AI's are already writing books, and they are now also writing journal articles. So, eventually, you are going to be reading something written by an AI either willingly or unwillingly. Which led me to consider whether I in fact want to read anything written by an AI or not. Here's my take.

We have an example of chess, where AI has been vastly better any human player for decades. Yet people are still more interested in watching matches between humans. Yeah, watching Alfa Zero crush Stockfish with some insane idea is fun, but still there is something about us that makes us mostly interested in each other. I cannot imagine myself being interested in anything AI can compile.

Chess doesn't fit one to one. But it is a good case study, I agree. I think digital artists are a better case study. From what I have heard from them, many got ruined by Dalle. Would be interesting to see an economist look at the revenues of digital artists before generative AI and after. With chess, I would sooner buy AI textbook on chess (or just read its analysis of my games) than buy books written by GMs. ASSUMING, of course, that my purpose is to learn the BEST possible strategies and ideas, not just the style of some specific GM.

Should also add, I am not talking about ChatGPT, I have in mind an embodied AGI. At which point, I would almost never consult a human for basically anything. I don't think ChatGPT does it for me.

@@IdeasInHat that would be cool. Although it seems like we are always one breakthrough behind what we really want XD. Do you have the same feeling? As soon as we got chatgpt, we got used to it withing a year, and now everyone is waiting for embodied AGI. I am waiting for a day when we'll be able to create AAA videogames or even movies just by ourselves, as "simple" as writing a book. But then I thought, if I can create a videogame with the help of AI, what will a huge company be able to do with a same tool and thousands of trained employees. Anything I create will be on a tetris level compared to what they can do XD.

@@antun88 I agree. I hope AI eventually becomes like Jarvis, and we can not worry about silly mistakes. ChatGPT is pretty good. I am glad to have it. But yeah, I would like something better. I really have no clue what the future will look like when it comes to AI. Will there be one ultra energy consuming singular AI? Will there be many small, different AIs? I have no clue. Haha. I am satisfied with what we have though, for now. Chess.com is a blast, and ChatGPT is a game changer for studying forumlas and learning languages.

How would you describe being able to remain curious about AI and not be terrified or disgusted by it? I can't help but be disturbed by the idea that AI could replace human art, even if it would lead to higher standards. Maybe that's just human hybris speaking, but I figured that anything written by AI, for example, couldn't have the same value to me. And a world where the vast majority of creative work is done by AI would be the greatest distopian. I wonder what you think about that.

I get the perspective, and that is why I would still read culturally significant works done by humans, like histories by Herodotus. But for general information reading, I would use AI. Same is true for art. No AI will replace the mona lisa. And there will be other impressive human artists who come that we will appreciate. I view AI as only allowing the truly magnificent to participate in making money off their works. AI increases the overall demand for skill to stand out. No one will want a haphazardly written book because an AI can make a better one quicker and cheaper. But when humans reach that maximal level of skill, that will always be impressive and worthy of money. And only those people will be able to monetize their craft.

@@IdeasInHat I see, so Ai would be an asset, that serves the idea of the improvement of the human arts, and as well the non-biased productions of non-fiction, but in the end, it couldn't replicate or, better, surpas the human abilitys in perfection, so there would be always be a reason to compete with this System. I never thought about that in this way, thank you very much for this perspective.

Feed all of Dickens into a computer and ask AI to write a new Dickens novel. It would be interesting to see what comes out. It might even be fun to have AI finish his unfinished novel, "The Mystery of Edwin Drood". Perhaps in the AI novel, Mr. Pickwick will marry Little Dorrit?

AI can't hold together plot points correctly, so there's that. This is NOT a move forward. Why anything after 2023 is no longer readable in my opinion. I'm now reading periods before that point but very careful of anything after. Disgusting what AI has done to writing. Also, you say it's intelligent. No, it's just plagiarizing things carefully and rewriting it. It's like the dumb kid in school that copies the smart kid that actually wrote it but doesn't really know anything. It always chooses the most common denominator answer...that means NOT thinking outside the box. Let me tell you, the books that really inspire are something different. They rehash the same concepts and AI is not capable of originality because of the basis it was built on (Plagiarism). AI cannot do anything original because all it does is copies things. As a writer, I've cried many times since this technology came out. How does that sound to you like there's no longer anything special about any single writer. Everything is now robotically the same because we've allowed it. Dostoevsky, special for his psychological writing, is no longer any different from Haruki Murakami, special for his dreamy scenes...everything is the same now. I hate it with the same passion that the KKK holds for...
should you read?
