Have this one, bought I from R&L, I live about a 45 minute drive from them. Just after 90 days it died and R&L says it is past their warranty and now I emailing back and forth with the manufacturer finding out how to get warranty on this. I loved it when it worked, but I finally just said heck with it and now just received a Yaesue 70 model from Giga parts because R&L didn't have them in stock and the guy I talked to about warranty kinda had an attitude so I spent my money somewhere else and Giga parts was really fast. Probably going to go with the from now on although I would rather spend my money in Ohio. It's all about how you treat your customers!!

9W on an advertised 10W radio is a definite win for a radio at this price. My Yaesu FT3D puts out high 3’s to low-mid 4’s at best. Usually in the high 3’s. I’ve only seen over 4 if I’m using the car charger which is putting 12V into the radio.

Three years late to the discussion. But even today, if I were to get only one HT, that's the one I would get. Wish it had a better screen, but then again, it is a radio, not a TV. The battery can now be upgraded to a USB-C chargeable one, if that's what you care about. Overall, an awesome radio!

To open the uv9 press and hold no. 2 then turn on the radio. Many more frequencies. Have fun.

Jim at FEPLabs just did this radio in his ongoing series on spurious emissions. I did not realize it was true dual band, that moves it up higher on the "I need that" list. While I have whined about unboxing vids in the past, I know your unboxings go far beyond the usual YT unboxing. The fact you measure power is a big plus to your reviews!

I feel that in an everyday carry HT, every watt counts. Typical EDC HTs need to hit repeaters WITH INTELLIAGLE AUDIO and monitor many bands while not be too expensive should it break/lost. This seems to hit those marks.

Not sure how other "plus" versions, but KG-UV9D Plus has a cross band repeater built in, when standard KG-UV9D does not. I tested it and it really works well.

Nice review. All of your videos, that I've seen, are top shelf. Thanks. My question is for all us old folks. You mentioned the nice display. That's good. Now, how about the sound volume and clarity? At my age, that's important to me. If I can't hear or understand the audio, it isn't a good fit. I'm studying for my tech license and trying to figure out which radio to start with. (Suffering from information overload.) I'm only 71 years old, so, it's time to get started. Or, recommend the makes and models with better speakers.

As a commercial 2 way radio repair tech, I like when the battery connects to the battery for 2 reasons. 1. You can clip 2nd battery to your belt. 2. If the part that holds the belt clip, you replace the battery. Its less of an issue that way. DE KE0ABR

That is a good way to look at it. My thought was to have 1 battery on the charger while the other was on the radio, and when you swap, you would always have a charged battery. Usually new batteries don't come with belt clips, they are purchased separately

Menu, naming indicate a made by Baofeng or whatever the same factory is. Baofeng sold a uv5x mate here in the UK, via Amazon, for £10 each ! So I bought 4 😉 The price then shot up of course. You do get what you pay for, and I do have a Wouxun 8d, and the extended battery will go flat just listening to FM commercial radio in under 10hours. Confirmed with a second battery. All that will do is just drain the battery faster. 5W, even 4W, is more than plenty power for an HT. 8W, 9W, 10W, etc, are just marketing gimmicks.

@@mjm9863 would having the ability to select power be of good use? My thinking is that 9W can be used for those times where signal is low due to obstacles. And if at good line of sight, switch to low power. One can keep the radio at 5W as default.

Ok so I got the kg-uv9t plus version of this. So far I have no clue as to the T designation. Same orange radio though. Programing it manually was not as bad as a beofeng. Mine did not come with a usb charger but came with a wall plug and a standard cigarette lighter plug for the car.

Kg uv9d plus has a 2000 mah battery and it's only 5 or 5.5 Watts max but I think it's still 999 channels and it's also the only other orange HT I think

Bought it from Amazon, the power supply plug terminal looks like the Japanese type. I had another 12 v 1 a power supply that I used and it works fine

Jason, Many Thanks for your channel. Just got my license so I can fly my fpv legal. Decided I might as well get a radio and see how much fun I can have with it. In trying to decide what is important to me and I think that with my 63 year old eyes and having some experience in trying to read small screens (I'm a pilot), being able to read the screen is actually number 1. Since I have no idea whether I will spend time doing the HAM thing or not (I have several hobbies) it doesn't seem terribly smart to spend a lot of money on the radio, but buying something that is of questionable quality might make it hard to know what is really possible. $100 to $150 feels about right. I'm intrigued by this radio and although I watched like 50 videos on "first radio", I'm still not sure which couple I should choose from. Any advice would be appreciated. I live in Plano, so across the metro from you. Maybe we'll get to talk some day,,,,, when I have a radio. All the best, Wes

Buy a Yaesu. I get one VX7 and two VX8, no problem, one VX8 falled on concrete from 3 feet and not a scratch. On the other hand, I bought a Baofeng, bad sound, unable to reach 300 yards through a wall.. I gave it to a friend. Its only a toy. But I wouldnt sell the VX7 or one VX8 despite three TX is too much, I love them.

