Song: Bring Me To Life - Evanescence. This is one of several reedited videoclips accompanying Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling's new book 'The Horse Seeks Me'.
This video describes important parts of the fundamental work of the horse therapist Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling. For a better and correct understanding and to avoid misunderstandings, it is important to connect the shown video with his background, which we are adding in the following lines:
Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling continues shaking up equestrians all over the world, with response in all fields like natural horsemanship, horse whispering, classical and freestyle dressage, equestrian sports, western riding, endurance and eventing. He is at the forefront of new ideas on working and interacting with horses and is known for amazing groundwork with breeding stallions, considering their special potential and necessities. He considers the horse's psyche and communicates via body language with these beautiful creatures. His first book, 'Dancing with Horses' met with overwhelming international success, especially in pleasure riding and natural riding.
One of the newest publications with huge impact is The Path of The Horse by Stormy May, where Hempfling is portrayed together with Alexander Nevzorov, Mark Rashid, Linda Kohanov and Carolyn Resnick.
One of his specialties is the work with difficult horses he transforms dangerous, nervous, traumatized horses into cooperative companions. They recognize him as their leader, and become willing partners in groundwork and under saddle.
With a handful of known names like Monty Roberts and Pat Parelli (who are inspired by the work of Tom and Bill Dorrance, Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, John Lyons) KFH is influencing the natural equine handling at top level. Also in the baroque dressage he is discussed along with names like Bent Branderup, Richard Hinrichs, Philippe Karl, Anja Beran, Sherry Ackermann and Nuno Oliveira.
A number of main articles on his horse work have recently been published in Horses For Life.
Very important for Hempfling is in general to interact in all field as long as the activities accord to the horses nature. He is therefore also training and coaching horse-people from fields like show jumping, gymkhana, baroque and artistic dressage, driving, racing, working equitation, doma vaquera and garotcha. He has investigated most classical riding theories like Baucher, Gueriniere, Pluvinel, Steinbrecht and Xenophon.
KFH also talks about issues like join-up, round pen, bullfight with horses (rejoneador de toro, toreros, represented by Pablo Hermoso Mendoza, Leonardo Hernandez and Bohorquez), and barefoot riding, natural hoof care, bareback riding, rein-less and bridle-less riding. His own riding system Balanced Weight Riding starts with thorough groundwork and lunging at liberty, building up the potential for the exercises of the High School Dressage (Haute Ecole), like shoulder-in, Spanish walk, passage, piaffe, half-pass, flying change, which all origin in the horses natural movements and may be performed at completely loose reins, in contrast to English dressage (represented by names like Helgstrand and Grunsven), and the conventional classical dressage (represented at Cadre Noir, the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre and the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art).
Genetic changing in breeding, horse characters and horse types are also topics in KFHs repertoire, which he employs with all horses (What Horses Reveal). You will often find him with horses of baroque breeds like Lusitano (Alter Real), Pura Raza Española horses (PRE), Lipizzan, Knapstrup, and Friesian but he is also very attached to the natural horse types like Arabian, Criollo, Welsh, Welsh Cob, Haflinger, Icelandic and Connemara. His approach is valid for all horses and everyone may feel at home in these authentic basics of Equus. In his courses therefore also riders and breeders from totally different styles are learning how to gain the friendship of their horses, often associated with breeds like Quarter, Thoroughbred, Pinto, Appaloosa, Mustang, Irish Cob, Paso Fino, Saddlebred and other horse types.
One may say that he is meanwhile one of the leading names in the issue animal and especially horse welfare, as well as wildlife, roots in nature and animal communication.
Hempflings professional background is in the fields communication, art, theater, music, study of native people and cultures. He lives on a small island in the Danish Archipelago where he conducts exclusive courses for people from all corners of the world.

It's so nice to see these videos and so sad at the same time, to see and think about how common and socially acceptable it is for people to hurt their horses the way they do, seeing the marks on their faces from being pulled around all the time, and the pain in their eyes when their owners are using their bits, it's like they are screaming to mostly deaf ears, it's heartbreaking.

