In a new interview, Bruce Willis’ wife Emma has spoken candidly about his dementia diagnosis, and how what she calls a ‘family disease’ has been affecting their home and family life. She admitted it’s ‘hard to know’ if he’s aware of his illness, and that she decided to clearly explain the diagnosis to their daughters to avoid them feeling embarrassed or stigmatised. But would you tell a loved one they had dementia, or keep them in the dark? And have there ever been times where you felt ashamed or embarrassed by a family member’s illness? This resonates deeply with both Coleen and Ruth.

We had business cards made for the family to quietly pass put to strangers, servers, etc., saying "thank you for your patience, our father has Alzheimer's "

I think they need to know. It's frightening when they know some is happening but the dont know what. Not accepting it is one thing but not knowing is another

This would apply only to someone at the very early stages though because once their memory declines, they wouldn't remember what it was anyway.

Winnie Wallace...Telling someone they've got dementia makes no difference to how they behave. You would have to tell my father-in-law every day and it wouldn't have made one jot of difference to his understanding of what was going on.

Try and be forewarned. It is very hard. I am told their are Facebook groups that are really helpful. I find the time and energy it takes utterly exhausting. I’m sad, angry, frightened. You grieve for the loss of so much. Please make sure you take care of yourself.

No. We didn't tell my grandad. He knew he was forgetful we used to just say its your old age. Was too far gone by the time we found out anyway. He had had it years. If was early stages probs would of. Would forget anyway

Whats the point of telling them as very soon after they've forgotten everything you said. My mum had vascular dementia and forgot any conversation in minutes if not immediately.

Please use the correct terminology ladies! It’s ‘living with dementia’ not ‘dementia sufferers’ Great that you are highlighting it - thank you.

A shocking concept to grasp but even people with an illness have rights and everyone has the right to know their medical status. Family don't get to withhold information because it's easier for them, this is the right of the person affected.

The sunflower lanyard works well for Autism and such; something like that for Dementia sufferers may help too? Or are the lanyards already including of Dementia? Much better than a flipping Tshirt 😂

What is this madness? It doesn't matter if you tell them or not - they forget. Does everyone on the panel have dementia?