I've have the TYT UV8000E Dual Band, Dual Watch, 10 watt, HT since December of 2018. And its a good solid radio. Now, does it put out ten watts, yes, on one frequency. In my case its 146.000, because that is the frequency I get the SWR of 1.0, with my Abbree 18.8 inch antenna. So find out where your antenna is tuned, and on that frequency, it will put out 10 watts. But only on that frequency.

Sure you can do this, no one really cares. Just don't get caught with a non-certified radio by the FCC inspectors.

You could use it for satellites, sure. But it isn't full duplex.

I have this radio and after I loaded all my repeaters it has never worked. I also get an error that the frequencies are out of range. Is it possible to get a blank copy of the *.kg file that I could use to upload to the radio to see if that fixes it?

@@HamRadio2 randl.com. I figured it out. The error happened after I reset the whole radio. After doing that I could not load the repeaters in my area. I can’t remember the actual error message but it had to do with the frequencies are out of range. The fix: after you reset the radio turn it off. Press and hold 2 and turn the radio on. This must set the region, I can only guess. By the way, thank you for helping me pass the technician 3/4/2021. It is greatly appreciated. KL5FH

What constitutes that category, in your mind? Honest question. In reality, any radio could fit that description, but generally speaking, I would recommend one with a good battery life and that can be charge via some USB source. This way the radio can be charged from a battery brick, same as your phone/tablet, etc.

Honestly, for 3 dB more.. Yaesu sells now a model for 70$. Will be rugged, waterproof, no computer needed.

@@HamRadio2 The FT 65, thats it. As I wrote below, I have one VX7 and two VX8 but no another handheld Yaesu. Dont you agree that Yaesu is more advisable than a Baofeng ? The Baofeng I had didnt even have a mic but used the loudspeaker, with a awful sound.

@@MBJanus Generally speaking I would recommend Yaesu over a Baofeng, yes. I just don't know why you are asking about a Baofeng in this video, which is for a Wouxun KG-UV9D MATE. It is NOT a Baofeng. Also the FT-65 that I have and reviewed says it is also Made in China, so realistically, I don't know that the FT65 model would be any better than a Wouxun. Maybe it would, maybe not. Testing each radio might be a fun video to make.

@@HamRadio2 Sorry, I dont really what a Wouxun is, thats why Im confused. For the Yaesu, I guess, or I hope, that yaesu wants to control the models made in China, as this brand has for now a good reputation (behind Motorola, Icom, Kenwood, .. but still well known). Sorry for my mistake about Wouxun. Thats only because I think that a less cheap transceiver is worth the price for licensed users (NB sorry too for my poor english, Im french).

@@MBJanus No problem about your English, I understand what you are saying, and thanks for stopping by the channel. Wouxun has actually been around longer than Baofeng - at least in the USA it has. Baofeng radios are more popular due to the lower price point, but the quality is lower also. Yes people do know Yaesu pretty well, but some of their cheaper models, like the FT65, may or may not be as good as their older models. Their FT3D HT is a great radio, but in the USA it sells for over $300. As I said, I think testing the Wouxun and FT65 would be fun, so I might try that soon.

Can you verify something? According to Wouxun's website every KG-UV9 model radio does RX and TX from 400-512 however, two way radios and amazon say it goes 420-450. Which is it? I know above 450 is commercial license space. I'm not asking a legal question - I just would like to know which documentation is correct.

I would imagine they are both correct. Wouxun makes them to be full-range, but due to restrictions in place for imports, they might ship them to USA dealers when they are locked to 420-450. The unit I have goes to 520. I can key it up on GMRS freqs, but I have not tested it any further.

Would you be able to test the stock rubber duckies antenna on this? I did some tests on my KG-UV9P and unless I'm doing something wrong, they weren't good. I was thinking that this MATE was the same as the UV9P, but power wise, I got a little less. From the lowest of 3.4w on 512MHz to the highest of 8.5w on 174.00. The antenna was anywhere from 1.9 to as bad as 9.5. I used that SW-33, so maybe it's not very accurate? It did seem to jump around a lot

i dont think people care about the difference of 9 to 10 watts in distance, they care more about the principle, the deceit of the manufacturer or seller claiming the 10 watts...

Probably true, but this fact remains for most radios. My ID-5100 is supposed to do 50-watts per band, but it doesn't.

@@HamRadio2 this is why I love my commercial radios. If it doesn't do rated power, go into software and tweak it til it does. I have a junk 50 watt radio that I cranked up to 80 watts reliably. Did that 2 years ago and with near daily use, its still going strong. It's a kenwood tk-7180h. I was hoping it would blow out the final, because there is one rated for 75 watts I wanted to put in and see if it would do 100.

I just got this radio. Don't know if you are still in the market for it, but I can verify that it CAN be unlocked to transmit on the FRS/GMRS/MURS frequencies. It only takes software that I found quickly on a UK based Ham radio site that you have to register to download the file for. Says it's for the UV9D Plus, but it worked like charm. The unlock software worked fine on my Windows 11 PC. Keep in mind that it IS illegal to transmit outside of band with it. You probably know that. However, in a serious emergency, being able to transmit on FRS/GMRS/MURS, could be very valuable. Works great with CHIRP too.

