Well, we pay taxes to support their training, and to be available for service. They really shouldn't do unnecessarily risky things like that in case the plane hits an air pocket or something.

@@ElwynR I was assigned to the 353 SOG in Okinawa Japan flying MC130 H and Ps. We has a spouse's orientation one year (around 2004) where we took the spouses up and let them do just that. They were shittin' bricks. Ha!

@@3orion33 5 point harness tied off back in the cargo bay, (you can see the black straps with buckles especially on the two furthest to the right), plus a cargo strap, the white one across their laps, to give them a handhold and keep them from 'bouncing' if they hit any turbulence. The harness is a commonly used system for personnel to use when having to move around in the bay during flight especially when doors or cargo ramps are open during deploying paratroopers or para/airdropping cargo from the back in flight.

Those guys are like me on a park bench on a nice summer day.

Dispatchers harness is all I had sitting on the ramp of a Chinnook. Just a waist belt and strap connected to a tie down ring on the floor! I waved to the sunbathers as we flew at around 400 ft over the Netherlands en route for RAF Gutersloh.
