features don't give me any issues that I notice...phone connects without blinking. This is my 4th Super Duty purchased since 2014...rarely had any issues. The 6.2L motors are more than solid, especially plowing snow. I also have a 2019 F350 6.2L standard cab and love it! Use it mainly for work truck hauling equipment & for salting purposes. The newer editions are just nice to drive & sit in for hours per day/week. Btw, my new truck was $51K before discounts & Z plan...ended up after taxes, destination...blah blah out the door for $48K. Throw on the BOSS V XT from Weingartz & total price was 59K.
