You left off one of the most important scenes in this. When Carrie was catatonic, Will carried her off and took her into the shower. When he bathed her, a weird dark liquid came off of her, and she came out of her catatonia. This film is based on "The Visible Filth" novella, and the idea of being "dirty" on the outside is an important theme.

Dumb teenagers in packs thinking they are untouchable. Fairytale and folklore are jokes to scare kids and reinforced as fake. No parents continuously telling their kids if they behave like little shits, Baba Yaga will come to steal them away. Kids think it'll be fun if something happens, until they summon Satan and he eats everyone's souls. A mix of wanting something fantastic to happen but also not believing anything will. Dumb things like that. At the very least they could use, I dunno, good/light magic. Instead of summoning primordial gods people would do human sacrifices for. Or demons, why is it never angels?

I feel as if the breakup scene between Will and Carrie meant something more than just him burning another bridge. At the end of the scene, he stands behind the wall and it sounds as if she’s crying but we can’t see her face. This little addition to that scene makes me think Will hallucinated Carrie’s responses to his breakup proposal, and it wasn’t so much she mocked him but he was forced into thinking this was how he should proceed.

I think you missed the obvious similarity of the very first scene in the movie, in which we see a drunk Eric trying to fight Jeffrey, and the one where Will fights with his boss (Rosie), then also, in a drunken state, tries to fight a guy who accidentally hit him. The scene was the very same and I think it's symbolic of how Will had basically become the person Eric was, apparently more disgusting than Will, but not so much after a second look, when we learn that Will, despite being more pleasing on the outside, was just as disgusting on the inside. Also, I think it was interesting how the kids asking for a drink in the first scene were looking naive and unexperienced, basically harmless, on the outside, but were actually pretty "obscure" and evil on the inside, and that becomes evident when we see what they had actually put themselves into. This movie is definitely about how outside appearance can mislead us into thinking that people are what, in reality, they're not.

I wonder if the entity needed someone who was truly empty to inhabit? It looked like it took control of Garrett and his body reacted to it (the pulsing head and the spitting of teeth/blood). The entity inside of Garrett meets our main character and uses Garrett to incite the bar fight (which causes the possession of Eric). It then uses it's influence to make sure that the MC blows up the rest of his life (ending the relationships/whatever/flings/friendships) and sends him packing to Eric.

I think the quote at the begining of the film of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness gives the whole movie a totally new interpretation. "... it had whispered to him things about himself which he did not know, things of which he had no conception... and the whisper had proved irresistibily fascinating. It echoed loudly within him because he was hollow at the core..." - Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness Just as the novel conveys, there is a certain "darkness" hidden inside each one of us, which in jungian psychology it's called our shadow or those negative aspects of our unconscious that we refuse to accept and haunts us. Also the idea that even people who seem "normal" on the exterior, can do atrocious at bad circumstances or be "full of worms". The demonic entity that the kids in the movie released with the "translation of wounds ritual" pushes Will to his limit as he desperately to escape from his own truth through alcoholism, unrequited love, cheating and self deceiving. That truth being that he has no true purpose in life, no intrinsic motivation to keep him going and also the fact that he cheated on his girlfriend justifying his actions by saying that "she doesn't love him anymore", rather than taking full responsability. The roaches, as they became increasingly in numbers throughout the movie, are hallucinations that represent the darkness within Will and they follow him no matter where he goes. The visions (precisely the ones of severed heads) are suppressed impulses that he has product of his anger. As spectators, that scenes make us empathize with the protagonist, because at some point in our lifes most of us have had some obscure thoughts that we want to deny. Those thoughts not necessarily make us murderers, but are socially regarded as unacceptable. In a nutshell, the demonic entity on the movie, which is related to spiritual enlightenment, whispered to Will (literally through the phone) the darkness hidden within his unconscious self, things that he refused to accept. As he loses everything he had, and had no aspirations of his own, he came to the realization that the only thing left to do is accept the darkness inside (roaches filling up the Eric's bedroom and the screen) and transcending into something more than "just a body" or a "mock". This is just my personal interpretation based on Heart of Darkness and what i researched on psychology. I'm sorry if there are some grammar errors, english isn't my first language.

ponysalvaje1 “Will” is his name but is also in the phrase “free will” which means that humans can choose between good and evil - there is no pre-determination. So in a discussion about being presented with an evil God as a way to fill himself up, he has a choice and the name “Will” might have some meaning in the scope of the story.

Maybe it's just because I've been a fuckup for much of my life as well, but I had a much more sympathetic, tragic reading of Armie Hammer's character here than you. To me the guy came across as someone using alcohol and general resignation as an escape from feelings of inadequacy, fear of failure and depression more than anything. Add those supernatural shenanigans amplifying all of those negative traits to that and presto - vaguely douchey guy becomes a monster.