I am mainly positive on this radio for cost and build quality. However, I am currently wrestling with the SCAN function. 1. When scanning, it will stop on the active channel but does not continue scanning after the activity on that channel stops. I have to manually press SCAN again to re-start the scanning of the radio. 2. Band B will only SCAN the first three SCAN groups that I have set-up. If I want to SCAN group "4" and above, I have to switch to Band A. Not necessarily a deal breaker but I do like to keep my repeaters scans on the A Band and the others (RR, Airport etc) on the B band. I have tried moving the groups around but it seems like there is a limit to scan groups on the B band. Am I missing something about the continuous scan function or is that just the way it is designed?

180-230mhz you will find analog TV signals in South Africa. 😂😂 390-400mhz will be used by police services soon. 446 UK PMR is also used a lot here with cheap massmart radios.

No, they make higher powered HTs than 10-watts but most of them aren't certified for the Marine band

@@HamRadio2 wanted to thank you for all of your videos. I know they take a lot of time and effort to make. For beginners like me, it helps to have someone as knowledgeable as you to guide the way. Without some help here and there, it would probably be to frustrating and easy to get overwhelmed. Thanks again for providing interesting content and helping the beginners stay interested..... I just purchased the anniversary edition of this radio, came with everything needed, including two batteries, a Tram 1411 and 100ft of RG8x. Looking into the wouxun grms 1000g you reviewed, but the hand held version KG905G.... and as soon a I get more coin.. a digital police scanner the udiden sds100... unless you have a recommendation.. it has to be phase 2 for my area...... looks like I've caught the radio bug !

I really expected the latest Chinese marketing trick of 10w is really 5w per band totaling 10w. Wasn't there a Baofeng that advertised 18 watts and it was like 5+5+5+1+1+1=18 watts. Something like that. Good to see that it's close. Plus it's orange.

Yes, indeed. I also once saw one listed as a "dual band" and they meant it was monoband, but available in 2 different bands.

You should have tried 146.000, because that is dead center int he middle of the 2 meter band. Which most antenna's are tuned for.

Would this have the same RX/TX specs as the UV-9D and 9P? I just bought the 9P a few days ago and that TDR?/VM button does nothing on a long press. It seems my radio is stuck in frequency mode. Also, when I try to enter the same frequencies that you did, the 850.0-240.0 and 109, it doesn't accept them. Just jumps back to the previous frequency that was already there. Does it sound like this unit is defective? Will you be doing a similar review on the 9P (if you get one)? Preferably programing it with Chirp! That would be a great help! Thanks for all you doing, its extremely helpful to those of us new to the hobby

For anyone else that may encounter this problem,, was able to get the fix for this. Turn radio off, depress the #2 key and continue to depress the key as you power on the radio

Manufacturers claims regarding power output has to be taken with a pinch mostly. PS... I have lots of different BaoFeng radios and none of them are flimsy....

Please help me, I bought the Wouxun KG-UV9D Mate 10watt Dual Band Ham Radio. I am currently studying for my beginner Ham license. My question, from straight out of the box and the radio being charged, “How do I listen to anything ?” I have yet to pick up not one single channel! I know I can’t talk or transmit while I am unlicensed, but could you at least steer me in the direction to where I can at least listen to others on my new ham radio. I promise not to hit the talk button until I am fully licensed, but I would like to at least listen to my new radio. Pardon my ignorance. The learning curve has been difficult at best, with no one to help guide me. Please send a couple of tips my way, if you don’t mind and have the time. I just want to listen to my new radio at the moment. Thanks so much. 👍😊

I like the large display but it is a bit pricey for just the additive of Air Band receive only. Lets face it, there is really no difference in performance between 5w and 10w. A better Antenna would help at that. I have the Baofeng GT-3TP at 8w and it cost only $34.00 with extra accessories.

Cheaper price shouldn't be a factor when considering a reliable, dependable radio as an EDC or Emcomm radio. The front end and receiver on the Wouxun is far better than a Baofeng radio. Just like a D72 would be better than this model

I just got one of these delivered today from R&L electronics. Does anyone know of a video on how to program it? I have been messing with it ALL day and I can't get it to program. I bought the programming cable that they recommend and got the drivers on my laptop. It read the info from the radio but when I went to write it back to the radio it said error. And then I tried to do it manually and somehow got 2 channels saved incorrectly and now it will only scan those channels. And it won't let me delete them. I even did a full reset to default and they were still there. Can anyone help?

I just got the UV9D Mate the other day. You said "these". Did you get more than one? I ask because having 2 could narrow down if your issue is a defective radio or a programming problem. When I got mine. I wasn't home. Made a stop at R&L. I was playing around with it and then factory reset it. Totally messed it up. Couldn't go into channel mode, and couldn't transmit on like half the HAM frequencies. If that is your problem. Turn off the radio, hold down the number 2 button, and while pressing it, turn the radio back on.
