Ah here, The National Ocean Service says oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/oceanorsea.html (I don't mean this as a stupid nitpick. The if the name was too be perfectly literarily and accurate Skyscrapers don't scrape the sky. :P I was actually cirius what the difference is.) Hmm since a lot of these concepts seem to be close to land, what about shoresrapers for shallow water and seasrapers for deep? (I feel like im misspelling scraper...)

The brine produced from the desalination process to provide water for ~20,000 people (or even a small fraction of that population) would be a serious issue we'd need to resolve. I see no reason these structures would need to be completely independent of land resources, especially for electricity, food, and water. In a slightly less hostile world, compact nuclear fission reactors, such as a scaled up version of NASA's Kilopower would give these structures all the power they need with minimal impact on the surrounding environment. It's a fantastic idea, and perhaps some decent period of time after I became very comfortable trusting the structure not to crack and drown me in my sleep, I'd love a floor to ceiling window in my living room with whales and jellyfish roaming around.
@akselhansen304
@akselhansen304 5 жыл бұрын
dont see how desalination would ever be an issue take the removed salt and ad it to the cleaned waste water before pumping it back out or even better just keep recycling the waste water that way only a little desalination would be needed to top of the system

While I love the sci-fi-esque concept, we have more than enough room on land already for people to live - we just don't use it very well. What would be nice is to see a lot of the concepts proposed for these ocean scrapers (and earthscrapers too, for that matter) incorporated into skyscrapers. Alas, in the US at least every time we get hit by a hurricane, we simply rebuild the same weather-inadequate buildings in the same place. An oceanscraper would make so much more sense to replace beachfront properties.

Yes, we have space on land to build, but I would be ecologically smarter if we started only living on ocean or deserts. Why?! On deserts we can't plant crops, and with government incentive we could slowly turn the deserts surrounding us into oasis and later on forests. I don't like that much the idea of living on the ocean... Floating... Imagine how a tornado could mess with a floating structure. But still, living on ocean and deserts would leave fertile soils both for plantations and forests to grow.

The economics for these are very likely not going to happen. Compare the price of yachts to decent homes on land, the yachts come in at 10x or 100x on a square-foot basis. Compare a pre-fab oceanscraper to a custom-built mansion still favors the mansion simply because the oceanscraper will need to be built more robustly against water corrosion and weather. Heating-cooling: water is a very potent conductor of heat and stores a tremendous amount of heat energy. Oceanscrapers will need to locate where the sea water remains fairly close to room temperature or wind up expending huge amounts of energy to keep its interior space at a liveable temperature. Not impossible, of course, but it reduces the potential real estate where these can be located.

Tbh building it on this scale currently seems pretty unrealistic. Even smaller versions will mostly be luxurious projects for the ultra rich. Of course property at the water is worth a lot, being submerged and able to see the sea life is amazing. However, going down a 1000 meters, the water pressure will be extremely high. It will need much much more construction materials to withstand those pressures. Also large glass panels will only be possible higher up. Not to mention that it hasn't been tested for dangers of marine wildlife crashing into it, like birds fly into windows, imagine whales swimming into those glass panels or structures, or other large objects floating in sea, as well as storms, currents etc. Also harvesting fresh water from salt water is extremely difficult/inefficient. Nonetheless, building this on a much smaller scale on a hotel form, i'm sure the ultra rich are willing to pay for it. More as a gimmick though.

Hey B1M, from your recent posts I get that you are after flashy-yet-interesting subjects to get the likes and subscriptions. But there are also other interesting subjects that are more relevant for the world and that do not focus only on the top 1% of the population who would be the only ones able to afford living in a super skinny skyscraper, an ocean scraper or in a man made beach in Monaco. Here are some suggestions: Architectural and engineering concepts to deal with the lack of housing for the displaced populations due to war, famine or natural disasters. Natural material construction, including rammed earth, adobe and bamboo & the self-constructed urban slums that are rapidly growing on the booming cities on the equator; how will cities develop the infrastructure needed to cope with the demand? I like your videos but I liked them more at the beginning when they were less fantasy and more rooted-yet-visionary.

As beautiful as it is, unless we can find a material as advertised (3D printed material from algae and plastic and all that transparent material nonsense) that can withstand at the very least 200-500 tonnes/m2 of hydrostatic pressure and more from current, for now and maybe next couple decades it'll all be bulky concrete structures m8.... Or something similar to a submarine...

Its a fascinating idea but it requires two things to really work: cheap convenient transportation to the mainland, and an economic engine (not "research," but some kind of industry best suited to being in the sea)

Ideas for "oceanscrapers" are being floated. Nice pun! Creating future wonders from plastic waste is a beautiful thing.

I'm surprised you didn't address the underwater pressure issue. The pressures in such depths are enormous. You're talking about military submarines depths. The engineering of such structures would be ridiculous IMHO.

Jan Krizansky exactly the glass would be hella expensive for it to withstand such pressure

They don't adress anything here, they just read a advertising for a stupid project of a dumb designer that they found online. No reflexion at all on the feasibility or the impact or whatever.

Ocean scrapers will not work simly because the weight of sealife that grows on them will weigh them down.