Amazing vid. Horses are physically bigger, stronger and faster than people, but psychically they are not that strong, psychically they are hunted prey and pretty easy to abuse. They are not dangerous, they are just misunderstood. We are dangerous. We are hunters and horses are hunted. They are sensitive. Innocent is the accurate word, I absolutely love this video, thank you for making it. And thank you for everything you do.

I'm always amazed at how horses can read body language. I wanted to hand feed some Senior Feed to my old mare the other day who was not doing well and not eating. She was in a pasture with 13 other mares,...all of them wanting a taste of the food. With my body I told them that they needed to keep their distance from us so she could eat in peace. I made my body look threatening and they "read" me perfectly and stood waiting -- outside my "circle of influence." Around horses always learning.

+Ganpignanus A helmet and body protector will not protect you from death. You can still break your neck, spine, legs, arms, etc. If more people had a better understanding of their horses and a better relationship with them less 'accidents' would happen. 'Accidents' with horses most often happen because people don't like or want to work with the horse as a partner or friend because it can take time and proper knowledge, they prefer to treat the horse as a slave and force it to bend to their will because it is easier and faster. As a result the horse doesn't trust them and when the horse becomes scared it ignores the human and does what its instincts tell it to do.

OK.But the sad reality is that anyway the horse is the slave of riders, the only difference is to be a "good" owner or a piece of shit. I´´m sorry fot that, I know that most of "good" owners really think that they love horses ...but they are slaveholders.

You are wonderful! I have always felt the way you do about horses. (I just had a full on go at a "horse trainer" who stated that whips and spurs have a place in working with horses. ...I disagree (if people just looked at the reaction of a horse to a fly landing on its skin, the shudders that run through it, they would never, ever use whios and spurs. As you said, "horses are always innocent".

Yes, and it is a beautiful thing. I adopted a stallion that was about to be put to sleep due to "extreme aggression." The poor boy had a reason. When I arrived at the property he was stuck in the same stall he'd been stuck in for five months straight. The owner was afraid to open the stall door because he pinned his ears, so she'd hired a "trainer." The trainer simply cornered him in the stall with a whip and made him afraid to come in contact with people. I can only imagine the trainer had hit him, as he still has scars on his face around his eyes and nose. He's still slightly head shy. After sedating him and taking him home, I discovered that he was just terrified of people and that was his reason for lashing out. We rode and did well, but he still was missing something. He wasn't content. It took two years for him to even socialize with his pasture mates. I thought that he had something extremely wrong with him and had called the vet out several times because I thought he was depressed. One day I walked outside and I saw the four of them chasing each other and playing. I stood by the fence for a while, and he noticed me standing there. He cantered over to me like it was just the greatest thing in the world that I was there and just stood there rubbing his head on me and grooming me. I got on him that day and rode, we did good, and I remember I slipped the bridle off and got back on. Not the smartest decision looking back on it, but it worked out and we did fine riding tackless. It was a wonderful experience to see him change so suddenly. I had never expected for him to click like that. Five years later, he's still a happy and goofy seventeen year old stallion that can be ridden with mares and loves kids. It just shows that no matter how broken and beat up a horse is, they can always be fixed somehow even though it may take time.

These horses can sense the controlling nature of their handlers, they are wearing spurs and are using the stallions to make themselves look cool. A stallion is a leader, a higher being, they need a higher being as a friend, someone who steps into place with them.

just came to watch this vid again... come to think of it, it's not that bad, at least they're still expressing themselves. I just came from checking the saddle fit at a new yard I hadn't seen before. The customer took some time to show me around and we watched the horses working at the school for a while. I came out deeply saddened by how dead their eyes where, how empty and devoid of expression, submisive and puppet like moves, stallions and mares alike... the horse was gone and left it's shell

Amber Vandereay yes, but riding is such a gift to people and it connects a horse with a rider and if they serve no purpose they just end up like some of these horses because they have no idea how to respond to anything like riding. And I agree with the stalling thing that it gives horses more freedom to be in a pasture, I never said anything, about a stall.

The eyes of the horses were not lying. They were in deep pain and distress, if you look at the head shot of the horse being riden under the vertical, you can see that if he could cry he would, his mouth was yanked by the bit at every stride and his neck forced down. Theses horses were not difficult, they just decided that it was enough. They were totally right. If respect were shown to them they would never have become that way in the first place.

@TheSqueenie Good point, difficult to answer in one go, let's be brief. You must feel and be the leader and the horse MUST follow. You need to read a lot, listen to many pros, be around and handle horses a lot. Mix it all up, do as you feel and be open for changes. There are tantrums and TANTRUMS, you must correct any dangerous behaviour. The round pen is good for exercise and handling in general. Anything incorrect just make him move, he will learn all right. He will think before acting.

Bring Me To Life - Evanescence.

I liked the first version also. My horses throw temper tantrums sometimes when we are walking on the line, I tend to ignore it, even though most people tell me I need to correct it, which would involve some kind of pulling on the lead line or smacking the horse. I don't want to do this but also worry about them not growing out it (since they are only 2 and a half years old). I was wondering how Klaus would approach horses like these?

dolphineye, you see what you want to see. don't get so wrapped up in your 'hatred of prejudice' that that is all you can see. If you took time to become more familiar with Klaus's work you'd see your assessment is not the case. Even in the video above, was the man climbing the bars. Did you miss that? Not attacking you but trying to get you to see. Take care. Oh and be sure to check out the 'Stallions' youtube! Its WONDERFUL to see especially the stallion at the end!

mmh.. I think that most of the problems arise from wrong upbringing/training, as long as they are not physical... and that many psychological problems can be solved, just by taking care of the horses soul and human "training" to be in a relationship with their horses.

i think some of theese people handle the horses unfair... maybe they are aggresive but if they are, why put a saddle on them and try to push them hard to Work? I tried it and if u dont got the time to do the ground Work to get the horse comfortable with u then sell ur horse or give it a way! Poor horses

The song is Bring Me To Life by Evanescence. This video is amazing I am always telling people who complain about a horse that it's something someone has done or hasn't done that effects them.

@TheSqueenie I don't know if this is correct but if my horse (Not really my horse but i like to think he is) had a temper tantrum, I would back him up and if he did it really bad i would back up and shank. Not so hard that he can't breathe or anything, just enough to let him know that what he did is not accepable. (i think that is how i spell acceptable)

There are no bad horses only bad people. I work with rescued and often abused horses. The first thing you need to do is do be kind to them. Get them to trust you. The first horse looked like he had his tail docked (cut off) no wonder he was angry and surrounded by those military type macho men. Then all the people riding with NO HELMET or body protector on. Please be kind to your horses. If you do not know how to train them find someone who will do so with love and kindness.

I wouldn't want someone to sit on my back and treat me like their pet. No animal would. Duh. I'd have to take a long time to be breaken in too.

I've worked with horses my entire life and the first thing I notice is these women riding horses who so clearly have behavioral issues from being mistreated/left untaught and i'm wondering 'Why the hell are they NOT wearing protective gear?" That is: Helmets, chestguards etc. These types of horses are dangerous, and these people who think they won't get hurt are stupid D: Sure, you can fix them, but you still need to be concerned with yourself first. Plus other issues with human interaction

This is a video about EDUCATION, SOCIAL INTERACTION - not about "being good" to horses. If you want to be "good" to horses - well you better leave the world and have them roame the steppe like they did twentythousand years before. That would be the best thing man could do to all the animals on the planet! only an idiot could assume the big stallion is frustrated because of the "machos" that surround him. Ignorance! This big fellow really "dances" around, expressed himself, etc and than calmed down.in the end. Sometimes a cure may be very simple

The thing about horses is that people think they need to be broken, but they don't. They simply need to see you as the herd leader, a friend, and a companion, and they will respect you and do anything in the world for you. There should never be violence involved in getting a horse to do something- only a question. Force will ruin a horse, but friendship will make one the best creature you will ever know.
